Chapter 6 - The Truth Behind the Ledger

Nobody moved.

Lucia stood beside Ethan with tears on her face.

Paolo whispered her name.

“Dad.”

He nearly stepped forward.

Ethan lifted the gun.

“Don’t.”

Paolo stopped.

Marcelo’s eyes remained on Ethan.

“You kidnapped Lucia.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Renato did.”

“Yet she’s standing beside you.”

“I took her from him.”

Adrian Vale laughed from the pew.

“That is almost true.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

Marcelo looked at Vale.

“Talk.”

Ethan aimed the gun at him.

“Don’t.”

Marcelo understood.

Vale knew something Ethan did not want said.

“Put the gun down,” Elena whispered.

Ethan looked at her.

“Elena.”

“You used me.”

“No.”

“Vale says you did.”

“Vale lies.”

“You lied.”

“That’s different.”

She almost laughed.

“How?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

Marcelo’s expression hardened.

People who harmed others loved that sentence.

“From what?” Elena asked.

Ethan’s voice lowered.

“Renato.”

Vale interrupted.

“Wrong again.”

Ethan pointed the gun toward him.

Marcelo spoke.

“If you kill him, I kill you.”

Ethan looked at Marcelo.

“You don’t have a weapon.”

Tomas shifted slightly.

Ethan noticed.

“Neither does he.”

Marcelo smiled faintly.

“I wasn’t talking about tonight.”

The threat settled into the room.

Ethan believed it.

Marcelo could see that.

Elena stepped forward.

“Tell me the truth.”

Ethan stared at her.

Then lowered the gun a fraction.

“I found Renato’s network two years ago.”

“While working for Vale?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you report it?”

“To whom?”

“Police.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Half the names in that ledger own the police.”

Marcelo said, “So you decided to become a hero?”

“No.”

“At least we’re making progress.”

Ethan looked at Elena again.

“I wanted the ledger.”

“For evidence?”

“Yes.”

Vale laughed.

“No.”

Ethan snapped, “Shut up.”

Vale leaned back painfully.

“He wanted the accounts.”

Elena frowned.

“What?”

Vale continued.

“The ledger doesn’t just record payments.”

Ethan’s face tightened.

“It includes access codes to dormant funds.”

Marcelo looked at him.

“How much?”

Vale answered.

“Two hundred and forty million euros.”

Silence.

Elena stared at Ethan.

“You were going to steal it.”

Ethan said nothing.

That was answer enough.

Her face changed.

Not heartbreak.

Something colder.

“You hurt me for money.”

“I needed the key.”

“You broke my shoulder for money.”

“I lost control.”

Marcelo’s voice cut in.

“No. You made a choice.”

Ethan turned toward him.

“You think you’re better?”

“No.”

Marcelo’s answer surprised everyone.

“I think people like us become dangerous when we pretend our choices were accidents.”

Ethan looked away.

Elena’s eyes stayed on him.

“Did you love me?”

He hesitated.

She nodded once.

“That’s what I thought.”

Ethan stepped toward her.

“Elena—”

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

Lucia suddenly moved.

She kicked Ethan behind the knee.

The gun jerked.

Tomas lunged.

A shot exploded.

The bullet hit a stone column.

Marcelo slammed Ethan against the pew.

The gun slid across the floor.

Paolo grabbed Lucia and pulled her away.

Tomas restrained Ethan.

Adrian Vale laughed weakly.

Marcelo turned.

“Why are you smiling?”

“Because Renato isn’t here.”

Marcelo froze.

“What?”

Vale looked toward the chapel doors.

“This was a distraction.”

Marcelo’s phone rang.

Sofia.

He answered.

Her voice was frantic.

“Marcelo.”

“What happened?”

“Daniel is gone.”

Elena went white.

“No.”

Marcelo put the call on speaker.

Sofia continued.

“A guard took him. We thought he was Paolo’s replacement.”

Marcelo looked at Paolo.

Paolo shook his head.

“Renato,” he said.

Sofia’s voice cracked.

“He left something.”

“What?”

“A note.”

“Read it.”

Sofia hesitated.

Then:

THE SON FOR THE LEDGER.

Elena grabbed Marcelo’s arm.

“We have to go.”

Marcelo looked at Ethan.

“Where would Renato take him?”

Ethan shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Marcelo grabbed him by the jacket.

“Think.”

“I don’t know!”

Vale spoke.

“I do.”

Everyone turned.

Marcelo released Ethan.

“Where?”

Vale looked exhausted.

“The old Castellane shipping terminal.”

Marcelo’s expression changed.

“That facility was closed.”

“Renato reopened part of it.”

“Why?”

“Because underneath the terminal is an archive.”

Marcelo frowned.

“What archive?”

“Your father’s.”

Marcelo stared.

Vale continued.

“Your father collected evidence for years. The ledger is only part of it.”

