Chapter 5 - The Daughter William Tried to Protect

Police searched Rebecca’s apartment.
Nothing appeared stolen.
Nothing was disturbed.
The childhood photograph had been removed from a framed family picture on her bookshelf.
Whoever entered had known exactly what to take.
Across Daniel’s face, in black marker, were the words:
YOUR BROTHER WAS NEVER THE TARGET.
Across Rebecca’s chest was a small red X.
Daniel looked at it once.
Then he turned away.
William arrived twenty minutes later.
Rebecca had not called him.
The police had.
He entered the hallway looking like a man who had aged years since the wedding.
Eleanor was with him.
Rebecca saw them and immediately began crying again.
William wrapped both arms around his daughter.
“I’m sorry.”
Rebecca pushed against him.
“For what?”
William closed his eyes.
Her voice sharpened.
“Dad. For what?”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Answer her.”
William looked toward the police officers.
“Not here.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“Of course.”
They relocated to William and Eleanor’s house.
Jonathan Hale joined them.
So did Vanessa.
For the first time since the wedding, all the central pieces were in one room.
Emma sat beside Daniel.
William stood near the fireplace.
No one offered him comfort.
He looked at his wife.
Eleanor’s expression was rigid.
“You need to tell them.”
William nodded.
Then he looked at Rebecca.
“Fifteen years ago, Carter Development nearly collapsed.”
Rebecca frowned.
“What?”
Daniel stared at him.
William continued.
“We were overleveraged. Two projects failed at the same time. Credit froze. I needed cash quickly.”
“Northline,” Daniel said.
William looked at him.
“You know.”
“We found Arthur Cole’s records.”
Vanessa’s face tightened at the mention of her father.
William sat down.
“Arthur, Malcolm, and I were part of a private investment group.”
“You told me you barely knew Malcolm before hiring him,” Daniel said.
“I lied.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Emma watched her.
She already knew.
“How much did you lose?” Daniel asked.
William’s voice was quiet.
“More than twenty million.”
“Company money?”
“Some.”
Jonathan swore under his breath.
Daniel stared at his father.
“You used company money in a private fund?”
“Yes.”
“That’s illegal.”
“It was.”
Rebecca sat slowly.
William continued.
“When the investments began failing, Malcolm offered a way out. He moved funds between entities. Temporarily, he said.”
Emma understood.
“He stole money to hide your losses.”
William nodded.
“At first, I told myself it was restructuring.”
Daniel stood.
“Don’t.”
William looked up.
“Don’t rewrite theft because you were scared.”
“I know what it was.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
Daniel paced away.
Emma touched his hand when he passed.
He stopped.
William continued.
“Arthur discovered what Malcolm was doing. He threatened to report everything.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“My father.”
“Yes.”
“And the threats against my mother?”
William looked ashamed.
“I heard about them later.”
“You did nothing.”
“I tried to convince Arthur to go to the authorities.”
Vanessa stood.
“He didn’t because my mother was being followed.”
“I know.”
“You knew?”
“Eventually.”
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
She turned away.
Emma watched William.
“What does Rebecca have to do with this?”
William’s eyes moved toward his daughter.
Rebecca looked suddenly young.
“Dad?”
“After Arthur backed down, I decided to remove Malcolm.”
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
“But instead you made him CFO.”
William looked at him.
“Because he showed me photographs.”
Silence.
“Of Rebecca,” Eleanor said.
Rebecca stared at her mother.
“What photographs?”
Eleanor’s voice broke.
“You were seventeen.”
Rebecca went pale.
“What photographs?”
“Leaving school,” William said. “Driving. Going to dance practice. Coming home.”
Rebecca covered her mouth.
Emma felt sick.
“Malcolm threatened her?”
“He never said it directly. That was his method. He would show you what he knew and let you imagine the rest.”
“So you promoted him,” Daniel said.
“I kept him close.”
“You rewarded him.”
“I protected your sister.”
Rebecca stood abruptly.
“No.”
William looked at her.
“No?”
“You protected yourself.”
“Rebecca—”
“If you were protecting me, you would have told the police.”
“I was afraid.”
“For me?”
William did not answer.
Rebecca laughed through tears.
“You were afraid they would find out what you did.”
Eleanor stood.
“Enough.”
Rebecca turned.
“Mom, you knew.”
Eleanor’s face crumpled.
“I knew part of it.”
“How much?”
“I knew your father had made financial mistakes. I knew Malcolm threatened the family.”
“Did you know he followed me?”
“Yes.”
Rebecca stared.
Then she walked out.
