Chapter 6 - Twelve Doctors and One Final Test

"Nobody leaves this floor."
Luca's order echoed through the corridor.
Gideon was already moving.
Norah grabbed his arm.
"You can barely walk."
"I can walk."
"You can also fall."
"Norah."
"Gideon."
Sebastian stared at them.
"This is fascinating, but perhaps we could argue after we stop whoever is robbing the vault."
Gideon glared.
Norah won.
The wheelchair appeared.
The vault was located behind Elena's former dressing room.
When security arrived, the outer door was open.
No forced entry.
Whoever had entered knew the code.
The inner safe remained locked.
A man stood in front of it.
Dr. Malcolm Voss.
Luca raised his weapon.
"Hands."
Voss slowly raised them.
Norah stared.
"You lied to me."
"Yes."
"About my mother."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Rebecca asked me to."
Norah's anger faltered.
"What?"
Voss turned carefully.
"She contacted me four years ago because she had finally found Elena's missing records."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"She made me promise."
"She's dead."
"I know."
"That promise should have died with her."
Voss looked ashamed.
"Maybe."
Gideon spoke.
"Why are you inside my vault?"
"Because someone sent me the same recording they sent you."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"How did you get the code?"
Voss held up his phone.
"It arrived with the recording."
Someone was guiding all of them.
Norah looked at the safe.
"Use the combination from Elena's ledger."
Gideon did.
The safe opened.
Inside were legal documents, jewelry, old cash, and several sealed boxes.
One had GIDEON written across it.
Norah lifted it.
Inside was a portable hard drive.
And a letter.
Rebecca's handwriting.
Norah couldn't breathe for a moment.
She opened it.
Rebecca had found evidence connecting Elena's medical manipulation to a financial scheme inside Wolf Holdings.
But she had not identified one person.
She had identified three.
Leonard Mercer had unknowingly provided the medical vulnerability by discussing Elena's medication interactions.
Diane Cross had been coerced into altering records.
A senior Wolf Holdings executive had coordinated the financial cover.
The name had been redacted from Rebecca's paper copy.
The hard drive contained the original.
Luca connected it to an isolated laptop.
Encrypted.
Norah knew the password.
Her mother used the same one for everything important.
Norah's childhood nickname followed by her birthday.
The drive opened.
Files filled the screen.
Bank transfers.
Scanned letters.
Audio recordings.
Medical records.
Emails.
Then a folder titled GW.
Gideon opened it.
The first document was eleven years old.
A payment authorization.
Signed by Gideon's father.
August Wolf.
Gideon stopped.
"My father?"
Sebastian moved closer.
The records showed something more complicated than murder.
August Wolf had discovered financial theft inside his company.
He suspected a longtime executive.
Elena had discovered the same thing independently.
But before she could expose it, someone manipulated her supplements and medical paperwork.
August learned the truth too late.
Instead of going to police, he buried the scandal to protect the family empire.
He paid witnesses.
He silenced Diane.
He forced Mercer into retirement.
And he told Gideon that Elena's death had been unavoidable.
Gideon's face became empty.
"My father knew."
Norah touched his arm.
He didn't pull away.
But August was not the person who had harmed Elena.
Rebecca had identified that person.
The name appeared in an email.
CHARLES VALE.
Gideon's former chief operating officer.
A man who had supposedly died six years earlier.
Sebastian frowned.
"Vale is dead."
Luca searched.
The death certificate came from a private clinic.
Signed by—
Leonard Mercer.
Voss stared at the screen.
"That's impossible."
"You signed it," Gideon said.
"No."
Voss leaned closer.
"My signature is forged."
Again.
The same method.
A forged medical record.
A convenient death.
A vanished man.
Charles Vale might still be alive.
And if he was, he had spent eleven years hiding.
Why return now?
Because Gideon's forensic audit had begun uncovering the old financial network.
The eighty-six million dollars wasn't new theft.
It was money being moved out before the network was discovered.
Norah felt the final shape of the story emerging.
Vale had harmed Elena to protect his theft.
August covered it up.
Rebecca discovered the cover-up years later.
Then Rebecca died.
Now Gideon had reopened the financial trail without knowing its history.
Vale used the same strategy again.
Not a dramatic attack.
A slow medical collapse.
One that could be blamed on natural disease.
And when Norah noticed the mistake, she became the scapegoat.
"Where is Vale?" Gideon asked.
Nobody knew.
Then Norah looked at Rebecca's photograph again.
The café.
Voss.
A third person was reflected in the window behind them.
She enlarged the image.
