Chapter 2 - The File That Shouldn’t Exist

“Elena.”

The voice came again.

Dante moved instantly.

He stepped between Elena and the open door.

Mara backed away.

Several nearby guests turned, but from their angle, the doorway appeared empty.

Dante’s hand lifted slightly.

Two men from his security detail moved across the room without being called.

“Elena,” the voice repeated.

She recognized it.

Not immediately.

But enough to make her heart race.

“Wait.”

Dante looked at her.

“You know them?”

“I think so.”

A woman stepped into the light.

Elena stopped breathing.

“Nora?”

Nora Bell had worked at Mercer Urban Development when Elena was still dating Julian.

She had been Julian’s executive assistant.

Then one morning, three years earlier, she disappeared.

No goodbye.

No resignation party.

No social media.

Nothing.

Julian told everyone Nora had moved to Denver.

Elena had believed him.

Nora looked different now.

Thinner.

Shorter hair.

No makeup.

Her hands trembled around the strap of an old leather bag.

“You can’t stand here,” Nora whispered.

Dante did not move.

“Why?”

Nora stared at him.

Fear crossed her face.

Not fear of Dante.

Fear of being seen with Elena.

“They have cameras everywhere.”

Elena stepped around Dante.

“Who does?”

Nora’s eyes filled.

“You were never supposed to get this far.”

Elena stared at her.

“With Haven Point?”

“With Julian.”

Dante glanced toward the ballroom.

“Elena.”

She understood.

Too exposed.

Dante motioned toward a private conference room beside the presentation hall.

His security team cleared it within seconds.

Nora entered reluctantly.

Elena followed.

Mara remained outside to protect the display.

Dante closed the door.

“Start talking.”

Nora looked at him.

“You really are her husband.”

“Yes.”

She gave Elena a strange look.

Almost relief.

“You finally found someone Julian couldn’t scare.”

Elena sat opposite her.

“Nora, what happened to you?”

Nora placed the leather bag on the table.

“For three years, I’ve been trying to decide whether I should tell you.”

“Tell me what?”

“That leaving Julian didn’t end anything.”

Elena’s chest tightened.

Nora opened the bag.

Inside were copies of invoices, project reports, emails, and bank records.

Dante picked up the first page.

Elena watched his expression change.

“What is it?”

“Shell corporations.”

Nora nodded.

“Mercer Development created consulting firms that didn’t really exist. They billed city projects for services nobody performed.”

Elena turned toward Nora.

“What does that have to do with me?”

“Your designs.”

Silence.

Nora pulled out another document.

Elena recognized it instantly.

The Westgate Municipal Center.

Her first major project while working for Julian.

Except Julian’s name appeared as lead architect.

Nora placed the original design sketches beside it.

Elena’s signature was visible at the bottom.

“You kept these?”

“I copied everything before I left.”

Elena stared at them.

She had spent years telling herself she no longer cared.

She had built her own studio.

Won her own clients.

Earned her own reputation.

But seeing proof that Julian had stolen her work reopened something she thought had healed.

“Why?”

“Because the designs weren’t the worst part.”

Nora pushed another folder toward her.

Dante opened it.

Photographs.

Construction defects.

Cracked concrete.

Incorrect reinforcement.

Water damage.

A collapsed parking deck.

Elena recognized the projects.

Mercer buildings.

“What am I looking at?”

Nora’s voice trembled.

“Cost cutting.”

Julian had substituted cheaper materials.

Falsified inspection reports.

Bribed intermediaries.

The savings moved into shell companies.

Elena looked up.

“People could have died.”

“One person did.”

The sentence landed heavily.

Nora reached inside the bag again.

A newspaper clipping.

CONSTRUCTION WORKER KILLED IN WESTGATE SITE ACCIDENT.

Elena remembered.

Everyone did.

Julian called it tragic.

Unavoidable.

Nora looked at her.

“It wasn’t.”

Dante leaned forward.

“How do you know?”

“I processed the purchase orders.”

Elena covered her mouth.

“The support brackets.”

Nora nodded.

“They failed inspection two weeks before the accident. Julian ordered replacements on paper. But he never bought them.”

Elena felt sick.

“Why wasn’t this reported?”

“I tried.”

Nora looked down.

“To Councilman Vale.”

Elena went still.

The empty chair.

The confidential folder.

“Vale covered it up.”

“He did more than that.”

Nora pulled out a photograph.

Julian and Councilman Vale sat together inside a private restaurant.

Between them was a man Elena recognized from the development board’s legal team.

Three men.

One envelope.

One camera timestamp.

Nora whispered, “They’ve been fixing public contracts for years.”

Dante leaned back.

“And Haven Point?”

“They want Mercer’s competing project to win.”

Elena’s mind raced.

