Chapter 11 - The Truth About Europe

Smoke entered beneath the library door.

“Fire,” Kate whispered.

Luciano hit the door.

Locked.

Matteo ran to the windows.

Sealed.

Marco searched the fireplace passage.

“There.”

The hidden compartment extended into an old service tunnel.

Luciano helped Kate through first.

They escaped into the garden as flames consumed the library curtains.

Fire crews arrived.

Dr. Bennett was gone.

His hospital credentials had been disabled minutes earlier.

Luciano called the NICU.

No answer.

Kate saw his face.

“Nico.”

They raced back.

The NICU was secure.

Nico was safe.

But Bennett had accessed his chart before disappearing.

He had downloaded genetic information.

Matteo understood first.

“He needs proof.”

“Of what?”

“That Nico is an Aruri heir.”

Bennett had not worked only for Vittorio.

He had worked for someone else.

The ledger contained payments from an offshore account unrelated to Vittorio.

Marco traced it.

A European holding company.

Luciano recognized the name.

He had negotiated with it during his seven months abroad.

The Moretti organization.

Kate stared.

“So your trip to Europe—”

“Wasn't business expansion.”

“What was it?”

Luciano finally told her.

He had learned someone planned to attack Hawthorne Ridge.

He believed his enemies would target Kate.

So he left publicly.

Made the marriage appear broken.

Allowed everyone to believe she no longer mattered to him.

Kate stared.

“You left to protect me.”

“Yes.”

“And never told me.”

“Yes.”

“Do you understand how insane that sounds?”

“Now?”

She almost shouted.

“Now?”

He nodded.

“I thought distance was protection.”

“It was abandonment.”

“I know.”

“Why didn't you trust me?”

“Because everyone I loved became leverage.”

She looked toward the NICU.

“And now?”

“Now I understand keeping people ignorant doesn't keep them safe.”

That was the first apology she believed.

Not because he said sorry.

Because he understood what he had done.

Marco found Bennett at a private airfield.

He was arrested before boarding.

Under questioning, he confessed.

Vittorio had initially paid him to falsify records.

Bennett refused.

Then another group threatened his family.

He altered the genetic record but secretly preserved originals.

He had been trying to survive both sides.

“Who is the second group?” Luciano asked.

Bennett gave a name.

Gabriel Moretti.

Luciano knew him.

His European rival.

But the motive was not money.

Gabriel believed the Aruris had ordered his father's death decades earlier.

He wanted Vittorio destroyed.

And Luciano with him.

The marriage had been collateral damage.

The premature birth had become opportunity.

Two enemies had independently manipulated the same family.

Luciano felt sick.

His world had been built on inherited revenge.

Nico slept under warm lights, unaware.

Luciano made a decision.

“I meet Gabriel.”

Kate shook her head.

“Not alone.”

“No.”

He looked at Matteo.

“With my brother.”

Matteo smiled.

“That's going to take getting used to.”

The meeting occurred under federal supervision.

Gabriel expected threats.

Luciano brought documents.

Records proving Vittorio, not Alessandro, had ordered the killing that started the Moretti feud.

Gabriel read them.

His anger slowly changed direction.

“You expect peace?”

“I expect the truth to be more useful than another funeral.”

“And your organization?”

“Ending.”

Gabriel looked genuinely surprised.

“You'll walk away?”

“Yes.”

“For a woman?”

Luciano shook his head.

“For myself.”

Then added:

“And for my family.”

Gabriel agreed to cooperate with investigators.

Years of conflict ended not with bullets but evidence.

When Luciano returned to the hospital, Kate was asleep beside Nico's incubator.

He sat beside her.

She woke.

“Did you kill anyone?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“Disappointed?”

“Deeply.”

He smiled.

She rested her head against his shoulder.

It was not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But it was the first time she had touched him without fear or necessity.

Nico opened his eyes.

Luciano placed a finger beside his hand.

Tiny fingers closed around him.

Kate whispered, “He knows you.”

Luciano swallowed.

“I hope so.”

A nurse entered.

“Mrs. Aruri?”

“Yes?”

“A woman is asking for you.”

“Who?”

“She says her name is Sofia.”

Luciano stood.

His aunt entered carrying an old suitcase.

She placed it on the floor.

“I found this in Vittorio's house.”

“What is it?”

“Elena's.”

Matteo arrived.

Sofia opened the case.

Inside were their mother's belongings.

Two knitted baby blankets.

Two bracelets.

Two letters.

One for Luciano.

One for Matteo.

And beneath them, a sealed medical document.

Kate lifted it.

“What's this?”

Sofia looked at both brothers.

“The reason Vittorio separated you.”

Luciano opened the envelope.

He read the first line.

Then stopped.

Matteo took the page.

His face changed too.

Kate whispered, “What does it say?”

May you like

Luciano looked at his twin.

“Only one of us is Alessandro Aruri's biological son.”
