Chapter 5 - The Woman The World Had Forgotten

Elena woke up before sunrise.

For a few seconds, she did not know where she was.

The ceiling above her was unfamiliar.

The bed beneath her felt too soft.

The room was too quiet.

Her body reacted before her mind could catch up.

She sat up quickly, heart racing, expecting the cold pavement beneath her, the sound of passing cars, the uncomfortable weight of her old coat wrapped around her.

But there was nothing.

Only warmth.

Only silence.

Only a room that looked like it belonged to someone else.

Then she remembered.

The harbor.

The boy.

The church.

Lorenzo Moretti.

Slowly, Elena looked around.

The room was simple compared to the rest of the estate.

No unnecessary decorations.

No signs of luxury meant to impress.

Just a small bed, a chair near the window, and clean clothes placed neatly on a table.

Someone had prepared everything for her.

A shower.

Fresh clothing.

Food.

Things that used to be normal.

Things that now felt strange.

Elena touched the sleeve of the sweater on the table.

It was soft.

Clean.

For months, she had measured every decision based on survival.

Where could she sleep?

Where could she find food?

How long could she stay somewhere before people asked her to leave?

Now someone had given her a room without asking for anything.

And she did not know how to accept it.

A knock came at the door.

Elena immediately stood.

“Come in.”

The door opened, and the same housekeeper from the night before entered.

“Good morning.”

Elena nodded.

“Morning.”

The woman smiled.

“My name is Clara.”

“Elena.”

“I know.”

That made Elena pause.

Clara noticed.

“Mr. Moretti asked me to make sure you had everything you needed.”

Elena looked down.

“I don’t need much.”

Clara looked around the room.

“Most people say that when they are used to having nothing.”

The words were gentle.

Not pitying.

That made them harder to hear.

Elena looked away.

“I’m leaving today.”

Clara did not argue.

Instead, she simply asked:

“Where will you go?”

The question was quiet.

But it hit harder than Elena expected.

She had no answer.

Clara understood.

“You don’t have to decide your entire life this morning.”

Elena looked at her.

“That’s easy to say when you have somewhere to return to.”

Clara’s expression softened.

“Maybe.”

A pause.

“But everyone deserves somewhere.”

Before Elena could respond, Clara placed a small tray on the table.

Breakfast.

Real breakfast.

Eggs.

Bread.

Coffee.

Elena stared at it.

“When was the last time you ate something warm?”

The question made Elena uncomfortable.

Because she honestly could not remember.

Clara left without waiting for an answer.

Elena sat down slowly.

She stared at the food for several seconds.

Then she picked up the coffee.

The warmth spread through her hands.

And for the first time in a long time, she allowed herself to feel something other than survival.

Peace.

Only for a moment.

Because peace was never something that lasted in Lorenzo Moretti’s world.

Downstairs, Lorenzo stood inside his office looking at security reports.

He had not slept.

Not because of business.

Not because of enemies.

Because every time he closed his eyes, he saw his son hiding behind those fishing traps.

Cold.

Terrified.

Alone.

A feeling he hated more than any enemy was the realization that he had failed to protect his child.

His phone rang.

He answered immediately.

“Yes?”

“Mr. Moretti.”

It was his security chief, Adrian.

“What did you find?”

A pause.

“We traced the communication from the kidnappers.”

Lorenzo’s expression hardened.

“And?”

“The order did not come from outside.”

Silence.

Lorenzo already knew what that meant.

Someone inside had betrayed him.

“Keep going.”

Adrian lowered his voice.

“The information about your son’s location came from someone with access to the family schedule.”

Lorenzo looked toward the window.

The estate grounds stretched below.

Everything he had built.

Everything he controlled.

And yet someone had entered the center of it.

“Find them.”

“We are trying.”

“No.”

Lorenzo’s voice became colder.

“Find them.”

The call ended.

For years, Lorenzo Moretti had built his reputation on one simple rule.

Nobody touched his family.

Nobody.

But this time, the person who tried was not outside the walls.

They were already inside.

A knock interrupted his thoughts.

The door opened.

Elena stood there.

She had changed into the clean clothes provided.

Simple.

Nothing expensive.

But she looked different.

Not because of the clothes.

Because she looked more like the person she used to be.

The woman who existed before the streets took everything.

Lorenzo noticed.