An older man.
Silver hair.
A scar near his jaw.
Voss went pale.
"That's Mercer."
Leonard Mercer was still part of this.
Security located him at his home.
He agreed to come voluntarily.
By dawn, all twelve doctors who had treated Gideon were summoned back to the estate.
Gideon wanted the final medical findings documented in front of witnesses.
No more hidden records.
No more private alterations.
Twelve specialists reviewed the data.
The conclusion was unanimous.
Gideon had been genuinely ill.
But his decline had been significantly worsened by a deliberate combination of ordinary substances, medication interactions, dehydration, and manipulated supplementation.
No single component looked like an obvious attack.
Together, they could have killed him.
Norah had broken the chain because she noticed the grapefruit warning.
One tiny mistake.
Vale's mistake.
He had assumed the new medication could be added without changing the established breakfast routine.
The grapefruit made the interaction visible.
Mercer arrived at 8:10 a.m.
He looked exhausted.
When shown Rebecca's files, he confessed.
Not to hurting Elena.
To cowardice.
Eleven years earlier, Vale had pressured him to remain silent after Mercer realized Elena's medical records had been altered.
Mercer signed a confidentiality agreement.
August Wolf paid him.
Years later, Vale forced him to create a false death certificate.
"Why?" Gideon asked.
"Because he had evidence that could destroy my career."
"You let my mother die."
"No."
Mercer's voice cracked.
"I discovered the manipulation afterward."
"And Rebecca?"
Mercer looked at Norah.
"I didn't hurt your mother."
"Who did?"
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"I'm not."
Norah placed Rebecca's photograph on the table.
"She was investigating you."
"No. She was meeting Voss because she wanted to find Vale."
"Then how did she die?"
Mercer lowered his eyes.
"She had cancer."
Norah froze.
"My mother died of kidney failure."
"After chemotherapy."
"I know."
"Rebecca was already very sick when she found the records."
Norah's anger suddenly lost direction.
Her mother's death had not been part of the scheme.
She had genuinely been ill.
Rebecca had spent her final months trying to finish what Elena started.
Not because someone forced her.
Because she couldn't live with the truth remaining buried.
Norah cried quietly.
Gideon took her hand.
He did it in front of everyone.
She let him.
Then Luca entered.
"We found Diane Cross."
Alive.
Police had located her at an abandoned rental property after tracing data from Adrian's photograph.
She identified the man who had held her.
Not Charles Vale.
His son.
Ethan Vale.
Thirty-six years old.
A financial consultant who had worked under another name.
For Wolf Holdings.
Norah looked at Sebastian.
"Where?"
Sebastian was already searching employee records.
Then his face changed.
"Ethan Vale doesn't work at headquarters."
"Where does he work?"
Sebastian turned the laptop.
The photograph showed a familiar face.
Norah knew him.
Everyone in the estate did.
He had been there throughout Gideon's illness.
Not as a doctor.
Not as security.
As the outside medical coordinator who managed deliveries, appointments, and access between the estate and visiting specialists.
Daniel Hart.
His real name was Ethan Vale.
He had access to the medication room.
The kitchen schedules.
Security credentials.
Medical records.
And Gideon's bedroom.
Luca immediately ordered the estate searched.
No Ethan.
His vehicle was gone.
Then Gideon's phone rang.
A video call.
He answered.
Ethan appeared.
Behind him sat Adrian Cross.
Alive.
Ethan smiled.
"Good morning, Gideon."
Gideon's expression turned cold.
"Where are you?"
"Close."
"What do you want?"
"The hard drive."
"No."
Ethan's smile disappeared.
"You don't understand what your father buried."
"I understand enough."
"Then you understand why that drive can't survive."
Gideon looked toward Luca.
Luca was already tracing the call.
Ethan continued.
"Bring it yourself."
"Where?"
A location appeared on the screen.
The old Wolf Holdings river warehouse.
Gideon laughed once.
"You think I'm coming alone?"
"No."
Ethan looked directly into the camera.
"Bring Norah."
Her stomach dropped.
Gideon immediately said, "No."
Ethan smiled again.
"Then Adrian doesn't come home."
The screen went black.
Norah looked at Gideon.
"Don't even think about it," he said.
She already was.
Then Luca's technician shouted from across the room.
"We traced another signal."
"Where?"
The technician looked confused.
"Not the warehouse."
Gideon frowned.
"Then where?"
The technician turned the screen.
The signal was coming from inside the estate.
May you like
From the room directly beneath them.
And somebody had just unlocked its door.
