Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Walked Into The Lion’s Den

A woman stood beside a mountain shuttle holding a suitcase, whispering: "I’m here to see Dominic Hale."
The most feared man in Montana discovered a stranger had arrived carrying a sealed investigation file.
Inside the file was one sentence written by someone who should have been dead: "Trust no one inside the ridge."
Dominic Hale suddenly realized this woman was not there for a job interview.
I had expected many things when I arrived at the Hale Ridge property.
Suspicion.
Cold stares.
Questions.
But I had not expected laughter.
The moment my boots touched the frozen ground outside the shuttle, I felt every pair of eyes turn toward me.
The mountain air was sharp, but the tension around that old wooden lodge was even colder.
I tightened my grip around my suitcase and looked at the group of men standing near the entrance.
They were not workers.
They were not ordinary ranch hands.
I knew men like them.
Men who stood too still.
Men who watched every movement.
Men who carried themselves like they were prepared for something to happen at any second.
One of them leaned against an old truck, looked me up and down, and laughed.
A few others joined him.
The man shook his head.
"Dominic finally got desperate enough to hire someone like her?"
His friends laughed louder.
I looked down at my beige coat, my clean boots, and the suitcase beside me.
I understood why they thought I did not belong.
They saw a woman who looked like she had stepped out of a city office.
They saw someone too polished for a place where survival mattered more than appearances.
What they did not see was the reason I was there.
I was not hired because I was easy to underestimate.
I was hired because everyone else had failed.
I had spent the last three years finding things people wanted buried.
Missing documents.
Hidden accounts.
False identities.
Secrets powerful people thought were impossible to uncover.
And Dominic Hale had one secret that was about to cost him everything.
I picked up my suitcase.
I ignored the laughter.
That bothered them more than if I had argued.
The men expected anger.
They expected me to defend myself.
Instead, I simply walked toward the lodge.
That was when the laughter slowly disappeared.
Because someone else had stepped outside.
Dominic Hale.
I had heard his name long before I ever saw his face.
People described him differently depending on who was speaking.
To some, he was a businessman who controlled half the mountain region.
To others, he was a man who solved problems before anyone knew there was a problem.
But every story had one thing in common.
Nobody crossed Dominic Hale.
He stood at the top of the wooden steps wearing a black jacket, his expression unreadable.
He was not angry.
He was studying me.
Like he was trying to understand why someone like me had accepted his offer.
I stopped several feet away.
Neither of us spoke.
The men behind me suddenly became quiet.
Dominic looked at my suitcase.
Then he looked at my eyes.
"You came alone?"
His voice was calm.
"Yes."
"Nobody followed you?"
"No."
A slight change appeared on his face.
Not trust.
Not yet.
But interest.
"You understand where you are?"
I looked around the mountain ridge.
The isolated road.
The tall trees.
The men watching from every direction.
Then I looked back at him.
"Exactly."
One of the men behind him laughed quietly.
"She has no idea what she walked into."
I turned toward him.
"I know more than you think."
The man stopped smiling.
Dominic noticed.
That was the first moment I saw something change in his expression.
He was not impressed by confidence.
He was impressed because I had not said those words like a threat.
I had said them like a fact.
Inside my suitcase was everything I had spent weeks collecting.
Photos.
Financial records.
Names.
A timeline.
And one piece of information that could destroy the foundation Dominic Hale had built.
But before I could give it to him, I needed to know one thing.
Whether he was the person I was supposed to protect.
Or the person I was supposed to expose.
Dominic stepped down from the stairs.
"Come inside."
I followed him into the lodge.
The inside was nothing like I expected.
It was not luxurious.
It was controlled.
Everything had a purpose.
Every person had a position.
Every camera had a blind spot.
I noticed all of it.
Dominic noticed me noticing.
"You always analyze every room you enter?"
"Only rooms where people are hiding something."
For the first time, his expression almost changed.
Almost.
He walked toward a large wooden table in the center of the room.
A black folder was already waiting there.
My name was written on it.
I stopped.
"I didn't give you permission to open my file."
Dominic looked at me.
"You didn't give me permission to investigate you either."
I stared at him.
"So you did."
"I had to know who was coming here."
"And what did you find?"
Silence.
The men in the room watched carefully.
Dominic opened the folder.
Inside were copies of my background records.
My previous cases.
My history.
But something was missing.
He looked at me.
"Your last investigation isn't here."
I said nothing.
Because that was intentional.
Nobody knew about my last investigation.
Nobody except the person who hired me.
Dominic closed the folder.
"Why hide it?"
"Because the person who hired me told me not to trust anyone."
The room became silent.
A few men exchanged looks.
Dominic leaned forward slightly.
"Who hired you?"
I reached into my suitcase.
The room immediately changed.
Several men moved their hands toward their jackets.
I noticed.
Dominic noticed too.
"Relax."
His voice stopped them.
I pulled out a small envelope.
No name.
No address.
Only one symbol written on the front.
Dominic saw it.
And for the first time since I arrived, his confidence disappeared.
"You found that where?"
I looked at him.
"At the place where your missing accountant disappeared."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone in the room knew the name.
The accountant who vanished three months earlier.
The man who supposedly stole money and ran.
The man whose disappearance ended with no answers.
Dominic slowly reached for the envelope.
But before his fingers touched it, I pulled it back.
"Before you open this, you need to answer one question."
His eyes narrowed.
"What question?"
I looked directly at him.
"Did you really believe your accountant betrayed you?"
The silence that followed was different.
Not confusion.
Fear.
Because Dominic Hale had built his entire empire believing one person had turned against him.
But I was standing in front of him telling him that person might never have been the enemy.
Dominic opened his mouth to respond.
Then every light inside the lodge suddenly went out.
The room fell completely dark.
A second later, every phone on the table received the same message.
One by one, the screens lit up.
Dominic picked up the nearest phone.
His face changed when he read it.
I stepped closer.
"What does it say?"
He looked at me.
Then at the message.
Three words appeared on the screen.
"She knows everything."
Dominic slowly turned toward the locked entrance door.
May you like
Because the message had not been sent from outside.
It had been sent from inside the lodge.
