Chapter 3 - The Money in Claire's Name

Claire didn't open the door immediately.
She carried Jonah upstairs, placed him in the bassinet, activated the monitor, then called the Rye Police Department.
The dispatcher confirmed that federal investigators were at her address.
Only then did she go downstairs.
Two people waited outside.
Special Agent Rebecca Sloan was in her early forties, composed and direct.
Her partner, Agent Malik Turner, appeared slightly younger.
They showed identification.
Claire let them inside.
“Is my husband under investigation?”
Sloan and Turner exchanged a glance.
“We're investigating financial transactions connected to his employer.”
“Is Daniel a suspect?”
“We're not prepared to characterize anyone's status yet.”
Claire almost smiled.
“That means yes.”
“It means we're gathering facts.”
Claire showed them the anonymous email.
Sloan's expression sharpened.
“May I see the photograph?”
Claire handed her the phone.
Sloan enlarged it.
Turner leaned closer.
Neither spoke for several seconds.
“You've seen this before,” Claire said.
Sloan looked at her.
“We've seen portions of these records.”
“My name is on them.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“That is something we're trying to determine.”
Claire sat down.
The house suddenly felt unfamiliar.
“What account is that?”
Turner answered.
“An offshore account registered through a holding company.”
“I don't have an offshore account.”
“We understand.”
“No, I don't think you do. I'm telling you I've never opened anything like that.”
Sloan's voice softened slightly.
“We believe you.”
Claire looked up.
“Then why are you here?”
“Because approximately $3.8 million passed through an account associated with your identity.”
Claire stopped breathing for a second.
“How?”
“That is what we need to determine.”
They asked questions for nearly an hour.
Had Claire signed financial documents recently?
No.
Did Daniel manage their finances?
Some investments, yes.
Did he have access to her Social Security number?
Of course.
Had she met Marcus Vale?
Never.
Vanessa Reed?
Once.
Years ago.
When they finished, Sloan handed Claire a card.
“Don't delete anything.”
“I won't.”
“And if anyone contacts you regarding the money, call me.”
Claire nodded.
The agents left.
She locked the door.
Then she called Daniel.
He answered immediately.
“Claire?”
“Federal agents were here.”
Silence.
“They said $3.8 million moved through an account connected to my identity.”
“Claire, listen—”
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“Did you use my information?”
“No.”
“Did you sign anything in my name?”
“Never.”
“Then someone did.”
“I know.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
Claire pressed her fingers against her forehead.
“Daniel, if you're lying to me now, there will be nothing left to save.”
“I swear to you.”
She heard fear in his voice.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“Where are you?”
“At Ethan's.”
“Stay there.”
“Claire—”
She ended the call.
For the next two hours, she searched their home office.
Tax documents.
Mortgage paperwork.
Insurance policies.
Bank statements.
Nothing unusual.
Then she found a folder behind a row of books.
Inside was a copy of a trust document.
MERCER FAMILY HOLDINGS.
Claire had never seen it.
Daniel's signature appeared on page eleven.
Her signature appeared beneath his.
Except Claire hadn't signed it.
She photographed everything.
Then she called Agent Sloan.
By noon, the agents were back.
Sloan examined the document.
“This matters.”
“Why?”
“Because this trust appears to be connected to the same network of accounts.”
Claire felt nauseated.
“Daniel's signature is real.”
“Are you certain?”
“Yes.”
“And yours?”
“Fake.”
Sloan photographed the pages.
“Don't confront anyone about this.”
“I already confronted Daniel.”
“About this document?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Claire stared at the signature.
“What happens if my husband did this?”
Sloan didn't answer immediately.
“If evidence shows he knowingly participated, there could be serious criminal consequences.”
Claire looked toward the ceiling.
Jonah was sleeping upstairs.
“How serious?”
“Federal prison serious.”
The words hollowed out the room.
That afternoon, Daniel called six times.
Claire ignored every call.
At 4:10, Ethan arrived.
Claire almost refused to let him inside.
But Ethan held up both hands.
“I'm not here for Daniel.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Because I think someone's framing him.”
