Chapter 5 - What Marcus Really Wanted

Vivien ran outside.

"Mom!"

Nothing.

Only darkness.

Adrian caught up.

"Stop."

"He took her."

"We don't know that."

"The door is open."

"We also don't know whether she left willingly."

Vivien turned on him.

"Why would she?"

"Because she's spent eleven years surviving people who know every weakness she has."

Vivien hated that answer.

Because it made sense.

Adrian called Caleb.

No response.

Again.

Nothing.

"Caleb stayed at the greenhouse," Vivien said.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

A minute later the phone rang.

Caleb.

Adrian answered.

"I'm alive."

"Where's Eleanor?"

"I thought she was with you."

"She's gone."

A pause.

"We found one attacker alive."

"Who sent them?"

"He isn't talking."

"Make him."

Vivien looked at Adrian.

He saw it.

His tone changed.

"Find a legal reason for him to become cooperative."

Vivien almost smiled despite the fear.

"That was for me."

"Mostly."

They returned to Houston through a route Adrian changed twice.

Vivien sat beside him in silence.

The black metal case rested between them.

Her mother's entire secret life might be inside it.

Adrian didn't open it.

Vivien noticed.

"You aren't curious?"

"Very."

"Then why haven't you opened it?"

"It's hers."

"That never stopped anyone else."

"I'm not anyone else."

Her throat tightened.

The SUV slowed at a light.

Vivien looked at his profile.

"You meant what you said at the greenhouse?"

"What?"

"About me deserving the truth."

"Yes."

"Even if it hurts you?"

Adrian looked at her.

"Especially then."

She wanted to kiss him.

The realization arrived with astonishing clarity.

Not because he was powerful.

Not because he was handsome.

Not because danger had confused fear with attraction.

She wanted to kiss him because he kept handing choices back to her when everyone else had stolen them.

Vivien looked out the window.

This was inconvenient.

Massively inconvenient.

They did not return to the penthouse.

Adrian brought her to a townhouse in River Oaks owned under a company name.

Inside, security checked every room.

Vivien opened Eleanor's metal case on the dining table.

The first file contained old bank records.

The second contained photographs.

One showed Daniel Ash and Dominic Vale standing beside a concrete vault door.

Another showed Eleanor at a computer terminal.

A third showed Victor Kane signing documents.

Then Vivien found an envelope labeled:

FOR VIVIEN ONLY.

She stared at it.

Adrian stepped away.

"I'll give you privacy."

"Stay."

He stopped.

Vivien opened the letter.

Her mother's handwriting.

Vivien,

If you are reading this, then the part of my life I tried to bury has found you anyway.

I owe you more apologies than any letter can hold.

But one truth matters before all others.

Marcus did not enter your life by accident.

Vivien swallowed.

She kept reading.

Victor sent him.

His assignment was simple: become close enough to you to obtain a biological sample and determine whether you carried the Ash access marker.

Adrian's face darkened.

Vivien continued.

Marcus succeeded.

That is why Victor stopped watching you from a distance.

But Marcus then did something Victor never expected.

He fell in love with control.

Not with you.

With controlling you.

Vivien's hands trembled.

Adrian moved closer but did not touch her.

She read silently for several lines.

Then stopped.

"What?"

Adrian asked.

Vivien looked up.

"Marcus tried to marry me because he thought marriage would give him legal access to anything I inherited."

Adrian said nothing.

"That's why he pushed so hard."

Vivien laughed bitterly.

"He said I was afraid of commitment."

She looked back at the page.

But the letter continued.

Marcus made one mistake.

He assumed Vault 317 was property.

It isn't.

It is evidence.

The archive contains enough proof to expose every criminal network Dominic Vale tried to leave behind, including Victor's theft, bribery, blackmail, and multiple murders disguised as accidents.

Vivien stopped.

Her father's death.

She already knew.

Before she reached the next line, she knew.

Daniel's crash was not an accident.

Vivien closed her eyes.

Adrian said her name.

She held up one finger.

Not yet.

She finished.

Victor ordered the crash.

Marcus's father had nothing to do with it because Marcus Harrow is not Marcus Harrow.

Vivien's eyes opened.

"What?"

Adrian stepped closer.

She handed him the letter.

He read.

His face changed.

