Chapter 6 - The Mistress Who Was Never His

Emergency lighting turned the police operations center red.
Mara was already moving.
"Lock the exits!"
Alarms sounded.
Officers rushed through corridors.
Lucas grabbed the metal case.
Mara stopped him.
"No. Leave it."
"The files—"
"If Tessa wants the key, she'll expect us to protect the case."
Lucas understood.
They placed it inside a locked office and moved toward the stairwell.
Daniel found Mara near the elevators.
"What's happening?"
"Tessa escaped."
"The mistress?"
"She's not what we thought."
"Of course she isn't."
Mara almost smiled despite herself.
"Stay with Mom."
"Again?"
"Especially now."
Daniel looked offended.
Then nodded.
Mara and Lucas entered the stairwell.
A door slammed below.
They descended.
At the parking level, police found Tessa's burgundy dress discarded beside a maintenance closet.
Inside the closet, a uniform was missing.
Mara picked up the dress.
"She planned this."
Lucas nodded.
"From the beginning."
"You knew she was Elena's handler?"
"No."
"Elena did?"
"I don't know."
They found Elena under guard in another wing.
She looked genuinely shocked when Mara told her.
"Tessa?"
"Dominic says she's your handler."
"I never had a handler named Tessa."
"Maybe another name."
Elena stared.
Then whispered, "Rachel."
Lucas stiffened.
Mara noticed.
"Who is Rachel?"
"Rachel Kerr."
Elena stood.
"She recruited me into Hart's network."
"When?"
"Fourteen years ago."
"Before you knew about me?"
"Yes."
"Describe her."
Elena did.
Same height.
Same eyes.
Different hair.
Older photograph.
But unmistakable.
Tessa.
Mara sat down.
"So Hart put her near Dominic."
Elena shook her head slowly.
"No."
"What?"
"Rachel hated Hart."
"Then why?"
"Because she believed White Raven belonged to her family."
Mara stared.
"Her family?"
Elena looked at Lucas.
"You never told her?"
Lucas closed his eyes.
Another secret.
Mara laughed without humor.
"Go ahead. Surprise me."
Lucas said, "Rachel Kerr is General Hart's daughter."
Silence.
Mara blinked.
"His daughter."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you mention this before?"
"Because I thought she was dead."
"Naturally."
Elena sat.
"Hart told everyone Rachel died in Europe."
"When?"
"Eight years ago."
Mara looked toward the dark hallway.
"Apparently death is very temporary in your social circle."
Lucas almost smiled.
Then his expression hardened.
"If Rachel has the key, she's going to Fort Meade."
"She can't just walk into Fort Meade."
"She doesn't need to."
"Why?"
"The key can access the ledger remotely from one secure terminal."
"Where?"
Lucas hesitated.
Mara immediately knew.
"The cabin."
He nodded.
"The Montana cabin?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"White Raven's original field site had a satellite uplink."
Mara stared at him.
"The cabin was part of White Raven."
"Before it became private property."
Suddenly everything fit differently.
Hart had not chosen a random isolated place.
He had sent her back to the beginning.
Mara remembered the loose floorboard.
Emergency pack.
Paper map.
The hidden equipment she'd found.
Someone had prepared that cabin long before Dominic arrived.
"Who placed the survival pack?"
Lucas looked at Elena.
Elena answered.
"I did."
Mara turned.
"When?"
"Two weeks before your trip."
"You knew I was going?"
"I intercepted Hart's communication."
"Why not tell me?"
"I couldn't make direct contact."
Mara exhaled sharply.
"But you could hide food under the floor."
"Yes."
"That pack saved my life."
"I know."
For the first time, Mara looked at her sister without anger.
Not trust.
Not yet.
But something closer.
"Thank you."
Elena nodded.
Mara turned to Lucas.
"If Rachel reaches the cabin?"
"She can unlock the ledger."
"And then?"
"Transfer the funds."
"Two hundred forty million dollars."
"Some of it."
"To where?"
"Unknown."
Mara shook her head.
"This isn't about money."
Lucas looked at her.
"Why not?"
"Because Rachel worked Dominic. Hart worked Dominic. Elena was manipulated. I was targeted. Dad was killed. Nobody does all that just to steal money they could have stolen years ago."
Elena frowned.
"What else is in the ledger?"
Lucas's expression changed.
Mara saw it.
"There it is."
He hesitated.
"Names."
"What names?"
"Every White Raven identity."
"Current operatives?"
"Some."
"Former?"
"Yes."
"Government?"
"Multiple governments."
Mara understood.
The ledger wasn't money.
It was leverage.
Enough identities to blackmail agencies, expose operations and ruin lives across continents.
Rachel could sell it.
Or burn everyone connected to the program.
Mara looked at Cole, who had just entered.
"We're going back to Montana."
Cole nodded.
"I'll arrange transport."
Twelve hours later, a military aircraft carried Mara, Lucas, Elena and a federal tactical team west.
