Chapter 4 - The Man Who Never Died

Mara lowered her gun.

I grabbed her wrist.

"Don't."

Five local officers surrounded us.

Grant watched from the balcony.

He looked almost entertained.

"This is a setup," I said.

The lead officer glanced at me.

"Mrs. Whitaker, please step aside."

"She's a federal agent."

"Not anymore."

Mara's eyes narrowed.

"What evidence?"

The officer hesitated.

That hesitation mattered.

"Ask him," she said.

"Who?"

"Grant Whitaker."

No one moved.

Mara smiled bitterly.

"That's what I thought."

The officer reached for her.

Then Arthur appeared through the garden doors.

"Stop."

Evelyn spun toward him.

"Arthur."

He ignored her.

"Detective Monroe, before you arrest anyone, you may want to know that my son has maintained an illegal surveillance network for at least six years."

The garden became silent.

Grant's expression changed for the first time.

"Father."

Arthur continued.

"There are records upstairs."

Grant stepped forward.

"You have no idea what you're talking about."

"I know exactly what I'm talking about."

Evelyn slapped Arthur.

Everyone froze.

Arthur didn't react.

"I deserved that thirty years ago," he said quietly. "Not tonight."

Then he looked at the detective.

"Search the second safe in Grant's study."

Detective Monroe looked uncertain.

Grant smiled.

"You'll need a warrant."

Arthur pulled out his phone.

"I also recorded my son admitting that the safe contains material which could destroy this family."

Grant's jaw tightened.

Mara leaned toward me.

"Arthur just bought us time."

The night turned chaotic.

Guests crowded the windows.

Police radios crackled.

Grant's attorneys appeared seemingly from nowhere.

Within twenty minutes, the party was over.

But no one arrested Grant.

Not yet.

Mara was taken for questioning.

I refused to leave with Grant.

Arthur drove me to a private hotel.

For the first time in three years, I slept behind a door Grant couldn't open.

Or tried to.

At 4:10 a.m., someone knocked.

I sat upright.

"Who?"

"Arthur."

I opened the door.

He looked exhausted.

"You need to see something."

On the desk, he placed a tablet.

A news alert filled the screen.

FEDERAL AGENT INVESTIGATED IN FATHER'S COLD CASE.

Mara's face appeared beneath the headline.

"This is Grant," I said.

Arthur nodded.

"He controls two people inside the state police."

"How do you know?"

"Because I introduced them."

The words hurt.

Arthur sat down.

"I wasn't innocent, Claire."

"I never thought you were."

"I spent thirty years building Whitaker Development."

"I know."

"What you don't know is how we built it."

Bribery.

Threats.

Political favors.

Arthur didn't hide it.

But he insisted Grant had taken things farther.

After Arthur retired, Grant transformed corruption into something resembling intelligence operations.

He tracked employees.

Politicians.

Mistresses.

Witnesses.

Anyone who could threaten him.

"And Michael Voss?" I asked.

Arthur looked away.

"He was Grant's security consultant."

"Mara's father."

"Yes."

"Is he dead?"

Arthur didn't answer immediately.

"That's complicated."

"Arthur."

"He disappeared after discovering Grant's tracking program."

"Mara thinks Grant killed him."

"Maybe he tried."

"What does that mean?"

Arthur opened another file.

A photograph.

Michael Voss.

Older than Mara.

Same eyes.

The picture was dated four months ago.

I stared.

"He is alive."

"Apparently."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Mara spent six years believing her father was dead."

Arthur nodded.

"Grant knows he's alive."

"Then why frame Mara for killing him?"

"Because a murder charge keeps her away from you."

The logic was terrifyingly clean.

Everything Grant did created isolation.

Remove Mara.

Discredit me.

Control Arthur.

He didn't need to kill anyone if he could convince the world they were dangerous.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Arthur and I looked at each other.

I answered.

"Hello?"

A man's voice.

"Claire Whitaker?"

"Yes."

"My name is Michael Voss."

I couldn't speak.

"I believe you're with Arthur."

Arthur stood.

Michael continued.

"Don't tell anyone where you are."

"Your daughter—"

"I know."

"She's been arrested."

"I know."

"Then come forward."

Silence.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because Grant doesn't know what I have."

"What do you have?"

"The original files."

My pulse accelerated.

"What files?"

"Evidence tying Grant's surveillance network to judges, contractors, police officers, and two federal employees."

"Where are you?"

"I'll tell you when it's safe."

"When will that be?"

"Never."

Then he said something unexpected.

"Check your left shoe."

The call ended.

I stared at my feet.

I was wearing the same heels from the fundraiser.

I removed the left shoe.

Something had been taped beneath the insole.

A microSD card.

Arthur stared.

"How did that get there?"

"I don't know."

I held it up.

A tiny handwritten label read:

My distress fob number.

We inserted the card into Arthur's laptop.

One video file appeared.

I clicked.

Grant filled the screen.

The recording came from somewhere inside his study.

He was speaking to Evelyn.

"If Claire ever figures it out," Grant said, "Mara takes the fall."

Evelyn responded.

"And Arthur?"

Grant smiled.

"He won't survive the shock."

Arthur stopped the video.

His face had gone gray.

"What?"

I asked.

He pointed toward the corner of the screen.

A mirror reflected part of the room.

Someone else was standing behind the camera.

We enlarged the image.

May you like

Arthur whispered one name.

"Rosa."