"Marcus Harrow died as a child."

Vivien stared.

"What does that mean?"

"It means the man you dated is using a dead person's identity."

"Then who is he?"

Adrian kept reading.

No answer.

Only a line.

His real identity is inside Vault 317.

Vivien stood.

"We go."

"Not tonight."

"Adrian."

"We don't even know where the vault is."

She looked at the number.

"Your father's records."

He shook his head.

"317 wasn't an address."

"The grave."

"What?"

"Marcus's father's grave had the number beneath it."

"Yes."

"Why there?"

Adrian understood.

"A marker."

"Maybe."

They pulled the cemetery map.

Plot 317 belonged not to Elliot Harrow.

The cemetery's section numbers placed Elliot in 311.

Plot 317 was six spaces away.

Unmarked.

Adrian looked at her.

"We go at dawn."

Vivien almost protested.

Then she saw how exhausted he looked.

"Fine."

At six fifteen, they returned with Caleb and two men.

Plot 317 had no headstone.

Ground-penetrating equipment identified something beneath the soil.

Not a coffin.

A concrete access shaft.

By seven, they exposed a steel hatch.

Adrian's biometric scan unlocked the first mechanism.

Vivien placed her hand against the second.

A green light appeared.

The hatch opened.

Stairs descended.

"That was too easy," Caleb said.

Adrian agreed.

"No one's been able to open it alone."

Vivien looked down.

"So nobody needed to guard it."

They descended.

At the bottom stood a steel door.

VALE.

ASH.

Two palm scanners.

They placed their hands simultaneously.

The door unlocked.

Inside was not money.

Not gold.

Not weapons.

Servers.

Boxes.

Documents.

Twenty years of evidence.

Vivien approached a central desk.

A folder waited there.

MARCUS HARROW.

She opened it.

The first photograph showed the man she knew as Marcus at age nineteen.

Different name.

MATTHEW KANE.

Vivien looked up.

"Kane."

Adrian took the folder.

"Victor's son."

The realization hit.

Marcus had not merely worked for Victor.

He was Victor's son.

Everything was inheritance.

Everything was revenge.

Then a speaker activated.

Victor's voice filled the vault.

"Congratulations."

Adrian turned toward the ceiling.

"You opened it."

Vivien spun toward the entrance.

The steel door slammed shut.

A red light flashed.

Victor continued.

"Dominic always believed the next generation would be smarter."

Adrian rushed to the control panel.

Locked.

"But he forgot something."

Vivien looked at him.

"What?"

Victor answered.

"Children repeat their parents' mistakes."

Gas hissed from a ceiling vent.

Caleb shouted, "Masks!"

They had none.

Adrian ripped off his jacket and shoved it against the vent.

Vivien coughed.

A second speaker came alive.

Marcus.

Or Matthew.

"Vivien."

Her heart froze.

"I tried to keep you away from this."

She stared upward.

"You used me."

"I protected you."

"No."

His voice changed.

"You think Vale protects people?"

Adrian ignored him, searching for a mechanical release.

"Ask Adrian what his father did to mine."

Vivien looked at Adrian.

"What is he talking about?"

"I don't know."

Marcus laughed.

"Of course he doesn't."

Vivien's vision blurred.

Caleb found an emergency panel.

"Sir."

Adrian ripped it open.

Wires.

Manual mechanism.

He pulled.

Nothing.

Vivien sank to one knee.

Adrian immediately moved to her.

"Look at me."

"I can't breathe."

"You can."

He cupped her face.

"Stay with me."

She looked into his eyes.

His face was inches away.

"You said whoever marries me would be lucky."

His expression broke for one second.

"This is not the time."

"It might be."

"No."

He shook his head.

"You do not get to say goodbye."

Vivien smiled faintly.

"I wasn't."

Adrian leaned closer.

"Good."

Behind them, Caleb shouted.

"Found it."

A steel lever moved.

The vault door unlocked.

Fresh air rushed in.

Adrian lifted Vivien to her feet.

They stumbled out.

A gun clicked.

Marcus stood at the top of the stairs.

Victor beside him.

And between them, Eleanor Ash.

Her hands were tied.

Marcus smiled.

"Now we can finally talk."

May you like

Then he pointed the gun directly at Adrian.

"Starting with why his father murdered mine."