Mara sat across from her sister.
Neither spoke for the first hour.
Finally Elena said, "Did you really teach Special Forces survival?"
Mara looked at her.
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Nine years."
Elena smiled faintly.
"I knew Hart underestimated you."
"He didn't."
"What?"
"He knew exactly what I could survive."
"Then why leave you in the cabin?"
Mara had been wondering the same thing.
"Maybe survival was part of the plan."
Lucas looked up.
"What do you mean?"
"Hart knew the cabin had resources."
"He didn't know Elena stocked it."
"No. But he knew the structure."
Mara leaned forward.
"What if he didn't need me dead immediately?"
Elena frowned.
"Then why the funeral?"
"Legal death. Identity transfer. Pressure."
Lucas understood.
"And if you survived?"
"He'd know exactly where you'd go."
"The funeral."
"Yes."
Mara looked out the aircraft window.
"Hart designed a situation where every outcome helped him."
Lucas shook his head.
"Except Rachel."
"Exactly."
By the time they landed near Bozeman, a new snowstorm had begun.
Mara almost laughed.
The mountains wanted another round.
They drove north in armored vehicles until roads became impassable.
Then snowmobiles.
The cabin appeared just before midnight.
Dark.
Silent.
Exactly as Mara remembered.
Her body reacted before her mind.
Cold.
Isolation.
The generator dying.
Dominic's tire tracks disappearing.
She forced the memories down.
Elena touched her shoulder.
"You okay?"
"Yes."
It was a lie.
But useful ones still existed.
The tactical team surrounded the cabin.
No movement.
Thermal imaging detected one person inside.
Mara approached with Lucas and Elena.
The front door stood unlocked.
Inside, a fire burned.
Rachel sat at the kitchen table.
No weapon visible.
A laptop glowed in front of her.
Beside it rested the missing hardware key.
"You took your time," Rachel said.
Mara entered.
"Step away from the computer."
Rachel smiled.
"You survived beautifully."
"Step away."
"Do you know why Hart chose this cabin?"
"I have theories."
"Because this is where your father created White Raven."
Mara stared.
Rachel continued.
"And where he destroyed my family."
Lucas raised his weapon.
"Hands visible."
Rachel ignored him.
"My father wasn't always a monster."
"Most monsters aren't."
"He trusted Thomas Voss."
Mara said nothing.
"Your father built the ledger. My father protected it. Then Thomas decided White Raven had gone too far."
"And?"
"He tried to expose it."
Mara frowned.
"That doesn't match what I've heard."
"Because Lucas only has half the file."
Lucas stiffened.
Rachel touched the laptop.
"Want the other half?"
"Move your hand."
Rachel lifted both hands.
"Fine."
Mara approached.
On the screen was a video file.
THOMAS_VOSS_FINAL.
Her heart stopped.
"Dad?"
Rachel nodded.
"He recorded it the night he died."
Mara stared at the play button.
Everything in her wanted to press it.
Training said secure the threat first.
"Stand up."
Rachel complied.
Elena moved behind her and searched her.
No weapon.
Mara took the chair.
Lucas said, "Don't."
"Why?"
"It could be malware."
Rachel laughed softly.
"Still paranoid, Lucas."
"Still alive."
Mara looked at the screen.
"Can we isolate it?"
Lucas connected a secure device.
Thirty seconds.
Then:
"Clean."
Mara pressed play.
Her father appeared.
Older.
Tired.
Alive.
"Mara," he said.
Her throat closed.
"If you're watching this, then Benjamin failed to bury the past."
Mara gripped the table.
Thomas continued.
"I made choices I cannot defend. White Raven was meant to save compromised people. Instead, it became a machine for stealing lives."
He looked directly into the camera.
"And there is one truth your mother never knew."
Evelyn.
Mara leaned closer.
Thomas said, "Elena was not taken from us by Hart."
Elena froze.
Mara's pulse hammered.
"I gave her away."
Elena stepped backward.
"No."
Thomas's recording continued.
"I believed separating my daughters would protect at least one of them."
Elena whispered, "No."
"But I was wrong."
Mara looked at her sister.
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
Thomas leaned toward the camera.
"If Elena ever sees this, tell her I was a coward."
The video flickered.
Then Thomas said something that changed everything.
"Benjamin Hart did not kill me."
Rachel's smile disappeared.
Mara stared at the screen.
"The person who poisoned me was someone I trusted even more."
The recording paused automatically.
A password prompt appeared.
Mara turned toward Rachel.
"What's the password?"
Rachel shook her head.
"I don't know."
A sound came from outside.
One sharp gunshot.
Then another.
The cabin lights died.
Lucas moved toward the window.
Mara drew her weapon.
Elena whispered, "Who followed us?"
A voice came through the darkness behind them.
"Your husband did."
Mara turned.
May you like
Dominic stood in the open basement doorway.
He was holding a gun.
