Chapter 11 - The Recording in the Black Box

Gabriel looked at Chloe.

“Not again.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Trust me.”

Evelyn laughed.

“Such an unfortunate family habit.”

Chloe’s gun remained raised.

Voss stepped closer.

“Where is Beatrice?”

Gabriel said nothing.

“Where is the child?”

Nothing.

Evelyn looked at Chloe.

“Shoot him.”

Chloe’s hand trembled.

Gabriel watched her.

Then Chloe turned.

She fired at the ceiling sprinkler.

Water exploded through the room.

Lights shorted.

Adrian moved.

Gabriel tackled Voss.

Chloe struck Evelyn with the gun.

Chaos.

When emergency lighting returned, Voss had escaped through a connecting door.

Evelyn was restrained.

Chloe was alive.

Vittorio was rushed to surgery.

Adrian looked at his mother.

“Why?”

Evelyn stared back.

“Because your father was weak.”

“He was decent.”

“He wanted to surrender everything.”

“He wanted to stop killing.”

“Exactly.”

Adrian’s face changed.

Whatever love remained died quietly.

“You’ll testify.”

She laughed.

“Against whom?”

“Everyone.”

Evelyn smiled.

“You still don’t understand. Voss has people everywhere.”

Adrian held up his phone.

“Not anymore.”

The black-box files were public.

Her smile vanished.

Back with Beatrice, Thomas discovered one final encrypted recording.

Vittorio and Thomas.

Eighteen years earlier.

They were discussing the plan.

Then Beatrice heard her mother’s voice.

Eleanor.

She covered her mouth.

Her mother had known.

Everything.

Eleanor had volunteered to remain with Beatrice while Thomas disappeared.

She had accepted the danger.

But another section shocked Beatrice.

“If something happens to us,” Eleanor said, “Beatrice chooses her own life. No families. No arrangements. Promise me.”

Thomas’s recorded voice answered.

“I promise.”

Beatrice looked at her father.

“You broke it.”

Thomas cried.

“Yes.”

“You let Vittorio arrange Gabriel into my life.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

Beatrice’s anger softened but did not disappear.

“Fear doesn’t make control right.”

“I know.”

That became the central truth of everything.

Gabriel controlled her because he feared losing her.

Thomas lied because he feared Meridian.

Vittorio manipulated because he feared failure.

Chloe betrayed because she feared being worthless.

Adrian pursued revenge because he feared his father had died without justice.

Fear had built the cage.

Beatrice would not pass it to Matteo.

When Gabriel returned, exhausted and bruised, he found her feeding their son.

“Vittorio?”

“Alive.”

“Chloe?”

“Safe.”

“Voss?”

“Gone.”

Beatrice nodded.

Gabriel sat.

“There’s something I need to do.”

“What?”

He placed documents on the table.

Divorce papers.

Already signed by him.

Beatrice stared.

“You’re divorcing me?”

“No.”

He swallowed.

“I’m giving you the choice I should have given you that night.”

Her eyes filled.

“If you want to leave, sign them. I won’t fight custody. I won’t use my money. I won’t use my name. We work out what’s best for Matteo through independent lawyers.”

Beatrice touched the papers.

“And if I don’t sign?”

“Then I spend however long it takes becoming a husband you choose instead of one you’re trapped with.”

She looked at him for a long time.

“Where are the guards?”

“Outside.”

“Who controls them?”

“You.”

That surprised her.

Gabriel handed her a phone.

Full security control.

Gate permissions.

Vehicles.

Accounts.

Everything.

“You can leave tonight.”

Beatrice looked toward the door.

Unlocked.

For the first time, Gabriel was not standing between her and it.

She began crying.

He did not approach.

“Can I hold you?” he asked.

She looked at him.

Then nodded.

Gabriel held his wife.

Not tightly.

Not possessively.

She leaned into him.

Only for a moment.

Then Matteo cried.

Both laughed softly.

The peace lasted eleven minutes.

Thomas rushed inside.

“The final recording.”

“What?”

“There’s another voice.”

He played it.

Samuel Voss.

Speaking to someone.

Planning Eleanor’s murder.

Then the second voice answered.

Beatrice knew it immediately.

Her blood turned cold.

She looked toward the doorway.

May you like

Because the person whose voice filled the room was standing there.

And Chloe whispered, “Beatrice… I can explain.”
