Chapter 5 - The Brother Who Wasn't Dead

The man stepped into the light.
Evelyn understood immediately why Rebecca had made the mistake.
Gabriel Reyes and Daniel were nearly identical.
Same height.
Same eyes.
Same shape of jaw.
But Gabriel carried himself differently.
Daniel's stillness came from discipline.
Gabriel's came from certainty.
He knew nobody in the room would shoot him immediately.
He smiled.
"Hello, Daniel."
Daniel stared at his brother.
"You were supposed to be in Argentina."
Gabriel shrugged.
"You were supposed to be dead."
Cole moved subtly toward Gabriel's flank.
Gabriel noticed.
"Captain Cole, don't."
Cole stopped.
"How do you know my name?"
"I know everyone's name."
Evelyn nodded toward the scratched drive.
"Is that real?"
"Yes."
"Why bring it here?"
Gabriel looked at Rebecca.
"Because she finally escaped."
Rebecca's voice turned cold.
"You worked for Gray."
"Once."
"You took the drive."
"To keep him from getting it."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You expect us to believe that?"
"No."
Gabriel pulled out a chair.
"I expect Evelyn to verify it."
He pushed the drive toward her.
"There's a laptop in the back room that isn't connected to any network."
Daniel grabbed his brother's wrist.
"Before anyone plugs anything in, you're telling us where you've been."
Gabriel looked down at his hand.
"Take your hand off me."
"Try making me."
For a moment the brothers looked ready to fight.
Evelyn intervened.
"Enough."
Daniel released him.
Gabriel sat.
"Nine years ago, I began working for a private intelligence contractor called Meridian Strategic."
Hale's expression changed.
"I know them."
"You should. Gray helped create them."
Gabriel explained.
Meridian specialized in deniable intelligence operations.
Officially it consulted governments.
Unofficially it traded access.
Information.
Political leverage.
Operational outcomes.
Gabriel discovered what it really was too late.
"When Rebecca found evidence, Gray ordered her removed."
Rebecca stared at him.
"You were on the team."
"Yes."
"You kidnapped me."
Gabriel lowered his eyes.
"Yes."
Daniel stepped forward.
Evelyn stopped him with one hand.
Rebecca's voice shook.
"You kept me imprisoned."
"I helped capture you. I didn't know where they held you afterward."
"That distinction matters to you?"
"No."
Gabriel looked at her.
"It shouldn't."
For the first time, his confidence cracked.
"I've spent four years trying to undo it."
He pointed toward the drive.
"That's why I took the evidence."
Evelyn carried it into the back room.
Daniel followed.
They found the laptop.
Air-gapped.
Clean.
Evelyn inserted the drive.
A password prompt appeared.
Rebecca entered a sequence.
Files filled the screen.
Payment records.
Operation schedules.
Names.
Photographs.
Messages.
Cole stared.
"This could bring down half a dozen careers."
Hale corrected him.
"More."
Rebecca opened one folder.
Inside were eleven operation names.
Each one corresponded to a failed or compromised American mission.
Lantern appeared fourth.
Evelyn opened it.
A route map.
The same convoy route used by the twelve Americans.
A message from Gray:
ROUTE CONFIRMED. LOCAL PARTNER NOTIFIED.
Evelyn's face hardened.
He had sold them.
Another message appeared.
SUBJECT SLOAN MAY BE PRESENT. DO NOT RECOVER.
Hale looked ill.
"This proves everything."
Gabriel shook his head.
"It proves Gray authorized compromises. It doesn't prove who controls Meridian."
Evelyn looked at him.
"Gray doesn't?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Gabriel hesitated.
"That's what I've been trying to find."
The laptop beeped.
A hidden directory appeared.
Rebecca leaned closer.
"I've never seen that."
Gabriel frowned.
"Neither have I."
The folder was labeled:
CROWN.
Password protected.
Rebecca tried her key.
Rejected.
Daniel tried an old Meridian sequence Gabriel provided.
Rejected.
Evelyn looked at the screen.
"What does Crown mean?"
Gabriel didn't answer.
"What?"
He swallowed.
"When I worked for Meridian, nobody used real names for senior leadership."
"And?"
"The person above Gray had one designation."
Evelyn already knew.
"Crown."
Gabriel nodded.
The implications were enormous.
Gray wasn't the top.
Somebody more powerful had directed everything.
Hale leaned against the table.
"We take this to military investigators now."
Rebecca laughed.
