Chapter 9 - The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For a moment…

nobody moved.

Not Arthur.

Not my mother.

Not Clara.

Not even Victor.

The entire warehouse seemed frozen in time.

Because the man standing behind Emily Carter was impossible.

A ghost.

A memory.

A person who should have existed only in old photographs and painful stories.

Arthur’s father.

Matteo Rossi.

The man who was supposed to have died fifteen years ago.

I looked at Arthur.

I had never seen him look like that.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Broken.

“Dad…”

The word barely left his mouth.

Matteo Rossi stared back at his son.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably him.

The same sharp eyes.

The same controlled expression.

The same presence that filled the room without effort.

Only now…

there was something darker.

Something empty.

Arthur slowly lowered his hand.

The security team around us didn’t know what to do.

Nobody had prepared for this.

Nobody had prepared for a dead man walking back into their lives.

“You’re alive.”

Arthur’s voice was quiet.

Matteo tilted his head slightly.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“I am.”

Arthur looked at him like he was trying to understand reality.

“You let everyone believe you were dead.”

“I had to.”

“Had to?”

Arthur laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“You let me bury you.”

The words hit harder than anything else.

Matteo didn’t react.

That made it worse.

“You let Isabella believe she lost her father.”

A pause.

“You let me spend years thinking I failed you.”

Something shifted in Matteo’s face.

A small crack.

Almost invisible.

But it was there.

“I was protecting you.”

Arthur stared at him.

“Everyone says that.”

His voice became colder.

“Everyone lies with the same excuse.”

I looked at Arthur.

And I understood.

Because he wasn’t only talking about his father.

He was talking about me.

About Clara.

About every person who had made decisions for someone else and called it protection.

Matteo looked at me.

And my entire body tensed.

Because I knew immediately.

He knew who I was.

“Lena.”

Hearing my name from his mouth felt wrong.

Like a stranger had walked into a memory that belonged only to me.

“You look like your mother.”

My mother stepped forward.

“Don’t.”

Her voice was filled with anger.

Real anger.

Not fear.

“Don’t speak to her like you have any right.”

Matteo looked at Emily.

And for the first time…

I saw emotion.

Regret.

“You’re still protecting her.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“After everything?”

“You know why I did what I did.”

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“I know why you convinced yourself you did what you did.”

Silence.

Arthur looked between them.

“Someone explain.”

Nobody answered.

Arthur’s voice became louder.

“I deserve the truth.”

And this time…

everyone listened.

Matteo looked at his son.

“You do.”

A pause.

“You always did.”

He lowered the weapon slightly.

Not enough to make anyone comfortable.

But enough to show he was listening.

“Twenty-five years ago, your grandfather built an empire.”

Arthur said nothing.

“Your grandfather believed fear was the only way to control people.”

Matteo continued.

“He created relationships with dangerous men.”

“Victor.”

Matteo looked at him.

“Yes.”

Victor’s expression changed.

For the first time that night…

he looked nervous.

Matteo noticed.

“Victor was never just an employee.”

Victor said nothing.

“He was the architect behind everything.”

My mother’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew.”

Matteo looked at her.

“I suspected.”

“Suspected?”

Emily’s voice broke.

“People disappeared.”

She stepped forward.

“Families lost children.”

Her eyes filled with anger.

“And you suspected?”

Matteo looked away.

That was the first time I saw him look ashamed.

“I was trying to gather proof.”

Arthur shook his head.

“While people suffered?”

“I was trying to stop it.”

“No.”

Arthur stepped closer.

“You were trying to protect the family name.”

Matteo didn’t answer.

Because maybe…

he knew it was true.

The silence said more than words.

I looked at my mother.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had carried this story alone for decades.

“What happened to you?”

Her eyes moved to me.

“My disappearance?”

I nodded.

She swallowed.

“Victor found out I had evidence.”

My stomach tightened.

“He threatened Lena.”

My breath stopped.

“He told me he would take you away if I exposed him.”

A tear moved down her face.

“So I disappeared.”

I looked down.

The pain was overwhelming.

Not because she left.

Because she never did.

