Chapter 7 - The House Where Everything Began

"Her."
The word came from Claire’s mouth like she was afraid to say it.
I stared at her.
The hospital hallway was still silent.
The intercom remained on.
Waiting.
The voice had called my name.
But Claire looked like she had heard something else.
Something much worse.
"Who is her?" I asked.
Nobody answered.
Wesley stepped closer.
"Emma, we need to leave."
I looked at him.
"Leave?"
He nodded.
"Now."
I almost smiled.
After everything.
After the lies.
After the hidden files.
After discovering my sister was alive and my memory had been altered...
he still thought the answer was to run.
"No."
His expression changed.
"Emma."
"No."
I picked up my phone.
I looked at the picture again.
My childhood bedroom.
The words written on the wall.
YOU NEVER FORGOT HER.
"I want to go there."
Claire immediately shook her head.
"No."
The reaction was too fast.
Too emotional.
I turned toward her.
"Why?"
She looked away.
"Because that's exactly what they want."
"Who?"
Claire didn't answer.
And that silence told me more than words could.
Someone had been controlling the story.
Someone had decided what I knew.
What I didn't know.
Who disappeared.
Who returned.
Who was allowed to speak.
And for the first time in years...
I realized something terrifying.
My entire life might have been built around a lie.
"We're going," I said.
Wesley looked at me.
"Emma."
"No."
I looked directly at him.
"You don't get to decide anymore."
Those words hurt him.
I saw it.
But I couldn't stop.
Not after finding out that the people closest to me had been protecting secrets instead of protecting me.
Claire slowly nodded.
"She's right."
Wesley looked at her.
"You know what happens if we go there."
Claire's eyes became darker.
"Yes."
A pause.
"That's why we have to."
The drive to my old house felt longer than it should have.
Nobody spoke.
Wesley drove.
Claire sat in the passenger seat.
I sat in the back, staring out the window.
Trying to remember.
Trying to force my mind to unlock something.
Anything.
But every memory felt like a door with no handle.
I remembered the house.
The kitchen.
The stairs.
The garden.
But there was one part missing.
A blank space.
A place my mind refused to enter.
"What happened there?"
My voice broke the silence.
Claire looked back.
"What?"
"The night you disappeared."
Her expression changed.
"Emma..."
"No."
I shook my head.
"I need to know."
Claire looked out the window.
"That night wasn't when I disappeared."
I frowned.
"What do you mean?"
She took a deep breath.
"I disappeared before that."
I felt confused.
"You were gone for twelve years."
She nodded.
"Not exactly."
The car became silent.
"What does that mean?"
Claire looked at Wesley.
He didn't answer.
That scared me.
Because Wesley always had answers.
Medical answers.
Logical answers.
But this?
This was something else.
"Claire."
She closed her eyes.
"I was hidden."
"By who?"
She looked at me.
"By the same people who made you forget."
My heart dropped.
When we arrived, the house looked exactly the way I remembered.
But also completely different.
The paint was faded.
The front garden was overgrown.
The windows were dark.
It looked abandoned.
But I knew better now.
Nothing was ever abandoned.
Not anymore.
Wesley parked the car.
Nobody moved.
"Are you sure?" he asked.
I opened the door.
"No."
I stepped outside.
"But I'm tired of being afraid of things I don't remember."
The front door was locked.
Claire reached into her coat.
She pulled out an old key.
I stared.
"You still have it?"
She nodded.
"I kept it."
"Why?"
Her answer was quiet.
"Because I knew one day you would come back."
The key turned.
The door opened.
The house smelled exactly like my childhood.
Dust.
Wood.
Old memories.
I stepped inside.
Immediately, something happened.
A flash.
A memory.
A scream.
I grabbed the wall.
"Emma?"
Wesley caught my arm.
I closed my eyes.
Something was there.
A moment.
A voice.
A woman's voice.
"Don't let them find her."
I opened my eyes.
"What?"
Claire looked terrified.
"What did you hear?"
I looked at her.
"A woman."
Her face went pale.
"What did she say?"
I swallowed.
"She said..."
I stopped.
Because suddenly I remembered something else.
A face.
A woman kneeling on the floor.
Holding my hand.
Crying.
And saying:
"Promise me you'll protect her."
I looked at Claire.
"Who was she?"
Claire didn't answer.
Because she was crying.
We searched the house for almost an hour.
Nothing.
No documents.
No hidden files.
No explanation.
Until Wesley noticed something.
"The basement."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He pointed.
The old basement door.
It was slightly open.
I stared.
"I thought this house was empty."
Claire whispered:
"It was supposed to be."
The three of us stood there.
Nobody wanted to move.
Because sometimes the things you search for...
are the things you fear finding.
Wesley opened the door.
The stairs descended into darkness.
I turned on my phone flashlight.
We walked down.
Slowly.
At the bottom was a small room.
Not a basement.
A hidden room.
There were boxes everywhere.
Old photographs.
Medical records.
And dozens of tapes.
My breathing stopped.
Because every tape had a name.
Not mine.
Not Claire's.
Someone else's.
I picked one up.
The label read:
"Subject A."
"What is this?"
Wesley looked at it.
"I don't know."
Claire did.
Her face changed.
"Yes, you do."
Wesley looked at her.
"You knew?"
Claire stepped back.
"You knew from the beginning."
I looked between them.
"What are you talking about?"
Nobody answered.
I opened another box.
Inside was a photograph.
Three people.
A younger Wesley.
Claire.
And a woman.
A woman holding a baby.
The baby's face was covered.
But written on the back were four words.
I knew those words.
Because they had appeared everywhere.
YOU NEVER FORGOT HER.
My hands shook.
"Who is the baby?"
Claire looked at me.
And whispered:
"Your daughter."
The world stopped.
"What?"
Wesley looked devastated.
"Emma..."
"No."
I stepped back.
"No."
I looked at the picture again.
"My daughter?"
Claire nodded.
"You had a child."
My mind rejected it.
"I would remember."
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"That's why they took the memory."
I couldn't breathe.
"Where is she?"
Nobody answered.
Then the lights in the basement turned on.
A monitor on the wall flickered.
A video started playing.
My own voice filled the room.
But this time...
I remembered.
Because the woman on the screen was not six years younger.
She was from tonight.
The video had been recorded moments ago.
I watched myself look directly into the camera.
My face was terrified.
And I said:
"If you're watching this, it means they failed to keep me away from the truth."
I stepped closer.
The screen continued.
"And it means you finally found out about the girl."
My heart stopped.
Because then my own voice said a name.
A name I had never heard before.
A name that made Claire collapse.
"Her name is Lily."
The video suddenly glitched.
The screen went black.
Then one final message appeared.
"Emma, your daughter is alive."
I stared.
Nobody moved.
Then another line appeared.
"She's been closer to you than you think."
May you like
Behind us...
the basement door slowly locked from the outside.
