Chapter 3 - The Evidence Gabriel Forgot

Colonel Richard Hale looked directly into the security camera.

I had known Richard since Bosnia.

He had attended my wife’s funeral.

He had held Chloe when she was a baby.

And now the footage showed him collecting evidence my daughter had secretly mailed to me.

Thomas stared at the monitor.

“Call him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to know why he thinks I don't know.”

We requested preservation of the footage and provided the information to investigators.

Then I went back to the hospital.

Chloe was sitting up.

Color had returned to her face.

When I mentioned Richard, she went still.

“You know him?”

“I saw him at Victoria’s house.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

That hit harder than I expected.

“What was he doing there?”

“I don't know. Gabriel told me he was some consultant.”

“Did Richard see you?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“He asked about you.”

“What exactly?”

Chloe thought.

“He asked whether you were still traveling for work.”

I felt something inside me settle into place.

This was no longer only about Gabriel.

That didn't lessen what Chloe had endured.

It made the situation more dangerous.

She reached for my hand.

“Dad, what aren't you telling me?”

I had spent years hiding my position because I wanted her life separated from mine.

That choice had failed.

So I told her.

Not classified information.

Not operational details.

Just the truth.

“I’m still serving.”

She stared at me.

“As what?”

“You already saw the document.”

Her mouth opened slightly.

“Lieutenant General?”

“Yes.”

“Three stars?”

“Yes.”

She looked almost offended.

“You let Gabriel call you a washed-up sergeant at Thanksgiving.”

“I didn't particularly care.”

“I defended you!”

“I appreciated it.”

She stared another second.

Then, unexpectedly, she laughed.

It hurt her, and she pressed a hand against her ribs.

“Don't make me laugh.”

“You're the one laughing.”

Her smile disappeared.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I wanted you to know who loved you without my position affecting it.”

“And now?”

“Now I think hiding things from people we love can have a cost.”

Chloe understood that sentence.

So did I.

That afternoon investigators searched areas of the Mercer property under appropriate legal authority.

Gabriel’s version of events was beginning to fracture.

Messages contradicted his timeline.

Medical evidence contradicted his claim that Chloe had simply collapsed after voluntarily taking medication.

And Chloe gave a formal statement.

It took nearly three hours.

I wasn't in the room.

That was her story to tell.

When she emerged, she looked exhausted.

But different.

She was no longer protecting Gabriel from the consequences of his own choices.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“I told them everything.”

I hugged her.

“I’m proud of you.”

The next breakthrough came from something Gabriel had forgotten.

Cloud backups.

He had deleted messages from Chloe’s phone.

He hadn't removed copies from another synchronized device.

There were hundreds.

Some were ordinary.

Some were cruel.

A few were chilling.

YOU WILL NOT EMBARRASS THIS FAMILY.

MY MOTHER CAN MAKE THIS DISAPPEAR.

NO ONE WILL BELIEVE YOU OVER US.

Then one message changed everything.

Gabriel had written:

YOUR FATHER CAN'T HELP YOU. WE KNOW EXACTLY WHO HE IS.

The date was seven months earlier.

Seven months.

The Mercers had known.

I showed Thomas.

“So your secret wasn't secret.”

“No.”

“Then why keep pretending?”

That was the question.

Gabriel had mocked my truck.

My pension.

My clothes.

My supposedly insignificant life.

If he knew my rank, why maintain the performance?

Because he wanted me to believe he didn't know.

Which meant the deception served a purpose.

Investigators found more.

A photograph of my vehicle.

My travel schedule.

Publicly unavailable details about events I had attended.

Nothing, by itself, proved a larger crime.

Together, they demanded scrutiny.

Richard Hale finally called that evening.

“Charles.”

“Richard.”

“We need to talk.”

“Yes.”

“Not on the phone.”

“Where?”

He named a diner halfway between Ocala and the base.

“No,” I said.

Silence.

“Why not?”

“Because you took my daughter’s package.”

Another silence.

Longer.

“Charles, listen carefully.”

“I’m listening.”

“I didn't take it for Victoria.”

“For whom?”

“I can't tell you.”

“Then we're done.”

“No. We are absolutely not done.”

His voice changed.

For the first time, Richard sounded afraid.

“Gabriel is dangerous, but he isn't the person you need to worry about.”

“Who is?”

“Victoria.”

“I already worry about Victoria.”

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

Richard breathed out.

“She knew your rank before Gabriel ever met Chloe.”

I stood.

“How?”

“I made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“I mentioned your daughter years ago at a private dinner.”

“You gave Victoria information about my family?”

“Not intentionally.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“I know.”

“What was in Chloe’s envelope?”

“I haven't opened it.”

“Where is it?”

“Safe.”

“Bring it to the authorities.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because someone is watching me.”

I nearly laughed.

Richard Hale had spent decades in environments where being watched was part of life.

He did not scare easily.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Then I heard a sound on his end.

A door.

Richard stopped speaking.

“Richard?”

Nothing.

“Richard.”

His voice returned as a whisper.

“Charles, the Mercers didn't choose Chloe because of Gabriel.”

Every muscle in my body tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“They chose Gabriel because of Chloe.”

The line went dead.

I called back.

No answer.

I contacted the appropriate authorities and reported the conversation.

Then I returned to Chloe’s room.

She was awake.

Mason was coloring beside her.

For the first time in days, the room looked almost normal.

Until Chloe said, “Dad, I remembered something.”

“What?”

“The night Gabriel proposed.”

She swallowed.

“Victoria said something strange.”

“What?”

“She said marrying Gabriel would finally connect the right families.”

My phone vibrated.

A photograph arrived from an unknown number.

Richard stood beside his car.

Behind him was Victoria Mercer.

The timestamp was from ten minutes earlier.

Then another message appeared:

ASK YOUR FRIEND WHAT HE GAVE HER.

Before I could answer, the hospital-room door slowly opened.

Richard Hale stepped inside.

And he was carrying Chloe’s missing envelope...
