Chapter 5 - A Desk on the Executive Floor

Alexander moved Emily's family into a company-owned apartment with private security.
Emily resisted until Noah asked one question.
“What happens if they come back?”
She agreed.
At work, Alexander moved Emily to the executive floor.
The gossip became vicious.
People assumed favoritism.
Some assumed romance.
Emily hated both explanations because neither acknowledged her work.
So she worked harder.
She traced Northbridge payments.
She found shell vendors.
She discovered signatures that appeared impossible.
One belonged to a dead accountant.
Another belonged to Daniel.
Dated six months after his death.
“Someone forged Dad's signature.”
Alexander examined it.
“They used him as a ghost contractor.”
“To hide theft.”
“Yes.”
The trail led toward Charles Whitmore.
But never directly.
Charles was too careful.
When Alexander confronted him about Northbridge, Charles smiled.
“You're chasing accounting errors from fifteen years ago.”
“Daniel Carter died investigating them.”
Charles's smile vanished for half a second.
Then returned.
“Who told you that?”
Alexander didn't answer.
Charles leaned back.
“Be careful with Emily.”
“Why?”
“Desperate people are convincing.”
Alexander stood.
“She's the only person in this building who showed me evidence before asking me to believe her.”
That evening Emily found a discrepancy in Charles's travel records.
He had claimed to be in London the night Daniel died.
Corporate aircraft logs showed his plane never left New York.
Emily called Alexander.
No answer.
She tried again.
Nothing.
Then she received a text.
From Alexander's number.
COME TO ARCHIVE ROOM B. FOUND THE LEDGER.
Emily's heart jumped.
She took the elevator down.
Archive Room B was dark.
“Alexander?”
No response.
She stepped inside.
The door closed behind her.
Her phone lost signal.
A light clicked on.
Vanessa stood beside a table.
“You shouldn't have come.”
Emily backed toward the door.
“You sent the message.”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Vanessa looked terrified.
“I came because I got one too.”
Emily's anger disappeared.
“What did yours say?”
Vanessa showed her phone.
WE KNOW WHAT YOU TOLD ALEXANDER.
A noise came from behind the shelving.
Both women turned.
Someone else was inside the archive.
A file dropped to the floor.
Then a man's voice spoke from the darkness.
“Emily Carter?”
She recognized the voice.

Martin Hale stepped into the light.
And in his hands was the black metal case from her father's photograph.
