FIFTEEN DAYS TOO LATE / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - Vincent's Empire Begins to Crack

Vincent pressed his palm against the door and shouted, “Anthony, let him go!”

A photograph of Elena Carter lay at his feet.

One corner had been folded backward.

A time was written there.

MIDNIGHT. ST. CATHERINE’S.

Then Nico groaned on the other side of the door.

“Don't open it.”

Vincent froze.

A second later, Anthony laughed.

“You heard my son.”

Madison tightened her arms around Leo.

Daniel raised his gun.

Sofia moved away from the door and whispered, “He's forcing Nico to bring you out.”

Vincent looked at the clock.

11:36 p.m.

Twenty-four minutes.

“Anthony,” Vincent said, “you wanted me. I'm here.”

“No, nephew. You're hiding behind a door.”

“You're the one holding a gun on an unarmed man.”

Nico laughed weakly.

“Technically, I’m rarely unarmed.”

A sharp impact sounded.

Nico grunted.

Vincent's jaw tightened.

“Touch him again.”

“And?”

“I'll forget you raised me.”

Silence.

Anthony's voice changed.

“You already have.”

Vincent stared at the door.

“No.”

He spoke quietly.

“I finally remembered what raising someone is supposed to mean.”

Madison looked at him.

Anthony didn't answer.

Vincent continued.

“You taught me how to threaten people. How to recognize a tail. How to punish betrayal. You taught me that every relationship was leverage.”

His eyes moved toward Leo.

“But you never taught me how to stay.”

Madison's throat tightened.

“And now you're blaming me for the husband you became?”

Anthony asked.

Vincent's expression hardened.

“No.”

That answer surprised everyone.

“That's mine.”

Madison stared at him.

Vincent kept his eyes on the door.

“You built the test. I chose the answers.”

Anthony was silent.

“I left my wife in labor.”

Vincent's voice remained steady.

“Nobody forced me through that door.”

Madison looked down at Leo.

“I stayed away fifteen days. Nobody forced that either.”

“Vincent,” Anthony said.

“I made those choices.”

He stepped closer to the door.

“And I’ll spend however long it takes living with them.”

A pause.

“But what happens next?”

Vincent's eyes became cold.

“That's yours.”

Gunfire exploded in the hallway.

Madison screamed.

Vincent threw himself away from the door.

Daniel grabbed Sofia.

Leo started crying.

Three shots.

Then silence.

“Nico!”

No answer.

Vincent reached for the handle.

Madison grabbed his jacket.

“Wait.”

He looked at her.

She shook her head.

“Don't give Anthony exactly what he wants.”

Vincent breathed hard.

Every instinct demanded that he open the door.

Charge into the hallway.

Kill whoever stood there.

That was what Anthony had trained him to do.

React.

Punish.

Never hesitate.

Vincent slowly removed his hand.

Daniel nodded toward the kitchen.

“Service exit?”

“Utility corridor behind the pantry.”

Sofia looked surprised.

“This apartment has one?”

“Every building I own has one.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Paranoid bastard.”

“Alive paranoid bastard.”

They moved.

Vincent opened a hidden panel behind the pantry shelving.

A narrow maintenance corridor appeared.

“Madison first.”

She looked at him.

“You're coming.”

“Yes.”

“No heroic nonsense.”

Vincent almost argued.

Then stopped.

“Okay.”

Madison entered carrying Leo.

Sofia followed.

Daniel went next.

Vincent stepped inside last and closed the panel.

Darkness.

Only emergency lights illuminated the corridor.

They moved toward a service stairwell.

Madison's breathing became uneven.

Vincent noticed.

“You okay?”

“My incision hurts.”

He stopped immediately.

“We rest.”

“No.”

“Madison—”

“We move.”

He looked at her face.

Pale.

Sweat near her hairline.

Without asking, Vincent reached for Leo.

Madison hesitated only briefly before handing him over.

