Chapter 3 - THE TRUTH REVEALED

The flashing red and blue lights of state police cruisers cut through the heavy fog surrounding Oakridge Manor, painting the snow-covered estate in vibrant hues of justice. The front hall was packed with officers, detectives, and the exhausted remnants of the Vance family.
Julian sat on the bottom step of the grand staircase, his head in his hands, completely broken as detectives placed him under arrest for wire fraud and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Victoria stood in the corner, sobbing hysterically as her high-priced lawyers failed to prevent the officers from impounding her financial records.
In the center of the hall, Marcus was already in handcuffs, his face pale and hollow as he was led toward the door. The evidence against him was indisputable—the concealed digitalis vials, the altered prescriptions, and the video recording captured by Arthur’s hidden pinhole camera tucked inside the vintage clock above his bed.
As the officers led Marcus past Evelyn, he stopped, staring at her with bitter, defeat-filled eyes. "You played us all," he hissed under his breath. "From the very beginning. You knew I was doing it, didn't you? You let me poison him!"
Evelyn looked down at him with a mixture of pity and unyielding resolve. "I tried to save him, Marcus. I swapped his medication two weeks before he died. What killed your father wasn't poison. It was the heart failure he had suffered from for years, accelerated by the heartbreak of knowing his own son wanted him dead."
Marcus stared at her, completely stunned, before the officers pulled him out into the freezing rain.
When the house finally grew quiet, only Evelyn, Sarah, and Mr. Harrison remained in the grand study. Sunlight was beginning to break through the dark storm clouds, casting golden rays across the room.
"It's over, isn't it?" Sarah asked softly, sitting on the plush leather sofa, emotionally drained.
"The legal storm is over," Mr. Harrison said, closing his briefcase with a crisp metallic snap. "With Marcus convicted of attempted murder and corporate sabotage, and Julian facing federal charges for embezzlement, the Vance estate is secure. As per Arthur’s true, unamended final will, fifty percent of the company’s controlling shares go into an independent charitable trust managed by Sarah to support healthcare workers and elder care facilities."
Sarah looked up, stunned. "And the other fifty percent?"
Mr. Harrison smiled faintly, bowing his head toward Evelyn. "The remaining fifty percent, along with Oakridge Manor and all liquid assets, belongs entirely to Mrs. Evelyn Vance."
Sarah looked at Evelyn, a wave of understanding washing over her. "You never wanted revenge on the family, did you? You were protecting Arthur’s legacy from being torn apart by greed."
Evelyn walked over to the large bay window, looking out over the misty grounds of the estate. A subtle, warm smile appeared on her face for the first time in months.
"Arthur gave me a second chance at life when the world thought I was gone," Evelyn said softly, her voice echoing with warmth and quiet strength. "He knew his children had lost their way to greed long ago. He asked me to ensure that his life's work went to people who actually cared about human lives, not just numbers on a balance sheet."

She turned back to Sarah, extending a warm, steady hand. "We have a lot of work to do, Sarah. Vance Logistics is going to rebuild, and this time, it’s going to build something that actually matters."
Sarah took Evelyn's hand, wiping a tear from her cheek as a genuine smile spread across her face. The dark shadows that had hung over Oakridge Manor for decades had finally lifted, giving way to a bright, unstoppable new dawn.