"No."
Hale looked at her.
"If Crown has access high enough to manipulate operations, we don't know which investigators are compromised."
"Then who do we trust?" Cole asked.
Evelyn looked around the room.
Nobody answered.
The scratched drive suddenly emitted a tone.
Gabriel stood.
"That's not good."
A countdown appeared.
00:04:59.
Daniel's face changed.
"What did you do?"
"Nothing."
Rebecca stared.
"The drive has a remote destruction trigger."
Gabriel shook his head.
"It can't. It's offline."
Evelyn understood.
"Not remote."
Gabriel looked at her.
"Timed."
Someone had expected them to open it.
Four minutes remained.
"Can you copy the data?"
Daniel began moving.
"Maybe."
He connected a second device.
Transfer started.
12%.
Three minutes.
Cole watched the windows.
"Cars."
Everyone turned.
Headlights appeared outside.
Multiple vehicles.
Gabriel cursed.
"Gray."
Evelyn looked at the transfer.
26%.
"How long?"
"Too long."
Hale opened a side cabinet Daniel had stocked.
Inside were emergency radios and equipment.
Cole picked one up.
"No outside help?"
Evelyn shook her head.
"Not until we know who Crown is."
Gunshots shattered the front windows.
Everyone dropped.
Daniel kept the transfer running.
37%.
Gabriel returned fire from behind the counter.
Rebecca crawled toward the kitchen.
Evelyn moved beside her.
"Stay down."
"Been doing that for three years."
Evelyn handed her a sidearm.
"Then don't anymore."
Rebecca looked at it.
Then smiled grimly.
Gunfire continued.
Hale covered the rear door.
Cole moved toward the windows.
Daniel shouted:
"Sixty percent!"
Smoke entered the diner.
Gabriel yelled:
"They're flanking us!"
Evelyn saw movement along the side wall.
"Kitchen exit!"
"No!" Daniel shouted. "Transfer!"
"Bring it."
He unplugged the laptop from power and carried it.
They moved through the kitchen.
Outside, an old delivery van sat behind the building.
Daniel opened it.
"Seriously?" Cole asked.
Daniel threw him the keys.
"You wanted luxury?"
They piled inside.
Cole drove.
Bullets struck the rear door.
The laptop showed 82%.
Evelyn watched.
91%.
95%.
The scratched drive began flashing red.
98%.
99%.
Then—
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Daniel ripped it free and threw the original drive out the window.
Seconds later, it sparked and melted internally.
The copy remained.
Cole drove them onto the highway.
For several minutes nobody spoke.
Then Hale's secure phone rang.
He answered cautiously.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Evelyn looked at him.
Hale turned on speaker.
Colonel Pierce's voice filled the van.
"General, we've got a situation at Fort Ashford."
"What situation?"
"Captain Cole and Major Hart have been listed as armed fugitives."
Cole nearly drove off the road.
"I'm what?"
Pierce continued.
"Orders went command-wide eleven minutes ago."
"From whom?"
A pause.
"The Secretary's office."
Hale frowned.
"Secretary of Defense?"
"No, sir."
Pierce sounded frightened.
"Secretary of the Army."
Evelyn looked around the van.
Someone very high had moved against them.
Hale asked:
"Who signed the order?"
Pierce answered.
"Secretary Jonathan Mercer."
Rebecca made a sound.
Everyone looked at her.
Evelyn asked:
"You know him?"
Rebecca's face had gone white.
"Mercer isn't Crown."
Hale frowned.
"Then why would he issue the order?"
"Because he's scared of Crown."
The laptop suddenly chimed.
Daniel looked down.
The transfer had recovered part of the encrypted CROWN directory.
One photograph opened automatically.
Everyone stared.
A man stood beside Gray and Mercer at a private meeting.
Evelyn recognized him immediately.
So did Hale.
Cole whispered:
"No."
The photograph showed someone who had been inside the briefing room that morning.
Someone who had watched Captain Cole humiliate Evelyn.
Someone who had known exactly who she was.
Colonel Warren Pierce.
Then Daniel enlarged the photograph.
Behind Pierce was a handwritten note.
One sentence.
HART MUST NEVER REMEMBER WHO GAVE THE ORDER.
Evelyn stared at the words.
"What order?"
Rebecca turned slowly toward her.
"The order you gave during Lantern."
Evelyn froze.
"I didn't give any order."
May you like
Rebecca looked terrified.
"That's what they made you believe..."