Vincent tucked the baby against his chest.

“Better?”

“No.”

“Honest.”

“Get used to it.”

Something almost warm passed between them.

Then Daniel opened the stairwell door.

“Clear.”

They descended.

Thirty-two floors was impossible for Madison.

At twenty-nine, she leaned against the wall.

Vincent looked at Daniel.

“Elevator.”

“Could be controlled.”

“She can't walk thirty floors.”

“I can.”

Madison pushed away from the wall.

Vincent stared at her.

“No.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Careful.”

“Fine. You can.”

He adjusted Leo.

“But you shouldn't.”

Madison hated that he was right.

Daniel checked the service elevator.

“No electronic activity. Mechanical override still works.”

They entered.

Sofia pressed the basement level.

The doors closed.

Vincent looked down at Leo.

His son had wrapped one tiny fist around Vincent's shirt.

Madison noticed.

“He likes you.”

Vincent stared at the hand.

“He has poor judgment.”

“He gets that from me.”

Vincent looked at her.

Madison realized what she'd said.

For one second, neither spoke.

Then the elevator stopped.

Not at the basement.

Floor twelve.

Daniel raised his gun.

Vincent shifted Leo toward Madison.

The doors opened.

Empty corridor.

Then a wounded man stumbled inside.

One of Vincent's guards.

“Boss.”

Vincent caught him.

“What happened?”

“Anthony's people.”

“How many?”

“Too many.”

“Where?”

“Everywhere.”

The guard was bleeding from his side.

“He's taking the organization.”

Vincent stared at him.

“What?”

“Capos are switching.”

Sofia closed her eyes.

Daniel cursed.

The guard continued.

“Anthony told them you abandoned operations for your wife.”

Madison stiffened.

“He told them the Carter organization can't survive with a weak leader.”

Vincent's face remained expressionless.

“How many switched?”

“Maybe half.”

“And the others?”

“Waiting.”

“For what?”

“To see who wins.”

Vincent laughed quietly.

Madison had never heard anything colder.

“So that's the game.”

The guard nodded.

“He froze accounts. Took the South Side warehouses. Bellini crews are backing him.”

Sofia shook her head.

“My family won't.”

“They already did.”

Her face fell.

Vincent looked at the elevator numbers.

His empire was collapsing.

Years of power.

Businesses.

Territory.

Men who had sworn loyalty.

Everything Anthony had trained him to protect.

Madison watched him carefully.

This was the moment.

She knew it.

Anthony had created another choice.

Again.

Empire.

Family.

The elevator reached the basement.

Doors opened.

Vincent didn't move.

Daniel looked at him.

“What are you going to do?”

Vincent glanced at Madison.

Then Leo.

“Nothing.”

Daniel frowned.

“Nothing?”

“Anthony wants the empire?”

Vincent stepped out.

“He can choke on it.”

Sofia stared.

“You can't be serious.”

“I am.”

“Vincent, if Anthony controls the organization, he controls hundreds of armed men.”

“Then we remove Anthony.”

“How?”

“Without fighting for his chair.”

Daniel studied him.

“You're walking away.”

Vincent looked at Madison.

“If there's anything left to walk away from.”

She said nothing.

But something in her eyes changed.

Vincent noticed.

He didn't push.

They reached a secure vehicle in the basement.

Daniel helped the wounded guard inside another car.

Sofia stopped Vincent.

“You don't understand what you're giving up.”

Vincent looked at her.

“Yes, I do.”

“You spent your whole life building this.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I spent my whole life maintaining what Anthony built around me.”

Sofia stared.

Vincent looked at Leo.

“I'd rather build something my son doesn't have to inherit.”

Madison heard every word.

She wanted to believe him.

That was dangerous.

Hope had hurt her more than anger ever had.

They drove to a small medical clinic controlled by one of Daniel's contacts.

No Carter guards.

No known associates.

Just a retired trauma surgeon named Dr. Samuel Reeves.