She had been close.

Somewhere.

Fighting.

Waiting.

“Why didn’t you come back?”

Her expression broke.

“I tried.”

The words were almost a whisper.

“Many times.”

“Then why?”

“Because every time I got close…”

She looked at Clara.

“Someone stopped me.”

Everyone turned.

Clara closed her eyes.

“I didn’t have a choice.”

My heart sank.

“Clara.”

She looked at me.

“I thought I was protecting you.”

Again.

That sentence.

But this time…

I understood the difference.

She wasn’t using it as an excuse.

She was admitting her mistake.

“I believed Victor would kill you.”

My mother looked at her.

“And you believed him.”

Clara cried.

“I was scared.”

Emily nodded sadly.

“I know.”

That surprised me.

“You know?”

My mother looked at me.

“Because I was scared too.”

The room became quiet.

Two women.

Both protecting me.

Both hurting me.

Both making choices I never asked them to make.

Then Victor moved.

It was small.

Barely noticeable.

But Arthur saw it.

“Don’t.”

Victor froze.

Arthur stepped forward.

“You’re finished.”

Victor smiled.

“Am I?”

He looked at me.

“You still don’t know the most important part.”

I felt cold.

“What?”

Victor looked at Matteo.

“Tell her.”

Nobody spoke.

“Tell her who her real father is.”

The world stopped.

I looked at Matteo.

Then Arthur.

Then my mother.

“No.”

My voice was quiet.

“No more secrets.”

Emily looked at me.

Tears in her eyes.

“Lena…”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I spent my entire life living inside someone else’s story.”

My voice trembled.

“I deserve my own truth.”

Matteo closed his eyes.

Then finally…

he spoke.

“Lena.”

A pause.

“Your father was not me.”

My heart dropped.

Arthur looked confused.

Victor smiled.

And then Matteo said the words nobody expected.

“Your father was my brother.”

Silence.

A million thoughts collided.

“My…”

I couldn’t finish.

Matteo looked at Arthur.

“Your uncle.”

Arthur froze.

“No.”

Victor’s smile widened.

“Yes.”

I looked at Arthur.

The man who had protected me.

The man who had stood beside me through every secret.

The man whose family was tied to mine in ways neither of us understood.

But Matteo wasn’t finished.

“Your birth was the reason everything started.”

My hands trembled.

“Why?”

Matteo looked at Victor.

“Because your father discovered what Victor was doing.”

Victor’s face changed.

“He tried to expose him.”

A pause.

“And Victor killed him.”

The warehouse went silent.

Arthur looked at Victor with pure hatred.

“You killed my uncle.”

Victor shrugged.

“He made a mistake.”

Arthur moved.

Fast.

But Matteo spoke.

“Wait.”

Everyone stopped.

Because the pain in Matteo’s voice changed the room.

“Arthur.”

His son looked at him.

“I spent fifteen years trying to undo what I helped create.”

Arthur stared.

“You helped?”

Matteo looked down.

“Yes.”

The admission shocked everyone.

“I protected the family name.”

A pause.

“I protected the wrong people.”

Arthur’s anger faded slightly.

Replaced by disappointment.

And somehow…

that was worse.

Matteo looked at me.

“I failed your mother.”

Then Arthur.

“I failed you.”

For the first time…

the powerful man everyone feared looked like an old man carrying regret.

“I cannot change the past.”

A pause.

“But I can stop Victor from taking anything else.”

Victor suddenly smiled.

“You always were sentimental.”

Then the warehouse doors slammed shut.

The lights went off.

And when they came back…

Victor was gone.

Along with the evidence.

But one thing remained.

A single envelope left on the floor.

Arthur picked it up.

Inside was one final message.

Only six words.

He read it.

Then his face changed.

“What?”

I asked.

Arthur looked at me.

And whispered:

“Victor wasn’t working alone.”

A pause.

“There’s someone else.”

My heart sank.

“Who?”

Arthur looked toward the darkness outside.

And said the words that made everyone freeze.

“The person who ordered my father’s disappearance…”

May you like

A pause.

“Was someone we trusted.”
