Chapter 5 - The Bullet Meant for Sofia

Vincent descended the stairs slowly.

His face revealed nothing.

Teresa clutched the key.

Emma expected shouting.

Instead, Vincent said, “Give it to me.”

Teresa shook her head.

“No.”

“Teresa.”

“I promised Caleb.”

“You promised a dead man while my wife’s killer remained free.”

“And that grief is exactly why he didn’t trust you with it.”

The words landed hard.

Emma stepped between them.

“Stop.”

Vincent looked at her.

“This concerns my family.”

“It concerns mine too.”

Silence.

She took the key from Teresa.

“We go together.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“No.”

“Then I go alone.”

“You won’t make it past the gate.”

“Want to test me?”

For several seconds, they stared at each other.

Then Vincent laughed once.

Tired.

Disbelieving.

“You are the most difficult woman I have ever met.”

Emma folded her arms.

“And yet here you are.”

They left before dawn.

Marco drove.

Vincent sat beside him.

Emma and Teresa sat in back.

Sofia remained at the estate with Nico and additional security.

Emma hated leaving her.

But Vincent had doubled the guards.

No one knew their destination except those in the vehicle.

The warehouse district looked abandoned.

Rusting doors.

Broken windows.

Empty loading docks.

The brass key opened a small office inside warehouse fourteen.

Behind an old metal cabinet, they found a locked steel box.

Emma inserted the key.

Inside were photographs.

Cargo manifests.

Bank documents.

A flash drive.

And a handwritten letter from Caleb.

Emma,

If you are reading this, I failed to keep you out of it.

I’m sorry.

She stopped reading.

Vincent stood silently.

Emma continued.

Isabella Moretti found evidence that Salvatore Moretti used Vincent’s daughter’s disability foundation to move money and purchase influence. When Isabella confronted him, he threatened Sofia. Isabella planned to expose everything. I photographed the records.

Emma’s hands shook.

Then:

But Salvatore is not working alone.

Vincent leaned closer.

Emma read the next line.

The second person is someone Vincent trusts more than blood.

Everyone looked at Teresa.

She shook her head.

Emma did.

Caleb had written:

If Vincent sees only Salvatore’s name, he’ll go after him and miss the person who opened the doors.

Below that was a photograph.

Marco took it.

His face changed.

Vincent reached for it.

The image showed Salvatore standing beside a younger man.

Dante.

Vincent’s cousin.

Emma whispered, “Dante.”

Vincent stared at the photograph.

“No.”

Marco looked grim.

“It fits.”

Vincent backed away.

Dante had been at his wedding.

Dante had held Sofia hours after she was born.

Dante had stood beside him at Isabella’s funeral.

Betrayal did not always come from enemies.

Sometimes it wore family photographs like armor.

The flash drive contained accounting records.

Enough to expose both men.

But one folder was encrypted.

Emma entered Caleb’s birthday.

Wrong.

Her birthday.

Wrong.

Vincent asked, “What did your brother care about most?”

Emma almost answered family.

Then remembered.

“Pictures.”

She studied the folder name.

SILENCE.

Caleb had once told her silence was not emptiness.

People only thought it was.

Emma typed:

SILENCEISNOTEMPTY

The folder opened.

Inside was video.

Isabella appeared on screen.

Vincent stopped breathing.

She was sitting at a table.

Caleb stood behind the camera.

Isabella spoke slowly so he could read her lips.

“Vincent, if you’re seeing this, I’m sorry.”

Vincent moved closer.

Emma looked away, giving him privacy without leaving.

Isabella continued.

“Salvatore believes you are weakening the family. Dante agrees. They are using Sofia’s foundation to hide money and build a network outside your control.”

Vincent’s face hardened.

Then Isabella said:

“If anything happens to me, do not become the man they expect you to become.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

The message ended.

For years, he had believed Isabella died because of his enemies.

The truth was worse.

Family killed her because she was trying to stop them.

A phone rang.

Marco answered.

His expression changed instantly.

“Nico?”

Silence.

“What happened?”

Vincent turned.

Marco’s face went pale.

“Boss. We have a problem.”

“What?”

“Sofia’s gone.”

Everything stopped.

Vincent grabbed the phone.

“What do you mean gone?”

Nico’s voice shook through the speaker.

“The east security team was drugged. Cameras looped. Her room is empty.”

Vincent looked at Dante’s photograph.

A message arrived.

Video.

Sofia sat in a chair.

Unhurt.

Terrified.

Salvatore stood behind her.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Smiling.

“Vincent,” he said, “bring the drive.”

Emma felt sick.

Salvatore continued.

“And bring Emma Brooks.”

Vincent’s face changed.

“No.”

Salvatore smiled.

“She has something I need.”

Emma looked down at Caleb’s bracelet.

“What?”

Salvatore leaned toward the camera.