And for a second, he forgot what he wanted to say.

“Elena.”

“I need to talk to you.”

He nodded.

“Come in.”

She entered.

But she did not sit.

“I’m leaving.”

Lorenzo expected those words.

Still, hearing them bothered him.

“Why?”

“Because this place isn’t mine.”

“You saved my son.”

“That doesn’t mean I belong here.”

Lorenzo studied her.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

“Why?”

Elena looked confused.

“Why what?”

“Why do you believe you don’t belong anywhere?”

The question stopped her.

Because it was not the question she expected.

She expected him to talk about money.

Security.

Protection.

Not her.

“I don’t know.”

It was the first honest answer she gave.

Lorenzo leaned back slightly.

“Tell me.”

She shook her head.

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It does.”

“You don’t know anything about me.”

“You’re right.”

He looked at her.

“But I know enough.”

Elena remained silent.

Lorenzo continued.

“I know you had every reason to walk away from my son.”

“I almost did.”

“But you didn’t.”

She looked down.

“I know what it feels like when nobody comes.”

The words were quiet.

And something changed in Lorenzo’s expression.

Because there was pain behind them.

Not weakness.

Pain.

The kind people carried after losing too much.

“What happened to you?”

Elena hesitated.

She had not talked about her past in months.

Maybe years.

Not because she wanted to hide it.

Because she did not believe anyone cared.

“I lost my family.”

Lorenzo waited.

“My mother died when I was younger.”

A pause.

“My husband left after my life became difficult.”

She swallowed.

“Then I lost my apartment.”

The words came slowly.

“One thing after another.”

Lorenzo listened.

No interruptions.

No judgment.

Finally, Elena said:

“And eventually, people stopped seeing me.”

That sentence stayed with him.

Because Lorenzo Moretti was surrounded by people every day.

Yet he understood exactly what she meant.

Being surrounded did not mean being seen.

“You think nobody sees you.”

Elena gave a small, bitter smile.

“They don’t.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“I do.”

The words surprised both of them.

Elena looked up.

He continued.

“I saw you at the harbor.”

“That was different.”

“No.”

His voice was firm.

“I saw a woman who was afraid but still protected my son.”

Elena said nothing.

“I saw someone who had nothing and still gave.”

For once, she had no response.

Because compliments from strangers were easy to ignore.

But from Lorenzo Moretti?

A man who had built his life around judging people?

That was different.

Before she could speak, the office door opened.

Adrian entered.

His face was serious.

“Mr. Moretti.”

Lorenzo immediately turned.

“What happened?”

“We found the person who helped arrange the kidnapping.”

Elena watched Lorenzo carefully.

“Who?”

Adrian looked at him.

Then at Elena.

“Someone from inside the organization.”

The room became cold.

Lorenzo stood.

“Name.”

Adrian hesitated.

“Marco Bellini.”

Lorenzo’s eyes darkened.

The same name.

The same betrayal.

But Adrian continued.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“The kidnappers weren’t only trying to take your son.”

A pause.

“They were trying to send a message.”

Lorenzo stared at him.

“What message?”

Adrian looked uncomfortable.

“They wanted you to know that even your own house is not safe.”

Silence filled the room.

Elena looked at Lorenzo.

For the first time, she saw something beyond power.

She saw a man who had spent his entire life protecting others.

And now someone had found the one place he could be hurt.

His family.

Lorenzo looked toward the window.

Then slowly back at Elena.

“You should leave.”

The sudden change surprised her.

“What?”

“This is becoming dangerous.”

Elena understood.

He was trying to protect her.

But something inside her refused.

“You think sending me away makes me safe?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

Elena stepped closer.

“Last night, your son was in danger because someone thought they could control what happened.”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“I’m not running because someone dangerous exists.”

For a moment, Lorenzo said nothing.

Because that sounded exactly like something he would say.

And that realization disturbed him.

The woman who had been invisible to the world was standing in front of him with more courage than many of the people who worked for him.

Outside, the city continued moving.

Enemies were waiting.

Secrets were buried.

Betrayal was coming closer.

But inside the Moretti estate, something unexpected had begun.

A bond.

Not built on money.

Not built on power.

Built on one simple truth.

May you like

A woman everyone had forgotten had saved the only person Lorenzo Moretti could never lose.

And now, whether he wanted it or not, he had a debt he could not repay.
