Chapter 2 - The Hidden Legacy

For three months, I was the most hated woman in our city.
The story leaked to local blogs and social media within forty-eight hours. Sensationalized headlines popped up everywhere: “Billionaire CEO Evicts Pregnant Daughter-In-Law into Snowstorm.” People commented by the thousands, calling me a heartless tyrant, a bitter old hag, and a monster who deserved to die alone. Boycotts were called against Vane Enterprises stores. Shares dipped. My old friends from the country club stopped calling.
I endured it all in absolute silence.
While the world condemned me, Julian moved into a small rented apartment with Victoria and Brandon—whom Victoria had conveniently brought along as her ""unpaid personal manager"" to assist with her ""stressful situation."" Julian took a low-paying job at a local logistics firm, working twelve-hour shifts to support Victoria and pay for her expensive prenatal appointments, luxury clothes, and private clinic fees. He refused to answer my phone calls, my letters, or my text messages. He hated me.
Every night, I sat alone in the massive, quiet library of Oakridge Manor, staring at a picture of Julian when he was seven years old, holding a wooden sailboat we built together. The pain in my chest was an unrelenting, physical ache. But I couldn't afford to break down. I had a war to win.
While Victoria thought she had successfully manipulated Julian into abandoning his wealth to prove his devotion, I was working behind the scenes with a team of elite private investigators and forensic accountants.
By month four, the truth began to unspool.
""Mrs. Vane,"" my head investigator, Marcus, said as he laid a thick leather folder on my desk. ""You were right. 'Victoria Miller' doesn't exist. Her real name is Vanessa Vance. She’s a professional romance scammer who has operated in Florida, Texas, and Illinois.""
I opened the folder. Photographs of Victoria—or Vanessa—with three different wealthy, elderly men filled the pages.
""She targets wealthy young men with naive dispositions or elderly widowers,"" Marcus explained. ""She gets them to put her on titles, transfer stock options, or grant power of attorney, and then she vanishes. Brandon isn't her financial advisor—he’s her husband. They’ve been legally married for seven years.""
My knuckles turned white against the wooden desk. ""And the baby?""
Marcus handed me a document from a private clinic in Miami. ""She underwent an IVF procedure eight months ago using Brandon’s genetic material. She targeted your son specifically because she knew Vane Enterprises was slated to go public this year, making Julian's share worth over forty million dollars.""
""She wanted him to break ties with me,"" I whispered, the puzzle pieces falling perfectly into place. ""She knew I would see through her. If she alienated Julian from me, she could manipulate him into taking his share of the advance trust inheritance early out of anger, sign over power of attorney to her, and empty the accounts before he ever realized what happened.""
""Exactly,"" Marcus said. ""And it’s happening right now. Yesterday, Julian filed a legal petition to claim his irrevocable family trust distribution early, citing financial hardship and the upcoming birth of his child.""
I closed my eyes, taking a slow, deep breath. ""He’s signing the papers this Friday, isn't he?""
""Yes. At the city probate court. Brandon and Victoria will be there.""
""Good,"" I said, opening my eyes. ""It’s time to settle the estate.""
The following Friday morning was cold and grey. The county courthouse sat in the heart of downtown, its grey stone pillars looking imposing against the overcast sky.
I entered the grand courtroom wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit, accompanied by my legal counsel, Mr. Evelyn, and two plainclothes officers.
Julian was already sitting at the plaintiff's table. He looked exhausted. Dark circles hung under his hollow eyes, his hair was unkempt, and his suit looked worn out. Working grueling hours while catering to Victoria’s endless demands had taken a heavy toll on him. Victoria sat beside him, dressed in an elegant maternity dress, dabbing at her eyes with a tissue to appear frail and victimized. Brandon sat directly behind them, holding a briefcase, looking like a vulture waiting for a feast.
When Julian saw me walk in, his posture went rigid. He stood up, anger flaring in his tired eyes.
""What are you doing here, Mom?"" Julian asked coldly. ""Haven't you done enough? You threw us out. You tried to ruin my life. Now I’m just taking what my father left for me so I can protect my family. Leave us alone.""
""Julian,"" I said gently, my heart bleeding for him. ""I am here because I love you. I have always loved you.""