“Her brother’s memory.”

The location was sent.

An abandoned train terminal.

Vincent ordered Marco to assemble men.

Emma stopped him.

“No army.”

“He has my daughter.”

“And he expects you to charge in angry.”

Vincent stared at her.

“What do you suggest?”

“Use what he doesn’t expect.”

“What?”

“Me.”

Vincent refused.

Emma did not care.

Sofia had been ignored by everyone in the bakery.

Emma would not ignore her now.

They arrived at the terminal shortly before sunrise.

Vincent wore a wire.

Marco positioned men outside.

Emma carried the flash drive.

It was a copy.

The original had already been sent electronically to an attorney Rachel Voss trusted.

If they did not leave safely, the files would go public.

Vincent hated the plan.

Emma loved that he hated it.

“You stay behind me,” he said.

“No.”

“Emma.”

“If Sofia sees you blocking me, she won’t be able to read my hands.”

That stopped him.

They entered.

Sofia was tied to a chair.

Dante stood beside Salvatore.

Vincent looked at his cousin.

Dante smiled sadly.

“You always were slow when it came to family.”

Vincent’s voice was cold.

“You killed Isabella.”

Dante shrugged.

“Salvatore planned it.”

Salvatore glared at him.

“Careful.”

Emma focused on Sofia.

The girl was watching her.

Emma moved her fingers subtly.

Are you hurt?

Sofia shook her head.

Can you move your hands?

A little.

Emma signed:

When I say, drop.

Sofia’s eyes widened.

Salvatore noticed.

“What are you doing?”

Emma lowered her hands.

“Nothing.”

He walked toward her.

“You look like your brother around the eyes.”

Emma’s throat tightened.

“You killed him too?”

“No.”

Dante smiled.

“I did.”

Vincent lunged.

Salvatore raised a gun toward Sofia.

Everything stopped.

“Another step.”

Vincent froze.

Dante laughed.

“See? That’s the weakness Isabella gave you.”

Vincent’s eyes burned.

“My daughter is not weakness.”

Emma looked at Sofia.

One chance.

She lifted her fingers.

Now.

Sofia threw herself sideways with the chair.

Vincent moved.

Marco’s team stormed the side entrance.

Dante grabbed Sofia.

Emma ran.

Salvatore shouted.

A gun fired.

Emma saw the muzzle flash.

Saw where it was aimed.

At Sofia.

She did not think.

She stepped between them.

Pain exploded through her shoulder.

The force spun her around.

She hit the concrete.

Sofia screamed without sound.

Vincent’s roar filled the terminal.

Chaos erupted.

Marco tackled Salvatore.

Dante ran.

Two guards chased him.

Vincent dropped beside Emma.

Blood spread across her beige sweater.

His face was white.

“No.”

Emma tried to breathe.

“Is Sofia okay?”

“She’s safe.”

“Show me.”

Sofia appeared beside him.

Crying.

Emma smiled weakly.

Then signed with one hand.

You’re okay.

Sofia grabbed her fingers.

Vincent pressed both hands against Emma’s wound.

“Stay with me.”

Emma looked up at him.

“You sound bossy.”

“Emma.”

“Still bossy.”

His eyes shone.

She had never seen him afraid like this.

Not even in the bakery.

“Don’t close your eyes.”

“I’m tired.”

“No.”

Sofia was sobbing.

Emma forced herself to keep looking at her.

“Tell her,” Emma whispered.

Vincent leaned closer.

“What?”

“Tell her… this isn’t her fault.”

Vincent signed clumsily with one blood-covered hand.

Not your fault.

Sofia shook her head violently.

Emma’s vision blurred.

Sirens approached.

Somewhere, Marco shouted that Salvatore was alive.

Dante was still missing.

Vincent lifted Emma carefully.

She gasped.

“Hospital.”

He carried her toward the exit.

Emma rested her head against his chest.

His heartbeat was wild.

She smiled faintly.

“Thought mafia bosses were calm.”

“Not now.”

“Good.”

“Why good?”

“Means you’re human.”

His jaw tightened.

Emma’s eyes closed.

“Emma!”

She opened them again.

Barely.

Then Marco ran toward them.

“Vincent!”

“What?”

“We found Dante’s car.”

“Where?”

“Empty.”

Vincent kept moving.

Marco followed.

“There’s blood inside.”

“His?”

“We don’t know.”

Then Marco’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

He looked at Vincent.

“It’s Dante.”

Vincent stopped.

Marco put the call on speaker.

Dante’s voice came through.

“You should have let her die.”

Vincent’s expression became murderous.

Dante laughed softly.

“You think this ends with Salvatore?”

A pause.

“You still haven’t figured out who gave me Sofia’s schedule.”

Vincent went still.

Emma opened her eyes.

May you like

Dante whispered one final name.

“Teresa.”
