Chapter 9 - The Truth Behind the Accident

"Get your hands off him!"
Anna Foster screamed as Dante Moretti's wheelchair disappeared into the darkness.
The ballroom erupted in panic.
Guests shouted. Glass shattered. Somewhere near the stage, a woman began crying.
Anna pushed through the crowd, desperately searching for Dante.
"Dante!"
No answer.
Then she felt a hand close around her wrist.
"Your mother lied about everything."
The voice was unmistakable.
Rebecca Voss.
Anna spun around.
A woman stood inches away from her, wearing a black evening gown and a dark wig.
Even in the darkness, Anna recognized those eyes.
The same eyes she'd seen in the forged security footage.
The same cold expression.
Rebecca smiled.
"Hello, Anna."
Anna tried to pull away.
Rebecca tightened her grip.
"Don't scream."
"Where's Dante?"
Rebecca glanced toward the ballroom's emergency exit.
"That depends on how cooperative you're willing to be."
Anna's heart pounded.
"Let go of me."
Rebecca leaned closer.
"Your mother should have stayed dead."
Something inside Anna snapped.
She drove her heel down onto Rebecca's foot.
Rebecca cried out.
Anna twisted free and stumbled backward.
"VICTOR!"
A flashlight beam swept across the ballroom.
Victor Hale appeared beside the stage with two security officers.
"Anna!"
"Rebecca's here!"
Rebecca immediately turned and ran.
Victor shouted into his radio.
"West exit! Stop the woman in black!"
Anna didn't wait.
She pushed toward the corridor where Dante had disappeared.
Then her phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
A message appeared.
If you want Dante alive, come to the underground garage. Alone.
Beneath it was a photograph.
Dante sat in his wheelchair inside a dimly lit room.
His hands rested on the armrests.
His expression was furious.
And behind him stood Lorenzo Moretti.
Anna stopped running.
For one terrible moment, she couldn't breathe.
Then she forced herself to think.
Lorenzo wanted her frightened.
He wanted her isolated.
And he wanted her to make the same mistake everyone had made with Dante for six years.
Assume he was helpless.
Anna looked at the photograph again.
Dante wasn't restrained.
His wheelchair was positioned beside a metal table.
And his right hand rested near the emergency control button beneath his armrest.
She recognized that button.
Dante had installed a discreet security system in his wheelchair months earlier, after an incident involving an overly aggressive photographer.
It could send his location to Victor's private security network.
Anna immediately called Victor.
He answered after one ring.
"Anna, where are you?"
"I know where Dante is."
"Where?"
"The underground garage. Lorenzo has him."
Victor cursed.
"Stay where you are."
"No."
"Anna—"
"Listen to me. Dante has his emergency transmitter."
Victor became silent.
Then she heard him speaking to someone nearby.
"Check the private tracking system. Now."
A pause.
Then Victor returned.
"You're right. His signal is active."
Anna exhaled.
"Where?"
"Lower level. East service garage."
She looked toward the emergency staircase.
"I'm going down."
"Absolutely not."
"Victor, Lorenzo specifically demanded that I come alone."
"Which is exactly why you shouldn't."
Anna closed her eyes.
He was right.
She knew he was right.
But she also knew something else.
Lorenzo had spent years underestimating Dante.
And now he was underestimating her.
"I'm not going in alone," she said.
Victor hesitated.
"What are you planning?"
Anna looked toward the service corridor.
"Something your boss taught me."
In the underground garage, Dante Moretti stared at his younger brother.
Lorenzo stood beside a black SUV, nervously checking his phone.
Two unfamiliar men guarded the service entrance.
Dante examined the room.
Three exits.
One security camera.
A metal storage cabinet.
And an emergency alarm mounted beside the elevator.
His brother noticed him looking around.
"Don't bother."
Dante raised an eyebrow.
"With what?"
"Trying to escape."
Dante laughed.
"Lorenzo, you really should stop confusing my wheelchair with a prison."
His brother's face reddened.
"This isn't funny."
"No. It's pathetic."
Lorenzo stepped closer.
"You've always thought you were better than me."
Dante studied him.
"Is that what this is about?"
Lorenzo laughed bitterly.
"You got everything."
"Everything?"
"Father's approval. The company. The foundation."
Dante's expression hardened.
"And you think that justifies what happened to me?"
Lorenzo looked away.
Dante leaned forward.
"Look at me."
His brother refused.
"LOOK AT ME!"
Lorenzo turned.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Dante asked the question he'd been carrying for six years.
"Did you arrange my accident?"
Lorenzo's expression changed.
"I didn't want you hurt."
Dante stopped breathing.
It wasn't a denial.
"Then what did you want?"
Lorenzo swallowed.
"I wanted you to stop."
"Stop what?"
"Destroying everything Father promised me."
Dante stared at him.
"I never tried to take anything from you."
Lorenzo shook his head.
"You don't understand."
"Then explain it."
His brother looked toward the service entrance.
For the first time, Dante noticed genuine fear in his expression.
"Richard told me you were going to expose the financial transfers."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"Because you were stealing."
