Chapter 7 - The Man Behind The Locked Door

The whisper came from the other side.

My name.

Not a sound.

Not a mistake.

Someone had said it.

"Emma."

I froze.

Because the voice wasn’t familiar.

But the way it said my name was.

Like the person had known me for years.

Stefano stepped between me and the door.

"Move away."

I looked at him.

"Who is in there?"

He didn’t answer.

Again.

The silence.

The thing I had learned to hate.

I grabbed his arm.

"No."

He looked at me.

"No?"

"No more secrets."

The old phone vibrated again.

We all looked down.

Another message appeared.

You don’t know who you can trust.

My eyes moved from the phone to Stefano.

Then to Elena.

Then back to the locked door.

Because suddenly, I didn’t know if the message was a warning.

Or a threat.

Stefano slowly reached for the handle.

"Wait."

I stopped him.

"What?"

He looked at me.

"If this door opens, everything changes."

I almost laughed.

"Everything already changed."

He knew I was right.

Slowly, he unlocked the door.

The sound echoed through the hallway.

Click.

Click.

Click.

The door opened.

No one was standing there.

The room beyond was dark.

Empty.

At least, that was what I thought.

Then the light turned on.

Automatically.

And I saw him.

A man sitting in a chair.

Older.

Tired.

His hands resting on his knees.

His eyes fixed on me.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that face.

Not because I had met him.

Because I had seen him my entire life.

In photographs.

In old memories.

In the small pieces of my childhood my mother never explained.

My father.

I couldn’t move.

Neither could Stefano.

The man slowly stood.

His eyes filled with emotion.

"Emma."

My knees almost gave out.

I grabbed the wall.

"No."

The word came out before I could think.

Because accepting it felt impossible.

My father had left.

That was the story.

My father was gone.

My father was a painful memory.

Not a living person standing in front of me.

The man took a step forward.

"I know this is not how you should have found out."

I stared at him.

"Then how should I have found out?"

My voice broke.

"After another twenty years?"

His expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

"I wanted to come back."

"When?"

He looked down.

"I tried."

I laughed softly.

"People always say that."

He looked at me.

"I did."

"Then why didn't you?"

Silence.

A different kind.

Not hiding.

Painful.

"My mother told me you abandoned us."

His eyes closed.

"I know."

"Was she lying?"

He opened his eyes.

"No."

The answer shocked me.

"No?"

He nodded.

"Your mother never lied to you."

I didn’t understand.

"Then explain."

He looked toward Stefano.

"Tell her."

Stefano looked away.

And that made my anger return.

"Tell me what?"

My father took a breath.

"Your mother wanted me gone."

The words hit me.

"Why?"

"Because staying near you would put you in danger."

I shook my head.

"No."

My voice became louder.

"No, you don't get to say that."

I stepped closer.

"You don't get to disappear for twenty years and call it protection."

He accepted my anger.

Maybe he deserved it.

"I know."

That answer hurt more than an excuse would have.

Because he wasn’t fighting.

He wasn’t defending himself.

He was admitting it.

"I spent my whole life thinking I wasn't enough."

His face changed.

"Emma..."

"I thought you left because you didn't want me."

"No."

The word came quickly.

"I left because I loved you."

I looked away.

Because I didn’t want to believe him.

Believing him was harder.

Because anger was simple.

Love was complicated.

Elena quietly stepped into the room.

"My mother knew this day would come."

I looked at her.

"Your mother?"

Elena nodded.

"Your father and I helped her hide the evidence."

I turned.

"Evidence of what?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then my father walked toward the table.

On it was a large folder.

Old.

Worn.

He opened it.

Inside were documents.

Names.

Dates.

Photographs.

The same symbol appeared everywhere.

The symbol my mother hid.

The symbol connected everyone.

"This is why your mother was afraid."

I looked at the papers.

"What is it?"

My father looked at me.

"Proof."

"Proof of what?"

"That the people who ruined our family have been controlling things for years."

I frowned.

"Who?"

Stefano answered.

"Clara."

The name made the room feel colder.

The woman from the photograph.

The woman my mother trusted.

The woman who watched her.

"She's alive."

It wasn’t a question.

Stefano nodded.

"Yes."

"Where?"

Nobody knew.

Or nobody wanted to say.

My father picked up another photograph.

This one was newer.

Much newer.

Taken recently.

It showed a woman standing outside a building.

I recognized the place.

My childhood home.

My breath stopped.

"When was this taken?"

My father looked at the date.

"Three days ago."

Three days.

Before my birthday.

Before the wrong number.

Before Stefano walked into my life.

Someone had been watching my house.

Watching me.

I looked at the photograph.

"Why?"

My father’s expression changed.

"Because they knew your mother left something behind."

"What?"

He pointed toward the folder.

"Something they never found."

My eyes moved around the room.

The hidden documents.

The secret hallway.

The locked door.

"What?"

Stefano looked at the floor.

"Your mother didn't hide evidence."

I looked at him.

"Then what did she hide?"

He looked at me.

"Someone."

The word made no sense.

"Someone?"

My father stepped closer.

"Your mother spent twenty years protecting a person who could expose everything."

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

I looked at Elena.

Then Stefano.

Then my father.

"Who did my mother hide?"

The old phone vibrated.

Everyone froze.

Another message.

This time, it was from my mother's number.

A number that had been disconnected for six years.

I picked up the phone.

My hands were shaking.

The message contained only one sentence.

Emma, if you are reading this, it means they found him.

I looked at Stefano.

Then at my father.

Then at the room.

A second message appeared.

But you still don't know who he really is.

The lights suddenly went out.

And in the darkness, someone behind us whispered:

"Emma..."

May you like

A hand touched the door handle.

The hidden room door slowly began to open from the outside.
