Chapter 3 - The Secret Hidden Behind The Holloway Name

I spent the entire night staring at that message.
CLAIRE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO FIND THE TWINS.
Five words.
That was all.
But those five words changed everything I thought I knew about that night.
I had spent hours convincing myself that I was just unlucky.
Wrong place.
Wrong time.
A simple cleaning worker who happened to hear a baby crying when everyone else was running away.
That explanation was easier.
Because if I was just unlucky, then maybe everything would eventually return to normal.
But if someone had planned for me to be there…
If someone knew I would find Ethan and Owen…
Then my entire life had been pulled into something much bigger than I understood.
I looked at Grant.
"What does that mean?"
He didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than if he had.
Grant Holloway was a man who always seemed to have an answer.
A solution.
A plan.
But now he looked at the message like it was something from a nightmare he thought he had buried years ago.
Finally, he took the phone back.
"I don't know."
I watched him carefully.
"You really don't know?"
His eyes met mine.
And for the first time, I saw something rare.
Uncertainty.
"No."
He placed the phone on the table.
"But I intend to find out."
The next morning, the entire penthouse changed.
More guards.
More cameras.
More locked doors.
The atmosphere felt like a storm waiting to happen.
I had never lived anywhere with security before.
My old apartment had a broken lock and a neighbor who played loud music every night.
Now I had men watching every hallway and armored vehicles waiting downstairs.
It felt impossible.
A week ago, my biggest problem was whether I could afford groceries until payday.
Now I was connected to one of the most dangerous families in Chicago.
And somehow…
The most frightening part was not the danger.
It was that I still cared.
Every morning, I checked on Ethan and Owen.
They had become my routine.
The twins recognized me now.
When I entered the nursery, their tiny faces would turn toward me.
Their little hands would reach out.
And every time they did, I remembered the night I pulled them through that dark laundry chute.
I remembered how scared they were.
How scared I was.
But I also remembered something else.
The moment I realized I couldn’t leave them.
Something inside me had changed.
Before them, I was someone who survived.
After them…
I became someone who protected.
That scared me.
Because protecting people meant giving them the power to hurt you.
And I had already seen what betrayal looked like.
Especially from a person who was supposed to love them.
Three days after the attack, Grant called me into his office.
It wasn’t like the rest of the penthouse.
No expensive decorations.
No family pictures.
Just a large desk, several screens, and a wall covered with information.
I stopped when I saw it.
Photos.
Names.
Connections.
A whole world I knew nothing about.
Grant noticed my expression.
"This is everything we have on Victor."
I looked at the wall.
"Who is he?"
Grant was silent for a moment.
Then he walked toward the window.
"Someone who believes everything has a price."
"Including children?"
His face hardened.
"Especially children."
I felt a chill.
"What does he want?"
Grant looked back at me.
"For years, Victor and I were partners."
That surprised me.
"You worked together?"
"Yes."
The answer was simple.
But I could hear the regret behind it.
"We built something together."
"Your empire?"
He nodded.
"At first, we believed we were creating security. A business. A future."
"And then?"
Grant looked down.
"Then we discovered we wanted different things."
I waited.
"What did he want?"
His eyes became darker.
"Control."
The word hung between us.
"He didn't want money, Claire. Money was never enough for him."
I looked at the wall.
"And Vanessa?"
Grant’s expression changed.
That was my answer before he even spoke.
"Vanessa knew Victor before she knew me."
I froze.
"What?"
Grant nodded slowly.
"I found out recently."
The room felt colder.
"You married someone who was connected to your enemy?"
"I didn't know."
For some reason, I believed him.
Maybe because I had seen the pain in his face when he watched the security footage.
Maybe because nobody could fake that kind of heartbreak.
"How did you find out?"
Grant walked back to his desk and opened a file.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Messages.
Evidence.
Vanessa.
Victor.
Together.
Years ago.
My stomach tightened.
"She was working with him."
Grant nodded.
"Possibly."
"Possibly?"
"I don't believe anything until I know the entire truth."
I looked at him.
"Even after everything?"
"Especially after everything."
That was the difference between Grant and everyone else.
He didn’t survive because he trusted.
He survived because he questioned.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
A few seconds later, his expression changed.
"Where?"
A pause.
"I'm coming."
He ended the call.
"What happened?"
His jaw tightened.
"Someone found Vanessa."
I stood.
"She’s alive?"
Grant looked at me.
"Yes."
The news should have surprised me.
But somehow…
I felt like I already knew.
"Where is she?"
"She was seen leaving a private location outside the city."
"With Victor?"
Grant didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The silence said enough.
That night, I finally learned something important about powerful people.
They were not afraid of enemies.
They were afraid of secrets.
Because enemies could be fought.
Secrets could destroy everything.
The next morning, Grant decided to move the twins to another location.
A safer location.
I watched the security team prepare.
Cars.
Guards.
Routes.
Everything planned perfectly.
But something bothered me.
A feeling I couldn’t explain.
I walked toward Grant.
"Something is wrong."
He looked at me.
"What?"
"I don't know."
He studied my face.
"You have a reason?"
I hesitated.
"No."
A small pause.
"Just a feeling."
Most people would have ignored me.
But Grant didn't.
He turned to his security team.
"Stop."
Everyone froze.
"Change the route."
The head of security looked confused.
"Sir?"
"Change it."
They obeyed.
I stared at him.
"You believed me?"
Grant looked at the twins.
Then at me.
"You crawled through a laundry shaft with my sons in your arms."
A pause.
"I stopped doubting your instincts a long time ago."
Something about those words affected me more than I expected.
Because nobody had trusted me before.
Not like that.
Not completely.
But before I could answer, one of the guards rushed inside.
"Mr. Holloway."
Grant turned.
The guard looked nervous.
"We found something in the twins' room."
My heart dropped.
"What?"
The guard handed him a small envelope.
"No one knows how it got there."
Grant opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of me.
Standing in the nursery.
Holding Ethan and Owen.
Taken on the night of the attack.
But there was something written on the back.
Grant read it silently.
Then his face changed.
"Tell me."
He looked at me.
His voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
"Claire..."
I stepped closer.
"What does it say?"
Grant turned the photo around.
Three words.
Three words that made my blood run cold.
SHE WAS CHOSEN.
I stared at the message.
Chosen.
Not found.
Not discovered.
Chosen.
Someone had wanted me there.
Someone had known I would save the twins.
Someone had placed me exactly where they needed me.
And suddenly, a terrifying thought entered my mind.
"What if..."
My voice shook.
"What if they didn't attack the mansion to kill the babies?"
Grant looked at me.
"What are you saying?"
I looked at the photograph in his hand.
"What if the babies were only part of the plan?"
The room went silent.
Because deep down…
Grant and I both realized the same thing.
Maybe the attack was never about destroying the Holloway family.
Maybe it was about creating a new one.
May you like
And somehow…
I was the missing piece they needed.