Elena understood.

“Renato wants everything.”

“Yes.”

“And Daniel?”

“Leverage.”

They moved quickly.

Tomas took Ethan into custody.

Paolo stayed with Lucia.

Vale was left under guard and medical supervision.

Marcelo and Elena headed toward the terminal.

In the car, Elena stared straight ahead.

“This is my fault.”

“No.”

“If I hadn’t taken the key—”

“Renato would still exist.”

“He has Daniel because of me.”

“He has Daniel because he chooses to take children hostage.”

She looked at Marcelo.

“You sound very certain.”

“I am.”

“How?”

“Because guilt is useful to men like Renato.”

Marcelo’s voice was quiet.

“They make you believe their choices are consequences of yours.”

Elena looked at him.

“They aren’t.”

The terminal appeared ahead.

Rusting cranes.

Dark warehouses.

Abandoned rail lines.

Marcelo’s men surrounded the perimeter.

Tomas called.

“No visible guards.”

“That means there are guards.”

“Yes.”

Marcelo looked at Elena.

“You stay in the car.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

“If Daniel sees me, he’ll stay calm.”

“And if Renato sees you?”

“He already wants me.”

Marcelo cursed softly.

Then handed her a small earpiece.

“You do exactly what I say.”

She nodded.

They entered the terminal.

The main warehouse was dark.

A single work light shone near the center.

Daniel sat in a chair.

Untied.

Renato stood behind him.

He wore a charcoal suit.

No weapon visible.

“Elena!”

Daniel tried to stand.

Renato placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Stay.”

Marcelo stepped forward.

“Let him go.”

Renato smiled.

“My nephew.”

“You murdered my father.”

The smile faded.

“Straight to business.”

“I have the recording.”

“That proves nothing.”

“I have the ledger.”

Renato’s eyes shifted toward Elena.

“That belongs to me.”

Marcelo laughed softly.

“No.”

Renato’s face tightened.

Marcelo continued.

“You hid behind my father’s accounts for years.”

“I built what he was too weak to build.”

“You trafficked people.”

“I built leverage.”

“You murdered him.”

“He chose sentiment over survival.”

Marcelo’s voice turned cold.

“Let Daniel go.”

“Give me the ledger.”

“No.”

Elena looked at Marcelo.

Renato smiled.

“Then the boy dies.”

Daniel went pale.

Marcelo did not react.

Renato reached inside his jacket.

Elena stepped forward.

“I have the ledger.”

Renato paused.

Marcelo turned sharply.

“Elena.”

She ignored him.

“I memorized the access codes.”

Renato’s eyes narrowed.

“That’s impossible.”

“I worked with the archive for months.”

She took another step.

“You kill Daniel, you never access the accounts.”

Renato studied her.

Daniel looked terrified.

Marcelo understood what Elena was doing.

Buying time.

He saw movement high above.

Tomas’s men.

Good.

Renato pulled a gun.

Pointed it at Elena.

Marcelo’s entire body changed.

“Lower it.”

Renato smiled.

“You care about her.”

Marcelo said nothing.

“That’s interesting.”

“Lower the gun.”

“You sound like your father.”

Marcelo’s eyes went cold.

“That should frighten you.”

A red laser appeared briefly on Renato’s chest.

He noticed.

Too late.

He grabbed Daniel.

Dragged him backward.

The gun moved toward the boy.

Elena screamed, “Daniel!”

A shot rang out.

Renato’s weapon flew from his hand.

He stumbled.

Tomas’s men rushed in.

Daniel ran.

Elena caught him.

Marcelo crossed the distance to Renato.

His uncle lay against a crate, clutching his injured hand.

Marcelo stood over him.

Renato looked up.

“Do it.”

Marcelo’s expression remained still.

“Kill me.”

“No.”

Renato laughed.

“You think that makes you different?”

Marcelo crouched.

“No.”

He looked directly into his uncle’s eyes.

“What makes me different is that you’re going to live long enough to watch everything you built disappear.”

Police vehicles approached outside.

Not local police.

Federal investigators.

Sofia had sent copies of the evidence to three international agencies simultaneously.

Renato’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Marcelo stood.

Then Daniel spoke from behind Elena.

“Marcelo?”

He turned.

Daniel held something in his hand.

A small metal flash drive.

“I found this under the chair.”

Marcelo walked over.

A handwritten label was attached.

M.C.

Marcelo looked toward Renato.

Renato’s fear deepened.

“Don’t open that.”

Marcelo stared at the drive.

“Why?”

Renato said nothing.

Then a voice came through Marcelo’s earpiece.

Tomas.

“We found the hidden archive.”

Marcelo looked toward the far end of the warehouse.

A steel door had opened.

May you like

Behind it was a staircase descending underground.

And at the bottom, someone had just turned on the lights.