Eleanor followed.
William started to rise.
Daniel stopped him.
“Let Mom go.”
The room became quiet.
Jonathan opened his laptop.
“If this is accurate, we need to contact federal authorities.”
William nodded.
“I know.”
“Immediately.”
“I know.”
Daniel sat across from his father.
“Why now?”
William frowned.
“What?”
“Malcolm had you for fifteen years. Why remove me now?”
William looked toward Emma.
Emma noticed.
Daniel noticed too.
“Say it.”
William hesitated.
“Because you were going to audit him.”
Daniel’s brow tightened.
“I wasn’t.”
“Not intentionally.”
William stood and crossed to his desk.
He opened a drawer and removed a proposal.
Daniel recognized it.
“The modernization plan.”
“Yes.”
Emma looked between them.
Daniel explained.
“I proposed consolidating our financial systems. New external auditor. Automated controls.”
William nodded.
“It would expose historical transactions.”
“Northline.”
“And other entities.”
Emma understood the timing.
“So Daniel becoming CEO meant Malcolm’s records would be opened.”
“Yes.”
Daniel leaned back.
“And the marriage?”
William looked at Emma.
“That gave him leverage.”
Emma felt cold.
“How?”
“The board already had concerns.”
“About me.”
“About perception.”
Daniel slammed his palm against the table.
“Stop saying perception.”
William flinched.
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“They thought my wife was embarrassing.”
William did not answer.
“Say it.”
“Some did.”
“Did you?”
William stared at his son.
Emma almost wished Daniel had not asked.
Finally William said, “At first, yes.”
Emma looked down.
There it was.
She had known.
Still, hearing it hurt.
William turned toward her.
“I was wrong.”
Emma lifted her eyes.
“I don’t need you to say that because you’re scared now.”
“I’m not.”
“You laughed when Daniel told you he was proposing.”
William went still.
Daniel looked sharply at his father.
Emma continued.
“I heard you.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“You never told me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted one part of your family to still be yours.”
William looked crushed.
Emma did not enjoy it.
She simply felt tired.
“People think cruelty only counts when it’s shouted,” she said. “It doesn’t.”
William lowered his eyes.
“You’re right.”
Jonathan interrupted gently.
“We have a bigger immediate problem.”
He turned the laptop around.
The eight-million-dollar transfer had moved again.
Northline Strategic Holdings had sent funds through three entities.
Final recipient:
Carter Family Education Trust.
Daniel stared.
“That trust is for Rebecca’s children.”
Rebecca had no children.
Not yet.
William looked confused.
“I didn’t authorize that.”
Jonathan’s fingers moved over the keyboard.
“The transfer makes it look like Daniel stole company money and routed it to his own family.”
Emma’s stomach dropped.
“But why Rebecca?”
Jonathan looked at William.
“Because she’s trustee.”
Daniel stood.
“So Malcolm is framing both of us.”
Jonathan nodded.
“Potentially.”
Daniel’s phone vibrated.
An email.
Sender: Malcolm Reed.
Subject: We Should Talk.
Daniel opened it.
One sentence:
COME ALONE TO THE OFFICE AT 9 P.M. IF YOU WANT YOUR SISTER LEFT OUT OF THIS.
Emma looked at the clock.
8:23.
“No.”
Daniel did not answer.
“No,” Emma repeated.
“He wants me.”
“He wants you alone.”
“Exactly.”
“That’s not reassuring.”
Daniel grabbed his coat.
Jonathan stood.
“Do not go.”
“I’m not leaving Rebecca in this.”
“Then involve law enforcement.”
“The email doesn’t contain an explicit threat.”
Emma stepped in front of him.
“Daniel.”
He stopped.
“You told me strangers don’t get rooms in my head they didn’t earn.”
He looked confused.
“What?”
“Malcolm wants a room in yours.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Make him come into ours.”
Ten minutes later, they had a plan.
Daniel replied:
9 P.M. YOUR OFFICE.
Then Jonathan contacted federal investigators who had already been alerted.
Daniel wore a recording device.
Two agents positioned nearby.
Emma hated every second.
At 8:57, Daniel entered Carter Development headquarters.
The lobby was dark except for security lights.
He took the elevator to the thirty-second floor.
Malcolm’s office door was open.
He stepped inside.
Nobody was there.
“Malcolm?”
Silence.
Then the door behind him closed.
Daniel turned.
A voice came from the conference room.
Not Malcolm’s.
A woman’s.
“Daniel.”
He froze.
May you like
The conference room door opened.
And the person who stepped out was someone he had trusted his entire life.
