Chapter 5 - The Music Box

We returned to the mansion just before midnight.

The front door was open.

One security guard lay unconscious near the foyer.

Alive.

My brothers moved through the house.

I ran upstairs.

"Elena!" Marco shouted.

I ignored him.

My childhood belongings were stored in a room at the end of the west wing.

The door had been forced.

Boxes covered the floor.

Photographs.

Books.

Old dresses.

My father's letters.

Someone had searched everything.

I found the box that had contained the music box.

Empty.

My heart sank.

Then I remembered something else.

At twenty-six, shortly after marrying Damian, I had almost thrown the music box away.

Our housekeeper, Rosa, stopped me.

"Beautiful things shouldn't be discarded because they remind us of painful people," she'd said.

She took it downstairs.

I found Rosa in the kitchen.

She had hidden there during the chaos.

"Mrs. Cole?"

"The music box."

Her eyes widened.

"The silver one?"

"Where is it?"

"In the nursery."

I froze.

"What nursery?"

Rosa looked confused.

"The room you prepared years ago."

Pain hit me.

Three years earlier, I had been pregnant.

Eleven weeks.

Then I miscarried.

Damian and I closed the nursery and never entered again.

Rosa had apparently placed the music box there because she couldn't bear to throw it away.

I climbed the stairs more slowly this time.

Damian followed.

"Don't."

I turned.

"What?"

"Don't come in."

He stopped.

For once, he obeyed.

I entered alone.

The room still had pale wallpaper.

A wooden crib remained covered with a sheet.

On the shelf sat the silver music box.

Untouched.

I picked it up.

My father had given it to me twenty-three years earlier.

A ballerina turned when I opened the lid.

The melody began.

I remembered sitting on my father's knee.

Some songs protect families.

I examined the box.

Nothing.

Then I removed the velvet lining.

Underneath was a tiny brass key.

Marco entered.

"That's it."

"To what?"

"I don't know."

A number was engraved on the key.

Luca searched online.

"Safe-deposit box."

The bank had closed years ago.

Its records had been acquired by another institution.

Aaron Pierce made calls.

At 1:40 a.m., he found the answer.

Box 317 had been transferred to a private vault facility owned by Romano Holdings.

Marco stared.

"Our own building."

"Who has access?" I asked.

He looked uncomfortable.

"All five brothers."

"And me?"

"No."

I laughed.

"So Dad left me the key to a vault I can't enter?"

"Unless one of us takes you."

My mother's warning returned.

Don't trust your brothers.

Maybe the message wasn't saying all of them would betray me.

Maybe it meant I needed one of them.

But which one?

At dawn, we drove to the vault.

I chose Marco.

If he betrayed me, at least I would finally know.

The key opened Box 317.

Inside was no ledger.

There was a letter.

Elena,

If you're reading this, then someone has discovered the truth.

Trust evidence, not blood.

Not even mine.

Dad.

Underneath was a memory card.

We inserted it into a secure laptop.

My father appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

"Elena, I hoped you'd never watch this."

I held my breath.

He explained everything.

The ledger wasn't one book.

It was a digital archive.

Copies had been divided.

No single person could access them.

The memory card contained instructions.

But first, my father revealed the truth about Patricia.

She had worked with his enemies for decades.

She had married into the Cole family specifically to build financial channels through legitimate businesses.

Damian had been raised inside her plan without understanding its full scope.

Then my father said something unexpected.

"Damian Cole is not responsible for the sins of his mother. Judge him only by the choices he makes himself."

I almost laughed.

Damian had made his choices.

And I would judge them.

The final instructions led to a secure server.

Aaron contacted federal investigators.

Marco's attorneys began preparing evidence.

By afternoon, the scale became clear.

Fraud.

Money laundering.

Extortion.

Bribery.

Patricia's network stretched across three states.

My forged documents were only one piece.

The humiliation at my birthday had been designed to emotionally destabilize me before presenting papers that would transfer my shares.

If I refused, Damian's debt would be used to force him further.

And if something happened to me, the insurance money would flow into North Vale and then disappear through shell companies.

Gabriel had been used as the perfect legal cover.

The five brothers looked at him differently now.

He looked at me.

"I should have called harder."

"You should have come to my door."

"I know."

It wasn't forgiveness.

But it was the beginning of truth.

Damian spent the day sitting alone in the library.

At sunset, he asked to speak with me.

Marco objected.

I went anyway.

Damian stood when I entered.

"I've given Aaron everything."

"Everything?"

"Accounts. Messages. Names. Passwords."

"Why?"

He looked at me.

"Because I can't undo what I did."

"No."

"I know."

He swallowed.

"I loved you, Elena."

"Maybe."

His eyes filled.

"But love doesn't matter when you choose cruelty."

He nodded.

"I know that now."

I took off my wedding ring.

Placed it on the table.

His face collapsed.

"I'm filing for divorce."

He didn't argue.

"I'm also cooperating with the investigation."

"I know."

"And what happened tonight..."

His voice failed.

"I'll tell them the truth."

I turned toward the door.

"Elena."

I stopped.

"I'm sorry."

I didn't say I forgave him.

Because I didn't.

But I believed he was sorry.

Sometimes those are different things.

I opened the door.

Marco stood outside.

His phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"What?"

He looked at me.

"The federal team went to arrest Patricia."

"And?"

"She's gone."

My phone vibrated.

A photograph arrived.

It showed my five brothers entering the vault facility that morning.

Taken from across the street.

Then another photograph.

Me leaving.

Underneath was one sentence.

YOU FOUND YOUR FATHER'S SECRET. NOW I'M COMING FOR YOURS.

I stared at the message.

"What secret?"

Marco's face changed.

I knew immediately.

There was still something he hadn't told me.

He reached into his coat and removed an old hospital bracelet.

My name was printed on it.

Beside my name was another word.

BABY.

May you like

Then Marco whispered:

"Elena, your miscarriage wasn't what you were told."
