Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Past

The silence in the foyer was deafening after security dragged Victoria Vance out the door, her hysterical screams fading into the freezing night air.
Alejandro sat on the cold floor, his arms wrapped gently around Elena. She was shaking uncontrollably, her body feeling frail and brittle against his chest, as if a strong gust of wind might shatter her into pieces.
"Elena... my god, Elena," he murmured, burying his face in her dusty hair, breathing in the faint, unmistakable scent of lavender that still lingered beneath the smell of harsh chemicals. "Where have you been? What happened to you?"
Elena couldn't speak. Tears cut pale tracks through the dust on her face. She reached out with a trembling hand, her cracked fingers barely touching his cheekbone as if verifying he was real. "I... I forgot," she whispered, her voice choking. "For so long, Alejandro... I didn't know who I was."
Half an hour later, Alejandro had gently carried her up the winding staircase to the master bedroom—a room that had remained locked and untouched for three years. He ran a hot bath, adding her favorite essential oils, and waited outside the door while she washed away the grime of her stolen years. When she emerged, wrapped in his plush cashmere robe, she looked so small, yet the spark of the woman he loved was beginning to flicker back behind her eyes.
Dr. Harrison, Alejandro’s private family physician, arrived within twenty minutes. After a thorough exam, he pulled Alejandro into the hallway.
"Physical exhaustion, severe malnutrition, and clear signs of prolonged psychological trauma," Dr. Harrison reported grimly. "The scar on her temple indicates severe head trauma, consistent with a plane crash. It’s a miracle she survived at all. Traumatic amnesia is complex, Alejandro. She likely lost her memory, was taken in by opportunistic people, and spent years living in survival mode."
"Who did this to her?" Alejandro’s hands clenched into white-knuckled fists. "How did she end up in a staffing agency assigned to my own house?"
"Memory recovery in trauma patients can be triggered by familiar environments or extreme stress," Harrison explained. "She may have subconsciously gravitated toward this area, or someone intentionally placed her here knowing her identity—or hoping she’d never be recognized."
Alejandro’s mind raced. He returned to the bedroom, where Elena was sitting on the edge of the king-sized bed, clutching a mug of warm chamomile tea.
He sat beside her and took her hands in his. "Tell me everything you remember, sweetheart. Take your time."
Elena looked down at her lap, her voice trembling. "When the plane went down... I remember fire. Cold water. Then... a village near the coast. A family took me in, but they... they didn't treat me well. They made me work. A man named Thomas told me I was his debtor, that I owed him for saving my life."
Alejandro’s jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.
"Months passed," Elena continued, tears swelling in her eyes. "My memory was a black wall. But I had dreams. I dreamed of a ring... a ring with a sapphire surrounded by diamonds. And I kept hearing the name 'Sterling.' A few weeks ago, Thomas brought me to the city. He took my documents, put me in a cheap boarding house, and forced me to work for a private domestic placement service. He took all my paychecks."
"What was the name of the agency?" Alejandro asked softly.
"Vance Domestic Staffing," she murmured.

Alejandro felt a surge of lethal clarity. Victoria Vance’s family didn't just stumble into his life by accident. The Vance family owned the agency that had held Elena in virtual servitude, keeping her hidden in plain sight, using her as leverage or a twisted trophy while trying to force Alejandro into a marriage that would consolidate their corporate empire.
"They knew," Alejandro whispered, his eyes blazing with vengeance. "They knew who you were all along."
