Chapter 6 - The Son They Came For

Damien was already moving before the phone left his hand.

“Where is she?” Frank asked.

“Medical suite.”

Marco checked the security feed.

His face changed.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“The cameras went down nine minutes ago.”

Victoria went pale.

“My father.”

Damien looked at her.

“You said the agreement required a child.”

“I didn’t know whose.”

Damien felt something click into place.

Jackie.

Toby.

The clinic payments.

The desperate effort to keep the boy hidden.

“Why Toby?”

Victoria shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Damien called Sophie again.

No answer.

They reached the medical building in seventeen minutes.

The private suite had been destroyed.

One guard was unconscious.

A nurse cried beside the hallway wall.

Sophie was found in Toby’s room.

Blood on her forehead.

Barefoot.

Wild-eyed.

She grabbed Damien’s coat.

“They took him.”

“Who?”

“Three men.”

“Did they say anything?”

“One called him the heir.”

Damien froze.

Victoria whispered, “Oh God.”

Damien turned.

“What?”

She looked terrified.

“My father once told me your father made one mistake.”

“What?”

“He trusted blood more than business.”

Damien looked at Sophie.

“Jackie’s last name was Davis.”

“Yes.”

“What was his real name?”

Sophie stared.

“I don’t know.”

“Think.”

“He never talked about his father.”

Damien grabbed the old photograph from Sophie’s bag.

Jackie’s face.

There had always been something familiar.

Not enough to notice before.

But now Damien saw it.

The eyes.

His father’s eyes.

Carlo.

Damien called him.

No answer.

They drove back to the estate.

Carlo was gone.

His room had been emptied.

Frank entered Damien’s office holding an old personnel file.

“Found this in your father’s archive.”

Damien opened it.

Jackie Davis.

Original name: Giacomo Russo.

Damien stopped breathing.

Father: Salvatore Russo.

Mother: Elena Davis.

Sophie covered her mouth.

Damien read it again.

Jackie had been his half brother.

Toby was his nephew.

Not just a maid’s sick child.

Russo blood.

Frank whispered, “That’s why Jackie was dangerous.”

Damien stared at him.

“My father killed his own son.”

“No.”

Damien looked up.

Frank shook his head.

“Your father never ordered Jackie killed.”

“You said he did.”

“I lied.”

Damien crossed the room so fast Frank barely moved.

Damien slammed him into the wall.

“Why?”

“Because Carlo was still inside your house.”

“You let me kill my brother.”

Frank’s face twisted.

“I tried to stop it.”

“How?”

“I told Salvatore Jackie was innocent. Salvatore ordered Jackie moved out of the city.”

“But he died.”

“Carlo changed the order.”

Damien’s hand tightened.

“And you said nothing.”

“I thought telling you would get you killed too.”

Damien released him.

Disgust replaced rage.

Every man had hidden truth in the name of protection.

And every secret had created another grave.

Marco interrupted.

“I found Carlo.”

A location appeared on the screen.

Old Russo shipping terminal.

Pier 17.

The same location on Jackie’s paper.

They drove there before sunrise.

The terminal had been abandoned for years.

Damien entered alone despite Frank’s protests.

Inside, Carlo stood beside Antonio Calabresi.

Toby sat in a chair between them.

An oxygen tank beside him.

He was frightened but conscious.

Sophie tried to follow Damien.

He stopped her.

“Stay behind me.”

Antonio smiled.

“I was wondering when you’d learn who the boy was.”

Damien looked at Carlo.

“You killed my father.”

Carlo’s eyes lowered.

“Yes.”

“You changed Jackie’s order.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe I killed him because he was a thief.”

Carlo’s voice broke.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t.”

Antonio laughed.

“This family has always been sentimental.”

Damien’s gaze shifted to him.

“What do you want?”

“The original voting rights.”

“You already lost the marriage.”

“There are other methods.”

“Toby.”

Antonio smiled.

“The surviving male descendant of Salvatore Russo.”

Damien understood.

If Damien died, Toby inherited bloodline-controlled assets held in trust.

Antonio could manipulate a sick child.

Or Sophie.

“You planned this.”

“For years.”

“Jackie discovered it.”

“Yes.”

“And that’s why he died.”

Carlo closed his eyes.

Antonio continued.

“Your father was becoming weak. Jackie was becoming curious. You were predictable.”

Damien stared at Carlo.

“Why?”

His uncle looked at Toby.

“I thought Antonio would protect the family.”

“He used you.”

“I know.”

“You poisoned your own brother.”

Carlo’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Antonio became impatient.

“Enough.”

He gestured toward Toby.

“Sign the transfer.”

A document waited on a table.

Damien walked toward it.

Sophie whispered, “Don’t.”

Damien looked at Toby.

The little boy struggled to breathe.

He picked up the pen.

Antonio smiled.

Then Damien said, “Marco.”

The warehouse lights went out.

Gunfire exploded from the far entrance.

Frank’s men moved in.

Sophie crawled toward Toby.

Damien drove Antonio into the table.

The document tore.

Carlo stood frozen.

Antonio reached for a weapon.

Carlo moved first.

He knocked Antonio’s arm aside.

The shot struck the ceiling.

Damien disarmed him.

Frank’s men surrounded them.

Antonio shouted, “You think this ends anything?”

Damien looked at him.

“It ends you.”

Sirens approached.

Not Russo sirens.

Police.

Federal vehicles.

Victoria entered from the loading dock holding a phone.

Damien stared.

She said, “I sent them everything.”

Antonio’s face collapsed.

“You.”

Victoria looked at her father.

“No more.”

By sunrise, Antonio Calabresi was in federal custody.

Carlo surrendered.

Frank gave testimony.

Victoria handed over every document she possessed.

Toby returned to Sophie.

Damien should have felt victory.

Instead, he felt hollow.

Because one question remained.

Who had actually pulled the trigger on Jackie?

Carlo asked to speak with Damien before being taken away.

Damien approached.

Carlo whispered, “Jackie survived the basement.”

Damien stopped.

“What?”

“You didn’t kill him.”

Damien stared at him.

Carlo leaned closer.

“I did.”

Then he said something else.

May you like

Something Damien had not expected.

“But Jackie left one final message for you.”
