Chapter 6 - The Truth Daniel Tried to Bury Forever

The message from Rachel stayed on my screen for almost a minute.

Elena, you need to see this immediately. We found proof Vanessa Cole is alive under another name.

A week ago, those words would have destroyed me.

A week ago, I would have asked why.

Why would someone do this?

Why would Daniel betray me?

Why would Vanessa enter my life?

Why would anyone create such an elaborate lie?

But now, I understood something.

People who built their lives on deception always believed they were smarter than everyone else.

They believed they could control the story.

They believed they could decide what others knew.

What they forgot was simple.

Every lie required maintenance.

And eventually, people became exhausted trying to protect them.

I drove straight to Rachel’s office.

I did not call Daniel.

I did not warn him.

For the first time in my life, I understood the power of silence.

Daniel had spent months using silence as a weapon.

Now I was using it as protection.

When I arrived, Rachel was waiting with a thick folder on her desk.

She looked different.

Not afraid.

Concerned.

That told me whatever she had found was worse than we expected.

“Sit down,” she said.

I closed the door behind me.

“What did you find?”

Rachel opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A woman.

Different hair.

Different name.

Different life.

But the face was unmistakable.

Vanessa.

I stared at the picture.

“Who is she?”

Rachel slid a document toward me.

“Her current legal identity is Natalie Brooks.”

I frowned.

“Natalie?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Rachel took a breath.

“That is what we need to understand.”

I looked at the documents.

Birth records.

Employment records.

Housing information.

Everything showed a different woman.

But underneath those records was something hidden.

A connection.

“Vanessa Cole disappeared after her reported death,” Rachel explained.

“Then what?”

“Six months later, Natalie Brooks appeared.”

I looked up.

“Six months?”

“Yes.”

“Same city?”

Rachel nodded.

My stomach tightened.

That was not coincidence.

“Someone created this identity.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Rachel looked at me.

“That is the part you are not going to like.”

I waited.

“Daniel helped.”

The room went quiet.

Even though I already knew Daniel was involved, hearing it said aloud still felt different.

Because there was a difference between suspecting someone was capable of betrayal...

and seeing proof that they planned it.

Rachel opened another document.

“This is a payment record.”

I looked down.

The account belonged to Daniel.

The transfer was dated nine months ago.

The description said:

Identity relocation services.

My fingers went cold.

“He paid for this?”

“Yes.”

I looked away.

For years, I had shared a home with him.

I had slept beside him.

I had trusted him with my future.

And all that time, he was helping another woman disappear.

“Why?” I whispered.

Rachel leaned back.

“That’s what we need to find out.”

I looked at the documents again.

“No.”

Rachel looked at me.

“No?”

I shook my head.

“We already know why.”

She waited.

“Money.”

Three million dollars.

My inheritance.

The trust my grandmother left behind.

The money Daniel knew I would receive.

The money Vanessa wanted.

But something still bothered me.

The pregnancy.

I looked at Rachel.

“What about the baby?”

She became quiet.

“We looked into that too.”

My heart slowed.

“And?”

“The medical records are suspicious.”

“What does that mean?”

“Some information is missing.”

“Missing?”

“Yes. The clinic where you saw them has no complete record under Vanessa Cole.”

I stared.

“But she was there.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel paid.”

“Yes.”

“So how?”

Rachel opened another file.

“Someone used a different name.”

I looked at the paper.

Natalie Brooks.

The same fake identity.

The same woman.

The same lie.

I closed my eyes.

The entire thing was bigger than I imagined.

Daniel and Vanessa had not simply hidden an affair.

They had created a new person.

They had built a new life.

And they planned to use my money to fund it.

My phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

You should stop digging.

I froze.

Rachel noticed.

“What is it?”

I handed her the phone.

She read the message.

“Did Daniel send this?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Daniel always wants me to know he is in control.”

I looked at the screen.

“This person wants me afraid.”

Rachel immediately became serious.

“We need to report this.”

“Not yet.”

“Elena.”

“I need to know who sent it.”

She studied me.

“You’re becoming very calm.”

I looked at the folder.

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I’m becoming very clear.”

That night, I returned to the apartment.

Not our apartment.

Not anymore.

I had moved into a small temporary place near my office.

It was not luxurious.

It was not familiar.

But it was mine.

For the first time in years, I slept somewhere without wondering if the person beside me was telling the truth.

Around midnight, I received another message.

This time from Daniel.

Please talk to me.

I stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

I can explain everything.

I almost deleted it.

Almost.

Then I replied.

Tomorrow. One conversation.

His response came immediately.

Thank you.

I put my phone down.

But I knew something Daniel did not.

This conversation was not for reconciliation.

It was for answers.

The next afternoon, we met at a quiet restaurant.

Daniel looked exhausted.

The confident man who once believed he could control everything was gone.

He looked like someone who finally realized the truth was catching up.

“Elena.”

I sat across from him.

“Talk.”

He swallowed.

“I know what you found.”

“Do you?”

His eyes lowered.

“Victor.”

“Vanessa.”

“Everything.”

I watched him.

Waiting.

Finally, he said the words I never expected.

“I was trapped.”

I almost laughed.

There it was.

Not an apology.

An excuse.

“You were trapped?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Daniel looked around before lowering his voice.

“Victor Cole had information about me.”

“What information?”

He hesitated.

That hesitation mattered.

“Daniel.”

He looked at me.

“Tell me.”

His hands tightened.

“Years ago, before I met you, I made a mistake.”

“What kind of mistake?”

“One that Victor helped me cover.”

I waited.

“He used that against me.”

“So you helped him?”

“I had no choice.”

I leaned forward.

“Everyone says they had no choice when they are caught.”

His eyes filled with regret.

“I never wanted you involved.”

“But you involved me anyway.”

Silence.

“You knew about Vanessa.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she was pretending to be someone else.”

“Yes.”

“You knew they wanted my money.”

His face changed.

That was the hardest question.

Because this time, he could not escape.

“I knew part of it.”

My heart sank.

“Part?”

“I didn’t know everything.”

I stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I’m telling the truth now.”

I shook my head.

“No, Daniel.”

My voice became quiet.

“You’re telling me the version that saves you.”

He looked hurt.

But I continued.

“Did you love me?”

The question surprised him.

He looked at me for a long time.

Then he answered.

“Yes.”

I believed he believed that.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Because people could love someone and still destroy them.

Love did not erase choices.

Love did not cancel consequences.

I stood.

“I hope one day you understand something.”

Daniel looked up.

“What?”

“You didn’t lose me because of Vanessa.”

I picked up my bag.

“You lost me the moment you decided I was someone you could sacrifice.”

I walked away.

But before I reached the door, Daniel spoke.

“Elena.”

I stopped.

His voice was broken.

“There’s something else.”

I turned.

“What?”

He looked terrified.

“Vanessa isn’t the person you should be afraid of.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then who?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

Like he was afraid someone was watching.

Then he whispered:

“Victor Cole is alive.”

My entire body froze.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man who connected every secret.

The man behind everything.

Alive.

I stared at Daniel.

And suddenly, I understood.

Vanessa was not the beginning of the story.

She was only a piece.

The real person behind the plan had been watching from the shadows the entire time.

May you like

And now...

he knew I was looking back.
