Chapter 4 - The Name Hidden In The Phone

The name on Ethan’s phone screen made my stomach drop.

Not because I recognized it.

Because I did.

The person calling him was the last person I expected.

My own father.

I stared at the screen.

“James Whitmore.”

My father’s name.

A man who had not spoken to Ethan in almost three years.

A man who had always told me he never trusted my husband.

A man I thought was simply being protective.

Now he was calling Ethan.

In secret.

I looked at Ethan’s face.

For the first time since I walked into the hospital, he looked genuinely afraid.

Not guilty.

Not defensive.

Afraid.

He quickly turned the phone away and rejected the call.

That small movement told me everything.

Whatever was happening was bigger than Sophia.

Bigger than Claire.

Bigger than an affair.

“What does my father have to do with this?” I asked.

Ethan didn’t answer.

“Madison.”

“No.”

My voice surprised both of us.

Because it wasn’t emotional.

It wasn’t broken.

It was calm.

“What does my father have to do with this?”

The hallway around us continued moving.

Doctors walked past.

Nurses pushed carts.

Patients waited in chairs.

The entire hospital continued functioning while my marriage fell apart in front of me.

Ethan looked around.

“Not here.”

I almost laughed.

That was his first instinct.

Control the location.

Control the conversation.

Control the damage.

“You’ve spent fifteen years deciding what I should know,” I said quietly. “I think I deserve to choose where this conversation happens.”

His jaw tightened.

For a moment, I saw the old Ethan.

The confident doctor.

The man who always knew what to say.

Then his expression changed.

“You need to understand something.”

“What?”

“Not everything you think you know is true.”

I looked at him.

“That sounds exactly like something someone says when they’re hiding the truth.”

He looked away.

And that was the answer.

I walked past him.

I didn’t wait for permission.

I didn’t ask him to follow.

Because something inside me had changed.

Yesterday, I was a wife trying to save her marriage.

Today, I was a woman trying to uncover why her entire life had been built on secrets.

I drove straight to my father’s house.

The entire way there, my mind replayed everything.

The airport.

The flowers.

Sophia.

Claire.

The hospital.

Ethan’s fear.

My father’s name.

None of it made sense.

Until I remembered something.

A conversation from six months ago.

My father had been sitting at my kitchen table.

He had looked at my wedding photo hanging on the wall.

Then he said something strange.

“Madison, promise me something.”

I laughed.

“What?”

“If you ever feel like something is wrong, don’t ignore it just because everyone tells you everything is fine.”

At the time, I thought he was talking about marriage.

Now I wondered if he knew.

When I arrived at his house, I didn’t knock.

I used the spare key.

“Dad?”

No answer.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

“Dad?”

I walked through the living room.

Everything looked normal.

His books were on the shelf.

His coffee mug was on the table.

His newspaper was folded neatly beside the chair.

Then I noticed something.

A drawer near his desk was slightly open.

I had never seen it open before.

Inside was a folder.

My name was written on it.

MADISON CARTER.

My hands froze.

I slowly pulled it out.

Inside were documents.

Hospital records.

Emails.

Photographs.

And one name appeared over and over again.

Ethan Carter.

My breathing became shallow.

I turned the first page.

It was an email.

From my father.

To someone named Daniel Reeves.

The date was three years earlier.

The message was short.

“Ethan cannot know that Madison has seen the documents. Keep her away from the research files.”

My heart stopped.

Research files.

What research files?

I turned another page.

A photograph fell out.

It was Ethan.

But not the Ethan I knew.

He was standing inside a hospital conference room.

Beside him was Sophia.

Beside Sophia was Claire.

And beside Claire was another person.

My father.

All four of them.

Together.

I stared at the picture.

My father wasn’t discovering Ethan’s secrets.

He was part of them.

My phone rang.

I jumped.

Unknown number.

For a second, I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice spoke.

“Madison, you found the folder.”

I froze.

“Who is this?”

“You need to leave your father’s house.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“How do you know where I am?”

Silence.

Then:

“Because I’m watching the house.”

I moved toward the window.

Slowly.

Carefully.

“Who are you?”

The man didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“You think Ethan betrayed you.”

I looked at the folder in my hand.

“But Ethan is only one part of the story.”

My heartbeat grew louder.

“What does that mean?”

The voice became quieter.

“It means your father has been protecting a secret that could destroy all of you.”

The call ended.

I stood completely still.

Then I heard something.

A sound from upstairs.

A floorboard moving.

Someone was inside.

My first thought was my father.

But then I remembered.

I had entered with a key.

The house was supposed to be empty.

I grabbed the folder and moved silently toward the staircase.

Every instinct told me to leave.

But I didn’t.

Because I needed answers.

I reached the second floor.

The hallway was dark.

My father’s bedroom door was slightly open.

I was certain it had been closed.

I walked closer.

Inside, I saw movement.

A shadow.

Someone searching through the room.

I stepped back.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared.

From Ethan.

“Madison, don’t trust anyone in that house.”

I stared at the message.

A second one arrived.

“Especially the person you think is protecting you.”

My eyes moved toward the bedroom door.

The shadow inside stopped moving.

Then slowly turned toward me.

May you like

The door opened wider.

And my father’s voice whispered my name.