He examined Madison first.

“You've been doing too much.”

She gave Vincent a look.

Vincent almost smiled.

Reeves continued.

“Your incision is intact, but you need rest.”

“I'll rest when nobody's shooting at us.”

“Then perhaps choose quieter friends.”

Daniel laughed.

Vincent didn't.

Reeves checked Leo.

Healthy.

Perfect.

Vincent stood beside the examination table.

The doctor looked at him.

“Father?”

Vincent paused.

Madison answered.

“Yes.”

Vincent looked at her.

She pretended not to notice.

Reeves handed Leo back.

“Congratulations.”

Vincent took his son.

“Thank you.”

Two simple words.

Yet Madison saw his face.

He had missed hearing them.

Fifteen days ago, strangers should have congratulated him in a hospital hallway.

He should have been beside Madison.

Instead, he was hearing it now in a hidden clinic while his empire collapsed.

His phone was gone, so Daniel placed a burner on the table.

It rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Daniel answered.

“Hello?”

Nico.

“Daniel.”

Daniel immediately put it on speaker.

“Nico?”

“Yeah.”

Vincent stepped forward.

“Where are you?”

Nico laughed painfully.

“Nice to hear your voice too.”

“Are you hurt?”

“Couple scratches.”

“Anthony?”

“Gone.”

“Where?”

“Cemetery.”

Vincent looked at the clock.

11:53.

Seven minutes.

Nico continued.

“He wants you there.”

“He can wait.”

Silence.

Nico sounded genuinely surprised.

“What?”

“I'm not coming.”

“Vincent.”

“He has my mother?”

“Yes.”

That changed everything.

Madison saw it.

Vincent's jaw tightened.

“Is she alive?”

“Yes.”

“Are you sure?”

“I saw her.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

Nico continued.

“There's something you need to know.”

Vincent opened them.

“Are you Anthony's son?”

Long silence.

“Yes.”

Sofia looked away.

Daniel's expression remained hard.

Vincent nodded once.

“Did you know?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Eighteen years.”

Vincent laughed quietly.

“You met me eighteen years ago.”

“I know.”

“Was any of it real?”

Nico's voice broke slightly.

“Yes.”

Vincent looked down.

“That isn't enough tonight.”

“I know.”

“Did you help Anthony?”

“Not the way you think.”

“That's becoming a popular sentence.”

“I fed him information.”

Vincent's face hardened.

“For eighteen years?”

“At first.”

“How long?”

“Three.”

“And after?”

“I lied to him.”

“Why?”

“Because he was wrong about you.”

Vincent didn't respond.

Nico continued.

“He told me you'd eventually destroy everyone you loved.”

Vincent glanced at Madison.

“He wasn't completely wrong.”

“No.”

Nico's voice softened.

“But he was wrong about why.”

Vincent stared at the burner.

“Why did you lie about Rachel?”

“Because Rachel isn't a victim.”

“We know.”

“No, you don't.”

Nico breathed painfully.

“She works for Anthony.”

“Also figured that out.”

“Not just Anthony.”

Vincent frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Rachel is the one who designed the hospital operation.”

Madison went cold.

“She planned to take Leo?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She needed a Carter infant.”

Vincent stepped closer.

“For what?”

“Proof.”

“Of what?”

“That Anthony's bloodline had produced the legitimate heir.”

Daniel frowned.

“But Leo isn't Anthony's bloodline.”

“Exactly.”

Silence.

Nico continued.

“When the first test proved Leo was Vincent's biological son but didn't carry Anthony's marker, Anthony's entire story collapsed.”

Vincent stared.

“So Anthony isn't related to me.”

“No.”

“Then why did he think Leo would carry his marker?”

“Because Anthony believed something your mother knew was false.”

“What?”

Nico hesitated.

“That your father wasn't really your father.”

Vincent looked at the old letter.

“Why would Anthony believe that?”

