Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Sixteen Years

Nathan sprinted back across the street, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The pieces were swirling in his head, forming a terrifying picture he couldn't quite fully comprehend yet.

He burst through the front door. Eleanor was sitting at the kitchen table in the dark, her face buried in her hands. When the light clicked on, she jumped, looking up with wide, tear-streaked eyes.

"Nathan—"

"I saw the video," Nathan said, his voice shaking with a mix of adrenaline, relief, and deep anger. "I saw Art Henderson's camera footage from yesterday afternoon."

Eleanor went entirely still. The color drained completely from her lips.

"You didn't hurt her," Nathan continued, stepping closer to the table. "You shielded her. You took the brunt of that impact against the patio bench to save her from him. But because you fell on top of her, she got bruised. And she was terrified because she didn't understand what was happening!"

Eleanor dropped her head back into her hands, letting out a jagged, heartbroken sob.

"Who was that man, Eleanor?" Nathan demanded softly, kneeling beside her chair. "Why did Julian Vance come to our house?"

At the sound of the name, Eleanor shivered. Julian Vance. Sixteen years ago, before Nathan and Eleanor had even met, Eleanor had been a young law clerk in Atlanta. She had accidentally uncovered a massive, illegal land-fraud operation run by Vance—a powerful, ruthless real estate developer with deep criminal ties. When Eleanor agreed to testify as a key whistleblower, Vance’s empire collapsed. He was sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison.

Before he was taken away in handcuffs, Vance had looked directly at Eleanor in the courtroom corridor and made a quiet, chilling promise: “Fifteen years goes by fast, little girl. When I get out, I will take everything you love.”

Eleanor had tried to put the trauma behind her. She moved to Savannah, met Nathan, built a peaceful life, and eventually stopped looking over her shoulder. Over time, the nightmare faded into a distant memory—a secret from her youth that she buried deep, hoping it would never touch the innocent life she built with Nathan.

"He got released three weeks ago," Eleanor choked out, her voice cracked with terror. "I received a letter last month with no return address. Just a photo of Lily playing at her elementary school playground."

Nathan felt a wave of horror wash over him. "Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you go to the police?!"

"Because he threatened to kill you, Nathan!" Eleanor cried out, gripping his wrists. "He said if I involved law enforcement or told you, he would make sure you never made it home from one of your business trips. He told me he was watching our house. He demanded fifty thousand dollars in cash—every bit of savings I had access to—or he would take Lily!"

"So yesterday..." Nathan whispered, understanding finally dawning on him.

"Yesterday he came to collect the cash," Eleanor sobbed. "I went out to the patio to hand him the envelope. I thought if I gave him the money, he would leave forever. But Lily had followed me outside without me knowing. She stepped out onto the porch just as Julian grabbed the money. He made a move toward her—I don't know if he was going to grab her or just push her away—and I panicked. I threw myself over her and shoved us both back against the iron bench. I took the brunt of it, but... but she was trapped beneath me."

Eleanor looked up at Nathan, her eyes filled with unbearable pain. "When Julian drove away, I was frantic. I told Lily, 'Mommy said nobody would believe me if I told them how dangerous this man is'... but in her confusion and fear, she thought I meant nobody would believe her about her back. I was trying to keep her safe, Nathan! I was trying to keep both of you safe! I was so scared that if you knew, you would try to fight him and get hurt!"

Nathan pulled Eleanor into his arms, holding her tightly as she wept against his shoulder. The anger he had felt hours ago evaporated completely, replaced by a fierce, burning resolve.

"You don't have to protect us alone anymore, Eleanor," Nathan whispered into her hair. "We are in this together. But we are done running, and we are done hiding."