Claire stared.
“Come inside.”
Ethan had known Daniel since childhood.
They weren't biological brothers.
Ethan's parents had taken Daniel in after Daniel's father died when he was sixteen.
Claire trusted Ethan.
Or she had.
Trust had become a dangerous currency.
Ethan placed a laptop on the kitchen table.
“Daniel showed me some of the documents Vanessa gave him.”
“You have copies?”
“No. But I saw something.”
He opened a spreadsheet.
“Daniel was supposedly approving transactions on days he wasn't even in the country.”
Claire frowned.
“What?”
“One authorization happened last October seventeenth.”
They had been in Canada.
Claire remembered.
Their anniversary trip to Montreal.
“Could he have approved it remotely?”
“Technically. But here's the problem.”
Ethan opened another file.
“The authentication came from Daniel's office terminal in Manhattan.”
Claire stared.
“So someone used his computer.”
“Maybe.”
“Who had access?”
“His assistant. IT. Senior partners.”
“And Marcus?”
“Not officially.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
“Not officially?”
Ethan hesitated.
“Harrington & Pierce hired Vale Strategic eighteen months ago.”
Claire's stomach tightened.
“So Marcus had access.”
“Possibly.”
“And Vanessa worked for Marcus.”
“Yes.”
Everything was connected.
But the shape of the connection remained invisible.
That evening, Claire received a call from the hospital.
Vanessa Reed had regained consciousness.
And she had asked for Claire.
Claire nearly refused.
Then curiosity won.
She arranged for her mother to stay with Jonah and drove into Manhattan.
Vanessa looked fragile.
Her face was pale.
An IV ran into her arm.
When Claire entered, Vanessa immediately began crying.
“I'm sorry.”
Claire remained near the door.
“For what?”
“For all of it.”
“Did you sleep with my husband?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
“Did you kiss him?”
“No.”
“The lipstick?”
“I hugged him.”
Claire folded her arms.
“Why should I believe you?”
“You shouldn't.”
That answer surprised her.
Vanessa wiped her face.
“But Daniel didn't cheat on you.”
“He lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“He abandoned me.”
“Yes.”
“And you asked him to.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
At least she didn't pretend otherwise.
“Why is my name attached to stolen money?”
Vanessa opened her eyes.
“Because Marcus needed someone innocent.”
Claire went still.
“What?”
“He builds layers. Real identities. Real families. People who don't know they're being used.”
“Why me?”
“Because of Daniel.”
Claire stepped closer.
“Explain.”
“Marcus had access to employee records through consulting projects. Social Security numbers. spouses. beneficiaries. Everything.”
Claire felt sick.
“He stole my identity?”
“Yes.”
“Did Daniel know?”
“No.”
“How can you be sure?”
“Because I helped Marcus do it.”
Claire stared at her.
Vanessa began crying again.
“I didn't know what the system was at first. By the time I understood, I was already involved.”
“You committed fraud.”
“Yes.”
“And now you're trying to save yourself.”
“Yes.”
The honesty was brutal.
“Why contact Daniel?”
“Because Marcus started moving everything toward him.”
“What does that mean?”
“He was preparing Daniel to take the fall.”
Claire remembered the documents.
The signatures.
The accounts.
“Why?”
“Because Daniel discovered irregularities months ago.”
“He never told me.”
“He didn't understand what he'd found.”
Vanessa reached toward the bedside table.
“There is something else.”
“What?”
“Marcus wasn't working alone.”
Claire waited.
Vanessa's expression changed.
“Someone inside Harrington & Pierce gave him everything.”
“Who?”
Vanessa glanced toward the hospital door.
“I don't know if it's safe.”
Claire almost laughed.
“You called me here.”
“I thought we had more time.”
“For what?”
Vanessa's monitor beeped steadily.
Then the hospital door slowly opened.
A man in an expensive charcoal suit stepped inside.
Claire recognized him instantly.
Richard Harrington.
Daniel's boss.
The managing partner of Harrington & Pierce.
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at Claire.
May you like
And smiled.
“I was hoping I'd find both of you together.”