“Because Elena wanted him to.”

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“To protect you.”

“From what?”

Nico inhaled.

“From Anthony learning the truth about himself.”

Vincent became still.

“What truth?”

Before Nico answered, gunfire erupted through the burner.

“Nico!”

A crash.

Someone shouted.

Then Elena's voice.

“Vincent!”

He grabbed the phone.

“Mom!”

“Don't come here!”

A struggle.

Anthony shouted something.

Then another gunshot.

The line went dead.

Vincent stood frozen.

Madison approached.

“You have to go.”

He looked at her.

“You just told me not to.”

“That was before we heard her.”

“It’s a trap.”

“I know.”

“If I leave you—”

“You're not abandoning me.”

Madison's voice was firm.

“You're going to bring your mother back.”

Vincent stared at her.

There was a difference.

For the first time, he understood it.

Leaving wasn't always abandonment.

The difference was whether you came back.

He handed Leo to Madison.

“I'll come back.”

She looked into his eyes.

“Don't promise.”

Vincent nodded.

“Then I'll do everything I can.”

Daniel picked up his gun.

“I'm going.”

Sofia stepped forward.

“So am I.”

Vincent shook his head.

“Sofia stays with Madison.”

“I know the cemetery.”

“So do I.”

“I know Anthony.”

Vincent stared at her.

Madison spoke.

“Go.”

Sofia looked at her.

Madison nodded.

“I'll be safe here.”

Vincent hesitated.

Then accepted it.

He kissed Leo's forehead.

His lips lingered for one second.

He looked at Madison.

Neither knew what they were allowed to do.

So Vincent simply touched her hand.

Then left.

St. Catherine’s Cemetery was twelve minutes away.

Daniel drove.

Sofia sat behind them.

At 12:08 a.m., they entered through the eastern gate.

No guards.

No vehicles.

Rows of headstones stretched into darkness.

Vincent walked toward his father's grave.

A lantern burned beside it.

Elena sat in a chair.

Alone.

Untied.

Vincent stopped.

“Mom?”

She raised her head.

Older.

Fragile.

Alive.

Her eyes filled.

“Vincent.”

He took one step.

Daniel grabbed him.

“Wait.”

Elena stood.

“It's okay.”

Vincent stared at his mother.

Twenty-two years vanished.

He was eleven again.

“Where's Anthony?”

Elena looked behind him.

Vincent turned.

Nobody.

Then Sofia screamed.

A gunshot exploded.

Daniel fell.

Vincent drew his weapon.

Elena shouted:

“NO!”

Sofia stood behind him.

But she wasn't holding the gun.

Nico was.

Blood covered his face.

The weapon shook in his hand.

Daniel lay on the ground.

Vincent aimed at Nico.

“Nicholas.”

Nico looked terrified.

“I didn't shoot him.”

Another voice came from behind the mausoleum.

Anthony.

“Of course you did.”

He stepped into view.

Rachel walked beside him.

Anthony smiled.

Then looked at Elena.

“Tell him.”

Elena's face went white.

Vincent kept his gun raised.

“Tell me what?”

Anthony laughed.

“The secret your mother destroyed our entire family to protect.”

Elena shook her head.

“Anthony, don't.”

“Why not?”

Anthony stepped closer.

“He deserves to know why his father died.”

Vincent's grip tightened.

“My father died because you killed him.”

Anthony smiled.

“No.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Vincent looked at her.

“Mom?”

She began crying.

“I'm sorry.”

“For what?”

Elena reached into her coat.

She removed an old birth certificate.

Vincent stared at it.

His name was written at the top.

VINCENT MICHAEL CARTER.

Then Elena unfolded the bottom.

A section had been concealed for thirty-three years.

Biological father.

Vincent took one step closer.

Elena held the document toward him.

Anthony smiled.

May you like

Vincent reached for it.

And when he saw the name written on the hidden line, the gun slowly slipped from his hand.
