Chapter 10 - The Box She Left Behind

I returned to the notary.
He looked at the photograph.
Then he closed his eyes.
“Teresa didn't want this revealed while she was alive.”
“Why?”
“Because she believed you weren't ready.”
“Ready for what?”
He opened another drawer.
A second wooden box appeared.
This one was smaller.
He pushed it toward me.
“This was delivered yesterday.”
“By whom?”
“An attorney.”
“Whose attorney?”
He didn't answer.
I opened it.
Inside was Teresa's wedding ring.
Not the ring she wore when we married.
Another one.
Old.
Worn.
Engraved inside.
I read the inscription.
“T.S. — R.O.”
My hands went numb.
“Rafael Ortega.”
The notary nodded.
“Teresa was married to him?”
“No.”
“Then what is this?”
“I don't know.”
I stared at the ring.
There were more documents underneath.
A marriage certificate.
I picked it up.
Teresa's name was there.
So was Rafael's.
The date was thirty years earlier.
My head spun.
“She was married before her husband?”
“Yes.”
“And she never told me?”
“No.”
I read the certificate again.
Then I saw something strange.
The marriage had been annulled less than one year later.
Reason:
Fraud.
I looked at the notary.
“What did Rafael do?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why did Teresa keep the ring?”
He pointed toward another document.
“Read that.”
It was a legal statement written by Teresa.
She claimed Rafael had attempted to use her identity and assets for financial fraud.
She escaped.
He disappeared.
Years later, he returned.
Her husband helped her.
Rafael threatened them both.
Then came the part that changed everything.
Teresa had discovered Rafael was connected to a network of people who targeted wealthy widows.
He didn't simply want money.
He wanted properties.
He found vulnerable people.
He pressured them.
He manipulated relatives.
He created fake debts.
He used fear.
Teresa had spent years documenting everything.
Then I saw my name.
My entire body went cold.
Teresa had written:
“Rafael noticed him before I did.”
I couldn't breathe.
The young man sleeping in a broken truck.
The man who had no family.
The man who appeared desperate.
Rafael had noticed me.
But why?
I kept reading.
Teresa believed Rafael had intentionally positioned me near her.
Not directly.
Through another person.
Someone who knew I was desperate.
Someone who knew I would help an elderly woman for money.
Someone who knew Teresa owned property.
The thought was horrifying.
I remembered the first day.
The pharmacy.
The broken bag.
The tacos.
Was it all coincidence?
Or had someone arranged for me to meet Teresa?
I turned the page.
There was a name.
A man named Esteban.
My old supervisor.
The same man I had fought with before losing my job.
I remembered him.
He had once told me about “easy work” helping an elderly woman.
I had refused.
A week later, I met Teresa.
My hands shook.
The notary watched me.
“Do you understand now?”
“No.”
“Teresa believed your meeting was manipulated.”
“Then why didn't she tell me?”
“Because she wanted to see whether you could break free from the people who had used you.”
I looked at the ring.
“And did I?”
The notary said nothing.
Then his office door opened.
Mariana stood there.
She was crying.
She held an envelope.
“It came to me this morning.”
“From whom?”
She handed it to me.
On the front was Teresa's handwriting.
“Give this to him only after he learns the truth about Rafael.”
I opened it.
Inside was one sentence.
“Now ask Mariana what her mother did the night my husband died.”
May you like
Mariana covered her face.
And I realized she had been carrying another secret all along.
