Chapter 5 - The Secret Behind the Nursery Wall

An old man stepped from the hidden passage.
Grace did not recognize him.
Dominic did.
“Elias Martin.”
Elena’s father raised both hands.
“Samuel is safe.”
Grace rushed toward him.
“Where?”
“With Elena.”
Dominic grabbed Elias by the coat.
“You have ten seconds.”
“Dominic!”
Grace caught his wrist.
The same gesture as Midtown.
Again.
Dominic looked down.
Released him.
Elias breathed.
“The kidnapping was staged.”
Grace stared.
“You took Samuel?”
“Elena did.”
“Why?”
“Because the cameras had to see him disappear.”
“Why?”
“To make the traitor move.”
Dominic’s face hardened.
“You used an infant as bait.”
“No. We removed him before whoever was watching could.”
“Where is Matteo?”
“Trying to expose the same person.”
Grace looked around the nursery.
“How long has this passage existed?”
“Your mother built it.”
Dominic stared.
“My mother?”
“She knew she was being watched.”
Elias led them through.
The passage descended inside the walls.
It ended beneath the kitchen.
A hidden room contained old photographs, tapes, documents, and monitors connected to cameras throughout the estate.
Grace’s skin crawled.
Someone had been watching every room.
For years.
Elias pointed to one screen.
Samuel slept in Elena’s arms at an unknown safe location.
Grace nearly collapsed with relief.
Dominic watched the image.
“Why didn’t Matteo tell me?”
“He does not trust you.”
“That excuse is becoming tiresome.”
“He watched your mother die.”
“So did I.”
“No,” Elias said.
“You were told she died.”
Dominic went still.
Elias looked toward an old monitor.
“Matteo saw what happened.”
The truth was uglier than any of them expected.
Eva had survived the poisoning.
For several hours.
Matteo discovered her barely conscious in the family’s private medical room.
She told him the person responsible was close to Dominic.
Before she could name them, guards arrived.
Matteo fled.
Eva died before dawn.
Elias falsified portions of the record under threat.
Later, he helped Matteo disappear.
“Who ordered you?” Dominic asked.
Elias looked at him.
“I never saw the person’s face.”
“Voice?”
“Altered.”
“Payments?”
“Shell corporations.”
“Then after twenty-six years, you know nothing?”
“I know one thing.”
Elias pointed toward the kitchen camera.
“The person is still inside this house.”
Grace felt cold.
They constructed a trap.
Samuel would remain hidden.
Grace would pretend to prepare to leave the mansion.
Dominic would announce privately that Elias had given him the identity of Eva’s killer.
Only four people would hear it.
Sofia.
Victor.
Julian.
Anthony.
Then they would wait.
The first reaction came from Anthony.
He tried to leave.
Victor stopped him.
Anthony became furious.
“Am I a prisoner?”
“For tonight.”
“You’ve lost your mind.”
“Possibly.”
Julian remained calm.
Too calm, Grace thought.
Sofia went to church.
Victor monitored security.
At midnight, Elias’s hidden room was attacked.
A masked figure entered through the service tunnel.
Victor’s men captured him.
He was not family.
He was a paid intruder.
“Who hired you?” Dominic asked.
The man refused.
Grace looked at his shoes.
Kitchen grease stained one sole.
“He’s been here before.”
Victor searched employment records.
The man had worked two temporary catering events at the mansion.
Both hired through Julian’s office.
Dominic confronted Julian.
The attorney stared.
“You think I keep track of caterers?”
“You signed the invoices.”
“My assistant processes them.”
“Name?”
“Rachel Stone.”
They called Rachel.
No answer.
Her apartment was empty.
Then Anthony’s car exploded in the driveway.
Nobody was inside.
But panic spread.
Someone wanted chaos.
Grace returned to the kitchen.
She needed something ordinary.
Flour.
Butter.
Garlic.
A task with edges she understood.
Sofia joined her.
“You cook when frightened.”
“Yes.”
“I clean.”
They worked silently.
Grace eventually asked, “Did you know Eva?”
Sofia stopped.
“Yes.”
“Were you here when she died?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell Dominic about the passage?”
Sofia’s eyes filled.
“Because Eva made me promise.”
“Even after all this?”
“Especially after.”
Grace turned.
“What are you hiding?”
Sofia opened her mouth.
A gunshot sounded upstairs.
Dominic shouted.
Grace ran.
Julian lay bleeding in the hall.
Victor stood over him holding a gun.
Dominic stared between them.
“I found him entering your study,” Victor said.
Julian clutched his shoulder.
“He shot me before I could explain.”
“Explain what?” Dominic demanded.
Julian looked at Grace.
“I know who Rachel Stone really is.”
“Who?”
“She isn’t my assistant.”
Dominic went still.
“Then who is she?”
Julian reached into his jacket slowly.
Victor raised the gun.
Grace shouted, “Wait!”
Julian produced a photograph.
He handed it to Dominic.
A younger Eva stood beside a woman Grace recognized.
Sofia.
Between them was a little girl.
On the back:
RACHEL VALENTI
1993
Dominic looked at Sofia.
Sofia had followed them upstairs.
Her face collapsed.
Dominic whispered, “Who is Rachel?”
Sofia began crying.
“She’s your sister.”
Nobody spoke.
Dominic stared at her.
“My what?”
“Eva had a daughter.”
“Before Matteo and me?”
“No.”
Sofia’s voice broke.
“After.”
Grace frowned.
“That isn’t possible.”
Sofia looked at Dominic.
“Your mother did not die when you were told she died.”
The hallway went silent.
Dominic’s face emptied.
“What?”
Sofia stepped toward him.
“The woman buried in that coffin was not Eva.”
Dominic backed away.
Grace saw genuine fear in him for the first time.
“If my mother didn’t die that night…”
Sofia nodded.
“She lived four more years.”
Dominic’s phone rang.
Nobody moved.
He answered slowly.
A woman spoke.
Grace could hear only one sentence from several feet away.
“Hello, Dominic.”
Dominic’s hand began shaking.
Sofia covered her mouth.
May you like
The woman continued:
“It’s Rachel.”