Mercer’s plan involved luxury towers, private retail, and almost no affordable housing.

If Julian received the waterfront contract, his company stood to make hundreds of millions.

“The altered structural file,” Elena said.

Nora nodded.

“They’ll disqualify you tomorrow morning.”

“It’s being announced tonight.”

“No.”

Elena frowned.

Nora looked terrified.

“That’s what they told the public.”

Dante’s eyes narrowed.

“What happens tomorrow?”

“The closed technical review.”

Elena knew about it.

A final internal verification of the top proposals.

Usually a formality.

Nora continued.

“They’re going to claim your foundation plan violates safety regulations. Vale will request an investigation. Mercer wins by default.”

Elena thought about the message.

THE FILE WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

“Why warn me now?”

Nora’s expression broke.

“Because I helped them.”

Elena said nothing.

Nora began crying silently.

“I gave Julian your old password format.”

Elena stood.

Dante’s hand moved toward her, but she shook her head.

“You helped him access my account?”

“I didn’t know what he was planning.”

“You disappeared for three years and came back the night my entire company could be destroyed?”

“I know.”

“No, Nora. You don’t.”

“I know because he destroyed mine first.”

Elena stopped.

Nora wiped her face.

“When I tried reporting Westgate, Vale told Julian. Julian accused me of stealing company information. He threatened to have me prosecuted.”

“So you ran.”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

“I’m tired of running.”

Dante studied her.

“You could take this to federal investigators.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Two months ago.”

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

Dante’s expression sharpened.

“Nothing?”

Nora shook her head.

“The investigator assigned to my complaint stopped answering.”

Elena and Dante exchanged a look.

That was worse.

Much worse.

Dante walked toward the window overlooking the ballroom.

Julian had returned.

He was speaking with Councilman Vale.

The blue folder was no longer visible.

Dante asked, “Do you have originals?”

Nora hesitated.

“Some.”

“Where?”

“Safe place.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“It’s the answer I’m giving.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Dante.”

He looked at her.

“She’s scared.”

“She should be.”

Nora gave a humorless laugh.

“You really don’t trust anyone.”

“No.”

Elena almost smiled despite everything.

“He’s consistent.”

Nora looked at them.

Then at Elena’s wedding ring.

“You never told anyone.”

“About Dante?”

“About being married.”

“We wanted something that belonged to us.”

Dante turned from the window.

“And Elena didn’t want people assuming my money built her firm.”

Nora nodded slowly.

“That’s why Julian didn’t know.”

“That’s why most people didn’t.”

Nora stood.

“Then you have one advantage.”

“What?”

“He thinks you’re still isolated.”

Elena looked through the glass.

Julian was laughing with Vale.

Camille stood beside him.

Something about Camille’s posture bothered Elena.

She was no longer amused.

She looked tense.

Watching the exits.

“What about Camille?” Elena asked.

Nora followed her gaze.

“Camille Rhodes?”

“She’s with Julian.”

Nora’s expression changed immediately.

“Elena.”

“What?”

“You need to get away from her.”

“Why?”

Nora grabbed her bag.

“I have to go.”

“Nora.”

“I shouldn’t have come here.”

Dante blocked the door.

“You’re not leaving until you answer.”

Nora stared at him.

“Then you’re going to get me killed.”

Dante’s voice remained calm.

“Who is Camille Rhodes?”

Nora lowered her eyes.

“She isn’t Julian’s girlfriend.”

Elena felt the air leave her lungs.

“Then who is she?”

Nora looked toward the glass wall.

Camille was gone.

“She works for Vale.”

Dante opened the door.

One of his men approached immediately.

“Find the blonde woman who was with Mercer.”

The guard nodded.

Nora stepped into the hall.

“Elena, listen to me. Do not trust anyone on the review board.”

“I understand.”

“No. You don’t.”

Nora gripped Elena’s wrist.

“There’s someone inside your company, too.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

“That’s how they got the final engineering file.”

Mara appeared from around the corner.

“Elena!”

Everyone turned.

She was running.

“Someone just deleted the backup server.”

Elena stared at her.

“All of it?”

“Haven Point. Contracts. Drawings. Everything.”

Dante pulled out his phone.

“Lock the building.”

Mara shook her head.

“They’re not here.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I checked the remote access log.”

She handed Elena the tablet.

One active connection appeared.

A familiar name.

Someone Elena had trusted for six years.

Her business partner.

SAMUEL REED.

Elena stared at the screen.

Then another notification appeared beneath his login.

A live message.

DON’T COME TO THE OFFICE.

Elena tapped it.

A second line appeared.

THEY’RE WAITING FOR YOU.

Then the security feed from Elena’s studio loaded by itself.

The front door opened.

May you like

Samuel Reed walked inside.

And behind him came Julian Mercer.