""Don't say that!"" Julian snapped, his voice cracking with emotion. ""If you loved me, you wouldn't have treated Victoria like trash! You wouldn't have humiliated us in front of everyone! She’s the only person who stayed by my side when I had nothing!""
Victoria reached up, taking Julian’s hand, looking up at him with tearful devotion. ""It’s okay, honey,"" she whispered loudly enough for the judge to hear. ""She just wants to control you. Don't let her get to you.""
The judge slammed his gavel. ""Order in the court. We are here to review the early release of the Vane Family Irrevocable Trust funds to Julian Vane. Mrs. Margaret Vane, as the sole trustee, do you have a formal objection?""
I stepped up to the bench. ""Your Honor, I do not object to the release of funds. However, before any papers are executed, I am exercising my right under Section 4 of the Vane Corporate Bylaws to present vital evidence regarding the beneficiaries of this trust.""
The judge frowned. ""What evidence?""
I nodded to Mr. Evelyn, who stepped forward and handed four sealed manila envelopes to the court bailiff—one for the judge, one for Julian, one for Victoria, and one for Brandon.
""What is this nonsense?!"" Victoria cried out, standing up. ""Your Honor, she’s just trying to delay the proceeding! She’s mentally unstable!""
""Sit down, Ms. Miller,"" the judge ordered strictly.
Julian opened his envelope with trembling hands. Inside were color photographs, legal marriage certificates from Nevada, police records from two different states, and the medical clinic records from Miami.
As Julian scanned the pages, the color completely drained from his face. His hands began to shake violently.
""What... what is this?"" Julian whispered, looking at Victoria, his voice barely audible. ""Vanessa Vance? Married to... Brandon?""
Victoria’s face went corpse-pale. Her eyes darted frantically toward Brandon, who immediately stood up, grabbing his briefcase, making a sudden move toward the courtroom doors.
""Officers, stop that man,"" I said calmly.
Two plainclothes officers immediately blocked the exit, grabbing Brandon by the arms and forcing him back into his chair.
""Julian... baby, listen to me! It’s a lie! She forged those!"" Victoria panicked, her sweet voice instantly transforming into a sharp, desperate screech as she grabbed Julian’s arm. ""She paid off doctors! She wants to divide us because she hates me!""
""Julian,"" I spoke softly, stepping closer to my son. ""Turn to page four.""
Julian turned the page with trembling fingers. It was a certified paternity DNA report from the clinic, showing a 99.9% match between the unborn child and Brandon Vance.
Julian dropped the paper. He stared at Victoria as if he were looking at a complete stranger—a monster disguised as a human being. The illusions, the lies, the months of exhaustion and emotional manipulation shattered in a single, silent second.
""You..."" Julian choked out, tears finally streaming down his face. ""The baby... isn't mine?""
Victoria backed away, her mask completely slipping. Her eyes turned dark, bitter, and venomous.
""You naive little idiot,"" Victoria spat, dropping all pretenses of the fragile pregnant victim. ""Did you really think a woman like me would actually love a pathetic, weak mama’s boy like you? You were supposed to sign the trust over today! You ruined everything!""
""Vanessa Vance, Brandon Vance,"" the judge said, his voice thundering through the courtroom. ""You are under arrest for grand larceny attempt, fraud, and identity deception. Bailiffs, detain them immediately!""
As the handcuffs clicked around Victoria’s wrists, she glared at me with absolute fury. ""You ruined me, you old witch!"" she screamed as she was hauled away. ""You knew all along!""
I looked at her, calm and unbothered. ""I told you, Victoria. My time isn't over. But yours is.""
The courtroom emptied out, leaving only the soft hum of the fluorescent lights. Julian stood in the middle of the room, looking utterly destroyed, his shoulders slouched, weeping silently into his hands.
I walked over to my son, wrapped my arms around him, and pulled him into my chest.
May you like
""I’m sorry, Mom,"" Julian sobbed bitterly, burying his face in my shoulder. ""I’m so sorry... I called you a monster. I chose her over you. I threw away my life for a lie...""
""Shh,"" I whispered, rubbing his back as I had done when he was a little boy. ""You didn't throw anything away, my son. You were blinded by love, and that is not a crime. I’m your mother. I will always protect you.""