"I was borrowing!"
"From our father's trust?"
Lorenzo's face twisted.
"I was going to replace everything!"
Dante shook his head.
"And when Father discovered it?"
Lorenzo's eyes filled.
"Richard said we could fix it."
Dante felt cold.
"By tampering with my car?"
His brother looked away.
"Lorenzo."
A long silence followed.
Then Lorenzo whispered, "It wasn't supposed to happen like that."
Anna reached the lower service corridor five minutes later.
Victor and two trusted security officers followed at a distance.
She wore a small wireless microphone concealed beneath her dress.
Margaret had insisted that everything be recorded.
Anna had insisted on one additional condition.
No one would enter the garage unless Dante was in immediate danger or she gave the agreed signal.
Victor hadn't liked the arrangement.
But he understood.
If Lorenzo believed Anna had arrived alone, he might finally reveal something useful.
Anna stopped outside the garage entrance.
She took a deep breath.
Then she knocked.
A security guard opened the door.
"Who are you?"
"Anna Foster."
He examined her.
"You're alone?"
She raised both hands.
"That's what Lorenzo requested."
The guard stepped aside.
Anna entered.
The first thing she saw was Dante.
He looked directly at her.
His expression changed.
"Anna, what are you doing?"
She tried to smile.
"Apparently I have terrible taste in evening entertainment."
Dante almost laughed.
Then Lorenzo stepped forward.
"You came."
Anna turned toward him.
"Where's Rebecca?"
His expression hardened.
"That's none of your concern."
"She framed me. She threatened my sister. And she just tried to abduct me."
Lorenzo glanced toward the guards.
Anna noticed.
He hadn't expected Rebecca to approach her.
Interesting.
Dante looked toward his brother.
"Tell her what you just told me."
Lorenzo froze.
Anna turned.
"What?"
Dante's expression became cold.
"He says he didn't intend for me to get hurt."
Anna stared at Lorenzo.
Her stomach twisted.
"Then what did you intend?"
Lorenzo said nothing.
Anna stepped closer.
"Six years ago, someone tampered with Dante's vehicle. My mother discovered it. Your father tried to stop it. And somehow, Dante ended up in the hospital."
Lorenzo looked away.
Anna's voice hardened.
"What happened?"
His brother swallowed.
Then he whispered, "Richard changed the plan."
Dante became completely still.
"What plan?"
Lorenzo looked toward the garage entrance.
And Anna realized he was afraid someone might be listening.
At the foundation gala, Margaret Whitmore stood beside the stage while emergency lighting illuminated the ballroom.
Reporters surrounded her.
"Is Mr. Moretti safe?"
"Are the allegations against his brother true?"
"What about Anna Foster?"
Margaret raised her hand.
"I'll be making a statement shortly."
Her phone vibrated.
A message from Victor.
Recording active. Lorenzo speaking.
Margaret exhaled.
Then she opened a secure connection to the independent investigator she'd retained that morning.
The evidence was finally beginning to come together.
But one problem remained.
Richard Moretti had disappeared.
And so had Dr. Samuel Voss.
In the garage, Lorenzo began talking.
"I was supposed to delay Dante."
Anna stared at him.
"Delay him?"
"Keep him at the garage until Richard could retrieve the financial documents from his car."
Dante frowned.
"What documents?"
"The original transfer records."
Dante remembered.
Six years earlier, he'd discovered irregularities involving the family's investment accounts.
He'd collected evidence.
He'd planned to confront his father.
And he'd believed Lorenzo might help him.
Instead, his brother had been working with Richard.
Dante looked directly at him.
"You told Richard I had the documents."
Lorenzo nodded.
"I thought he'd return the money."
Anna felt sick.
"And the car?"
Lorenzo swallowed.
"Richard hired someone to disable it."
Dante's expression hardened.
"Disable it how?"
"Make certain you couldn't leave the garage."
Anna stared at him.
"But Dante drove away."
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Dante leaned forward.
"Why?"
His brother's voice broke.
"Because I told you Father was waiting at home."
The memory struck Dante like a physical blow.
The garage.
The argument.
His father's warning.
Then Lorenzo insisting that everything had been resolved.
He remembered getting into his car.
He remembered starting the engine.
And then—
Dante gripped his wheelchair's armrests.
"Richard told you the car was safe?"
Lorenzo nodded.
"He said they'd disconnected the device."
Anna felt her stomach twist.
"But they hadn't."
Lorenzo shook his head.
"No."
Dante stared at him.
For six years, he'd imagined his accident as a moment of terrible misfortune.
Now he understood that his brother had helped create the circumstances that made it possible.
And that Richard had known exactly what might happen.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?" Dante asked.
Lorenzo began crying.
"Because Richard said I'd go to prison."
Dante looked away.
Anna watched him carefully.
She wanted to comfort him.
But some wounds couldn't be softened with reassuring words.
Lorenzo wiped his face.
"After the accident, Richard told me we had to protect the family."
Dante laughed bitterly.
"By taking away my authority?"
Lorenzo nodded.
