Chapter 6 - The Door Beneath the Penthouse

Marcus kept the weapon lowered.
Dominic did not move.
Elena clutched Maria’s letter.
Adrian stepped in front of her.
Marcus looked exhausted.
Elena frowned.
“There is no rest.”
“Back.”
She turned the paper over.
Under the fold was another sentence.
MARCUS WILL HAVE TO PRETEND.
Dominic looked at Marcus.
Marcus exhaled.
“I really hate your family.”
Adrian lowered his shoulders.
Elena almost laughed from relief.
Dominic did not.
“You could have warned me.”
“No. Calder has someone watching my communications.”
“So the gun?”
“Performance.”
Dominic glanced toward the entrance.
“For whom?”
Marcus nodded toward a black dome camera in the corner.
“Calder hacked the facility ten minutes ago.”
Elena understood.
“He thinks you’re taking us.”
“Yes.”
Dominic looked at the camera.
Then at Marcus.
“Give him what he expects.”
Marcus raised the weapon.
Elena flinched despite knowing the truth.
Dominic allowed Marcus to escort all three into the SUV.
They drove toward Pier 48.
Rain had begun.
Calder waited inside an abandoned shipping warehouse near the river.
Maria lay in a portable hospital bed beside him.
Elena saw her through the open loading door.
“Mom.”
Dominic caught her arm.
“Wait.”
Marcus approached first.
Calder smiled.
“You finally learned which side pays better.”
Marcus said nothing.
Calder looked at Dominic.
“Ledger.”
Dominic held up the case.
“Maria first.”
“No.”
“Elena goes to her.”
“No.”
“Then we leave.”
Calder laughed.
“You think you have options?”
Dominic’s voice stayed calm.
“I always have options.”
Calder’s expression changed.
For twenty years, he had survived around the Mercer family by understanding power.
Dominic’s calm worried him more than shouting would have.
“Bring the case.”
Dominic walked forward.
Marcus remained behind him.
Elena and Adrian waited near the entrance.
Then Maria opened her eyes.
“Elena?”
Elena forgot every plan.
“Mom!”
She ran.
Calder turned.
Dominic moved faster.
He slammed the case into Calder’s arm.
Marcus crossed the distance.
Adrian reached Maria.
Everything happened in seconds.
No dramatic exchange of gunfire.
No heroic speech.
Just confusion.
Calder stumbled.
Marcus forced his weapon away.
Dominic pinned him against a support column.
Elena reached her mother.
Maria touched her face.
“You came.”
“Of course I came.”
“You shouldn’t have.”
“Please don’t start.”
Maria smiled weakly.
Even now.
Even here.
“You always were stubborn.”
“So were you.”
Elena hugged her carefully.
Adrian stopped several feet away.
Maria saw him.
Her smile vanished.
“Thomas.”
Adrian’s face broke.
“Maria.”
“You promised you’d stay away.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
“To stop running.”
Calder laughed from the floor where Marcus restrained him.
“How touching.”
Dominic looked down.
Calder smiled.
“You still don’t understand.”
Dominic said nothing.
Calder continued.
“The ledger is worthless.”
“Then you wasted a lot of effort.”
“I didn’t want the ledger.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
Calder looked toward Elena.
“I wanted the tape.”
Elena felt the cassette in her pocket.
Dominic saw Calder’s gaze.
“So you knew.”
“Maria was always sentimental.”
Maria struggled upright.
“You leave her out of this.”
Calder smiled.
“You spent twenty-eight years keeping Mercer secrets and still think requests matter?”
Elena stood.
“You’re done.”
Calder looked at her.
“You sound like Dominic.”
“That’s becoming less insulting.”
Despite everything, Dominic looked at her.
Calder’s smile faded.
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Calder looked at Marcus.
“You called police?”
“No.”
Dominic did.
Everyone looked at him.
Calder laughed.
“Since when does Dominic Mercer call police?”
“Since I stopped protecting dead men.”
Calder’s face hardened.
“You think the ledger only implicates your father?”
“I know it implicates me too.”
Elena stared at him.
Dominic continued.
“I signed documents when I was twenty-one. I moved funds I didn’t understand. I benefited from companies built with dirty money.”
Calder smiled.
“So you’ll destroy yourself.”
“If necessary.”
Elena watched Dominic.
This man, feared across New York, was choosing to expose his own empire rather than preserve it.
Calder had not expected that.
Neither had she.
Police entered moments later.
Marcus surrendered his weapon.
Calder was taken into custody.
Maria was transported back to St. Catherine’s.
Adrian gave a statement.
Vivienne turned over her father’s records.
For twelve hours, it seemed over.
Then Maria asked to speak with Dominic alone.
Elena refused to leave completely.
She waited outside the hospital room.
Through the partially open door, she heard Maria say:
“Your mother is alive.”
Dominic did not answer.
Maria continued.
“But Calder never controlled where she was.”
“Who did?”
“Your father built another place beneath Mercer Tower.”
Dominic frowned.
“There is nothing beneath the garage.”
“There is.”
“You’ve been there?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The night your father died.”
Dominic went still.
Maria whispered something Elena could not hear.
Dominic stepped back from the bed.
Then he opened the door.
His face had changed.
Elena stood.
“What?”
Dominic looked at her.
“My mother may have been under my building this entire time.”
Within an hour, Dominic, Elena, Marcus, and Adrian were back at Mercer Tower.
Blueprints showed nothing below level B6.
Maria had given them a sequence of elevator commands.
Dominic entered them.
The elevator descended past B6.
B7.
B8.
Then stopped.
The doors opened onto a dark corridor.
At the far end stood a single steel door.
Dominic approached.
His hand hovered above the handle.
Elena stood beside him.
“You don’t have to do this alone.”
Dominic looked at her.
“I know.”
He opened the door.
A lamp was burning inside.
Someone had been there moments earlier.
On a table sat a fresh cup of tea.
Beside it was a photograph of Dominic taken that morning.
Then a woman’s voice came from the darkness.
“Dominic?”
He froze.
May you like
The lamp clicked on.
And the woman he had buried twelve years earlier stepped into the light.
