Chapter 7 - The Person Who Signed My Name

The message stayed on Rachel’s phone.

Rachel is not the only person who signed Mallory’s name.

The second signature came from someone inside your house...

I read it once.

Then again.

My hands felt numb.

Inside my house.

Not someone from North Form.

Not someone from Derek’s company.

Someone who had access to my life.

Someone who knew my handwriting.

Someone who could imitate me.

I looked around the room.

The couch where Derek and I used to watch movies.

The kitchen where he made coffee every morning.

The hallway where we hung family pictures.

Everything looked normal.

That was the terrifying part.

A person could destroy your life while standing inside the same walls where you built it.

“Who else knew about the paperwork?” I asked.

Rachel didn’t answer immediately.

She looked terrified.

Not of me.

Of the answer.

“Rachel.”

She swallowed.

“Your husband.”

“I know Derek knew.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I mean someone else.”

My heart started beating faster.

“Who?”

Rachel looked at Maisie’s room.

Then back at me.

“Someone close to him.”

“Who?”

Before she could answer, my phone rang.

Derek.

I stared at his name.

After everything I had learned, after every document, every lie, every hidden file…

A small part of me still wanted him to explain.

That part of me hated itself.

Because love didn’t disappear just because someone hurt you.

Sometimes it stayed there.

Waiting for a reason to forgive.

I answered.

“What do you want?”

There was a pause.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Almost disappointment.

“You’re talking to me like I’m a stranger.”

I looked at Rachel.

“You made me feel like one.”

“Mallory.”

His voice softened.

“I know you’re upset.”

I almost laughed.

Upset.

Like I had found an incorrect receipt.

Like this was a misunderstanding.

“You created a company behind my back.”

“I created an opportunity.”

“You used my pregnancy as research.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Derek said:

“Rachel is manipulating you.”

I looked at her.

“She showed me documents you wrote.”

“She showed you pieces.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means she’s not innocent.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Are you?”

Another silence.

That silence told me everything.

“Derek.”

His voice changed.

“What?”

“Did you sign my name?”

The line went completely quiet.

Not disconnected.

Not broken.

Quiet.

And in that moment, I knew.

Because if the answer was no, he would have said it immediately.

He would have laughed.

He would have been angry.

He would have called me crazy.

Instead, he stayed silent.

“Derek?”

“I need you to come home.”

I froze.

“No.”

“Mallory.”

“No.”

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.”

I looked at Rachel.

“Then tell me.”

Another pause.

Then he said:

“I’m trying to protect you.”

I ended the call.

I didn’t cry.

I didn’t scream.

I just stared at the phone.

Because I finally understood something.

Derek wasn’t scared that I found the truth.

He was scared of what else I might find.

Rachel sat across from me.

“He knows.”

“Knows what?”

“That you’re no longer believing him.”

I looked at the documents.

“Tell me about the second signature.”

Rachel took a deep breath.

“When North Form started, Derek needed approval for the research program.”

“From who?”

“A legal representative.”

“Sienna?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Someone older.”

“Who?”

Rachel hesitated.

“Vivian.”

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Derek’s mother.

The woman who came to my house with casseroles.

The woman who told me marriage required effort.

The woman who looked at my postpartum body and said Derek was worried about me.

“No.”

Rachel nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“That’s impossible.”

“I thought so too.”

“Why would she do that?”

Rachel looked at the paperwork.

“Because she believed Derek was protecting the family.”

I stared.

“Family?”

Rachel nodded.

“Vivian doesn’t see this as hurting you.”

“What does she see it as?”

Rachel looked at me.

“A correction.”

The word made me sick.

A correction.

Like I was something that needed fixing.

Like my body.

My emotions.

My motherhood.

My entire existence.

Was an inconvenience.

I stood up.

“I need to talk to her.”

Rachel grabbed the folder.

“Not without knowing everything.”

“I need answers.”

“You might not like them.”

I looked at her.

“I already don’t like the truth.”

Rachel was quiet.

Then she opened another file.

“This is the last document I have.”

I took it.

It was an internal email.

From Vivian.

To Derek.

The subject:

Family Transition.

My eyes moved down.

Derek,

The timing after the baby is ideal. Mallory will be emotionally vulnerable. She will either accept guidance or create conflict. Either way, we need control before she realizes what is happening.

I stopped reading.

My vision blurred.

Not from tears.

From disbelief.

His mother.

His mother knew.

She knew exactly what was happening.

Rachel watched me.

“I’m sorry.”

I put the paper down.

“No.”

I looked at her.

“I’m done being sorry.”

That was the first time I said it.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just clearly.

I was done.

I picked up my phone.

I called Vivian.

She answered after two rings.

“Mallory?”

Her voice was warm.

Almost loving.

It made my stomach turn.

“Vivian.”

“Is everything okay?”

“No.”

A pause.

“What happened?”

I looked at Rachel.

Then at the documents.

Then at my daughter’s room.

“You tell me.”

Silence.

“What do you mean?”

“I found North Form.”

Another pause.

Short.

But real.

Then Vivian sighed.

“Mallory…”

That sigh.

The same kind Derek used.

The same way of preparing me to feel unreasonable.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.”

My entire body went still.

Not because she admitted it.

Because she didn’t deny it.

“What did you say?”

“I said you weren’t supposed to find it yet.”

Yet.

That word.

I gripped the phone.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“I have always tried to do what was best for Derek.”

I closed my eyes.

“What about me?”

A pause.

“You were overwhelmed.”

“I was recovering from surgery.”

“You were struggling.”

“I was becoming a mother.”

“And Derek was losing himself.”

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You think this was about helping him?”

“Yes.”

Vivian’s voice became colder.

“You don’t understand men.”

I felt something inside me become completely still.

“Goodbye, Vivian.”

“Mallory, wait.”

I stopped.

Because her voice changed.

The confidence disappeared.

“What?”

“You need to understand one thing.”

“What?”

“He didn’t start this.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Derek didn’t create North Form.”

I looked at Rachel.

She was watching me.

“Then who did?”

Vivian didn’t answer.

“Vivian.”

Her voice dropped.

“Ask Derek who introduced him to Sienna.”

The call ended.

I stood there.

Frozen.

Because suddenly everything changed.

Derek.

Sienna.

Rachel.

Vivian.

They were all pieces.

But someone else had moved them.

Someone else had started the game.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Derek and Sienna meeting at a restaurant.

The date was two years earlier.

Before Maisie.

Before my pregnancy.

Before North Form.

Below the picture was a message.

You have been looking at the wrong woman.

Another message appeared.

Ask Derek who introduced Sienna to him.

May you like

Then a final message arrived.

Ask him about the person who was sitting at the table with them...
