Chapter 2 - The Deal Inside Suite 412

The first thing I learned about Adrian Vale was that he never looked surprised.
Not when he walked into a room full of enemies.
Not when someone pointed a weapon at him.
Not when people lied directly to his face.
But that morning, for just one second, I saw something different.
Confusion.
Because I had accidentally walked into his room.
And someone out there already knew.
I watched his eyes move across the phone screen again.
The message was still there.
"The woman in your bed is the reason your enemy found you."
I didn’t understand what it meant.
But Adrian did.
And that scared me more than the gun.
Because a man who wasn’t afraid of anything had just become very still.
"Who sent that?" I whispered.
He ignored me.
Instead, he looked toward the door.
Every part of his body changed.
The relaxed confidence disappeared.
The man standing in front of me was no longer someone who looked like he belonged on the cover of a magazine.
He looked like someone who had survived wars nobody knew about.
Someone who had learned that danger rarely announced itself.
It simply arrived.
"Get dressed," he said.
I blinked.
"What?"
"Get dressed."
I stared at him.
"I don't even know where my clothes are."
His eyes moved briefly toward the floor.
My black skirt.
My heels.
My jacket.
Then back to me.
For some reason, that small moment made the situation even more humiliating.
I was sitting in a stranger's bed.
Wearing a silk slip.
With Chicago's most dangerous man pointing a gun near me.
And somehow, I was embarrassed about my clothes.
"I swear I didn't know whose room this was," I said.
Adrian didn't answer.
He lowered the gun slightly.
Not enough for me to feel safe.
Just enough for me to breathe.
"Most people who enter this room without permission don't wake up."
My stomach dropped.
I looked at him.
"Are you threatening me?"
"No."
His voice was calm.
"I'm explaining why I don't believe in accidents."
I wanted to argue.
I wanted to tell him he was insane.
But then I remembered something.
The keycard.
The room number.
The mistake.
Everything suddenly felt ridiculous.
"I really did think this was 414."
Adrian watched me carefully.
"Why?"
"Because that's the room my company booked."
"Your company?"
"Yes."
"What company?"
I hesitated.
"Why does that matter?"
His expression hardened.
"Because someone just told me you might be connected to my enemy."
I felt cold.
"I don't know who your enemy is."
"Everyone says that."
"I'm not everyone."
For the first time, something changed in his eyes.
Not trust.
Not yet.
But interest.
Like he was trying to figure out what kind of person would talk to him that way.
A knock interrupted us.
Adrian immediately turned.
His entire body became alert.
"Stay here."
I almost laughed.
"Are you serious?"
He looked back at me.
"You have no idea how serious this is."
Then he walked toward the door.
Before opening it, he checked the security monitor beside the frame.
A man appeared on the screen.
Tall.
Dark suit.
Cold expression.
Adrian pressed a button.
"Who is it?"
"Marcus."
A pause.
Then Adrian opened the door.
The man entered quickly.
His eyes immediately found me.
His expression changed.
Not much.
But enough.
He was surprised.
"You brought her out?"
Adrian looked at him.
"Not yet."
Marcus glanced at the gun in Adrian's hand.
Then at me.
"Boss, we need to talk."
"Talk."
Marcus lowered his voice.
"The cameras on the fourth floor were disabled at 2:57 a.m."
Adrian's face remained emotionless.
"By who?"
"We don't know."
"That means you don't know enough."
Marcus swallowed.
"We checked the logs. Someone accessed the system using an employee override."
"Name."
"That's the problem."
Marcus looked at me.
"The override belonged to hotel staff."
I felt my heart tighten.
"What does that have to do with me?"
Neither man answered immediately.
And that silence told me more than words could.
"You think I was sent here?" I asked.
Adrian looked at me.
"I think someone wanted you here."
I shook my head.
"No."
My voice became louder.
"No, that doesn't make sense."
"Why?"
"Because I'm nobody."
The room went silent.
Adrian stared at me.
"You actually believe that?"
"Because it's true."
I laughed nervously.
"I'm not some spy. I'm not involved in whatever world you live in. I'm a person who organizes charity events and drinks too much coffee."
Marcus looked at Adrian.
"She doesn't seem like a plant."
Adrian didn't respond.
Because he knew something Marcus didn't.
People could pretend.
People could lie.
People could act innocent.
That was his world.
But I wasn't pretending.
I was terrified.
And somehow, that made everything worse.
Adrian walked toward the table and placed his gun down.
The movement should have made me feel better.
It didn't.
A man like him didn't need a weapon to be dangerous.
"Tell me everything about last night."
I frowned.
"I already did."
"Tell me again."
I sighed.
"Fine."
I explained everything.
The gala.
The coffee.
The elevator.
The keycard.
The room.
Every detail.
Adrian listened without interrupting.
When I finished, he asked one question.
"What was the name of the person who gave you the keycard?"
"Toby."
Marcus immediately looked at him.
Adrian noticed.
"What?"
Marcus hesitated.
"The night manager."
"Yes."
"I know him."
My eyebrows lifted.
"You know him?"
Marcus nodded slowly.
"Everyone who manages this hotel knows Adrian."
That wasn't what he meant.
I could tell.
"What aren't you telling me?"
Adrian looked away.
A dangerous silence filled the room.
Then Marcus spoke.
"Toby wasn't scheduled last night."
I froze.
"What?"
"He called in sick two days ago."
The room seemed to shrink.
"No."
Marcus continued.
"The person who gave you the keycard wasn't Toby."
My mouth went dry.
"Then who was it?"
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Or maybe because Adrian already had an idea.
He walked toward the table where my purse sat.
I hadn't even noticed he moved it.
He picked it up.
"Hey."
He ignored me.
He opened the bag.
I stood up immediately.
"What are you doing?"
"Checking something."
"You can't just go through my things."
His eyes met mine.
"Right now, I can."
I hated that he was right.
He searched carefully.
Not like someone looking for money.
Like someone looking for evidence.
Then he stopped.
His fingers touched something inside the side pocket.
A small envelope.
My heart sank.
"I don't know what that is."
Adrian looked at me.
"You don't?"
"No."
He pulled it out.
A plain white envelope.
No name.
No address.
Nothing.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Where did you get that?"
"I didn't."
Adrian opened it slowly.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of me.
Standing outside the hotel entrance.
From last night.
Before I entered suite 412.
My blood turned cold.
I looked at the picture.
Then at Adrian.
"I've never seen that before."
Adrian studied my face.
And I knew the exact moment he believed me.
Because his expression changed.
Not into kindness.
Not into comfort.
Into something much more dangerous.
Protection.
He turned the photograph over.
There was writing on the back.
Three words.
Three words that made Marcus step back.
Three words that made Adrian's jaw tighten.
Three words that proved I had not entered his room by accident.
"SHE WAS CHOSEN."
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A voice came through the speaker.
A woman's voice.
Calm.
Almost amused.
"Adrian."
His expression changed instantly.
Because he knew that voice.
The woman continued.
"You finally found her."
Adrian looked at me.
And whispered one name.
May you like
The name that made the entire room go silent.
"Victoria."
