Chapter 4 - The Gala of Retribution

The annual Metropolitan Business Gala was the biggest event of the year for New York’s high society. Despite the sudden collapse of Vance Group’s stock over the past forty-eight hours, Richard Vance and his daughter Victoria made a desperate appearance, hoping to rally investors and save their crumbling empire.
Victoria stood near the champagne fountain, wearing a lavish silver gown, though her pale skin and nervous ticks betrayed her desperation. Her father, Richard, stood beside her, sweating profusely into his tuxedo collar as high-profile investors repeatedly snubbed them.
"Where is Alejandro?" Richard hissed to his daughter. "If he doesn't publicly reinstate our partnership tonight, the creditors will seize our holdings by sunrise!"
"He'll come, Dad," Victoria lied, her voice shaking. "He was just emotional the other night. That stupid maid threw him off. He’ll realize he needs our political connections."
Suddenly, the grand double doors of the ballroom swung open.
The room fell dead silent.
Alejandro Sterling walked in. He looked regal, intimidating, radiating power in a custom midnight-blue tuxedo. But it wasn't Alejandro who drew every breath out of the room.
Walking beside him, her arm looped gracefully through his, was Elena.
She was breathtaking. She wore an emerald-green silk gown that draped flawlessly over her slender frame. Her dark hair was styled in elegant waves, revealing her radiant, unblemished face. And on her ring finger, sparkling under the crystal chandeliers, was the legendary Sterling Sapphire—the ring Vance had tried to make her forget.
Victoria dropped her glass of champagne. It shattered on the floor—a poetic echo of two nights ago. "No... no, that’s impossible!"
Richard Vance turned ghost-white, taking a subconscious step back. "How... how is she..."
Alejandro and Elena walked straight through the parting crowd, stopping right in front of the horrified father and daughter.
"Good evening, Richard. Victoria," Alejandro said, his voice quiet yet carrying across the silent hall. "You look surprised. Did you think my wife wouldn't attend the gala she used to host?"
"Alejandro, please," Richard stammered, raising his hands in surrender. "This is a misunderstanding! We didn't know who she was! We were just trying to help an unfortunate woman—"
"Save it for the federal prosecutors, Richard," Elijah’s voice cut in as he stepped up beside Alejandro, accompanied by six uniformed NYPD officers and federal agents.
"Richard Vance, Victoria Vance," the lead agent announced loudly, pulling out a set of handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, human trafficking, corporate sabotage, and obstruction of justice."
Gasps erupted across the ballroom. Cameras flashed instantly as reporters rushed forward, capturing every second of Victoria’s breakdown. She shrieked as cold steel clicked around her manicured wrists, her designer dress rumpling as agents escorted her out of the room.
Richard Vance looked at Elena, his eyes filled with desperate panic. "Elena, please! Tell them! We gave you a place to live! We fed you!"
Elena stepped forward, looking down at the man who had stolen three years of her life with calm, unflinching dignity.

"You gave me a rag and a bucket," Elena said, her voice resonant and clear. "You thought you could make me forget who I was. But love doesn't vanish just because you hide it in the dark."
As the police dragged the screaming duo out into the night, the room burst into applause—a standing ovation for the true queen of New York society who had returned from the shadows.