"He said if you recovered enough to investigate, you'd discover everything."
Anna felt cold.
"And Dr. Voss?"
Lorenzo hesitated.
"He agreed to alter the medical assessments."
Dante stared at him.
"Why?"
"Richard promised to fund his private medical business."
Anna shook her head.
"And Rebecca?"
Lorenzo's expression changed.
"She was supposed to find Annabelle."
Anna stepped closer.
"By impersonating me?"
Lorenzo nodded.
"Rebecca resembles you. Richard believed that if she appeared in the right places, your mother would eventually come out of hiding."
Anna felt sick.
"So the forged medical records..."
"Were meant to bring attention to you."
"And the bank account?"
Lorenzo lowered his eyes.
"Richard arranged it."
Anna stared at him.
Then she asked the question that mattered most.
"Who ordered my mother's disappearance?"
Lorenzo looked toward Dante.
His expression became terrified.
"That wasn't Richard."
A metallic sound echoed through the garage.
One of the guards suddenly collapsed.
The second guard turned toward the entrance.
A woman stepped into the light.
Rebecca Voss.
She carried a small black case.
And beside her stood her father.
Dr. Samuel Voss.
Anna's heart stopped.
Rebecca smiled.
"Hello, everyone."
Dante immediately moved his wheelchair between Anna and the newcomers.
"What are you doing here?"
Rebecca ignored him.
She looked toward Lorenzo.
"You've been talking."
Lorenzo stepped backward.
"Rebecca, listen—"
She raised her hand.
"Don't."
Dr. Voss approached the metal table.
His expression was frighteningly calm.
"Dante, I'm afraid this situation has become unnecessarily complicated."
Dante stared at him.
"You tried to drug me."
Dr. Voss sighed.
"I attempted to administer a medically appropriate sedative."
"Without my consent."
"Under exceptional circumstances."
Anna stepped forward.
"You're not touching him."
Rebecca laughed.
"Still playing nurse?"
Anna looked directly at her.
"No."
She straightened.
"I'm the woman who's going to make certain you answer for what you've done."
Rebecca's smile disappeared.
Dr. Voss opened the black case.
Inside were several sealed medical supplies.
Anna recognized them immediately.
Her stomach tightened.
"Dante, move away from him."
But Dante was already reaching toward his wheelchair's emergency control.
Rebecca noticed.
She lunged forward.
Anna shouted.
"NOW!"
The garage doors burst open.
Victor entered with two security officers.
"EVERYBODY FREEZE!"
Rebecca spun around.
Dr. Voss dropped the case.
Lorenzo stumbled backward.
For one brief moment, Anna believed it was over.
Then a gunshot echoed.
Everyone ducked.
One of the overhead lights shattered.
Victor immediately drew his weapon.
"GET DOWN!"
Anna threw herself behind the metal table.
Dante maneuvered his wheelchair behind a concrete support column.
Rebecca ran toward the service corridor.
Victor shouted for the officers to stop her.
Dr. Voss raised both hands.
"Don't shoot!"
Lorenzo collapsed against the wall.
Then Anna heard a familiar voice.
"Enough!"
Richard Moretti stepped out of the shadows.
He held a handgun.
And he was pointing it directly at Dante.
"Richard."
Dante's voice was steady.
His uncle smiled.
"Hello, nephew."
Victor immediately raised his weapon.
"Put it down!"
Richard ignored him.
Anna slowly stood.
"Don't."
Richard glanced toward her.
"Miss Foster. You've caused me a remarkable amount of trouble."
Anna stared at him.
"You destroyed my family."
Richard laughed.
"Your mother destroyed herself."
Dante's expression hardened.
"Leave her out of this."
Richard turned toward him.
"Still protecting everyone except yourself."
Dante looked directly into his uncle's eyes.
"Tell me why you did it."
Richard's smile faded.
"Your father was going to ruin everything."
"Because you were stealing from him."
"Because he never understood what it took to build an empire!"
Dante shook his head.
"You didn't build anything."
Richard's expression twisted.
"I built the financial network that made this family powerful!"
"And then you stole from it."
Richard raised the gun.
Anna's heart pounded.
Victor shifted his position.
Richard immediately noticed.
"Don't."
Victor stopped.
Dante leaned forward.
"Richard, it's over."
His uncle laughed.
"You think a few documents will destroy me?"
Dante looked toward Anna.
Then back at Richard.
"No."
His voice became cold.
"Your own words will."
Richard frowned.
Anna slowly lifted her hand.
The tiny microphone beneath her dress was still recording.
And Victor's security team had transmitted every word.
Richard's expression changed.
Then he smiled.
"You clever little nurse."
Anna stared at him.
"I'm not your victim anymore."
Richard's finger tightened around the trigger.
Dante immediately moved his wheelchair forward.
"Richard, look at me!"
His uncle turned.
And Victor moved.
A second gunshot echoed.
Anna screamed.
Then everything happened at once.
Richard stumbled.
Victor tackled him.
The handgun skidded across the floor.
Security officers rushed forward.
Anna ran toward Dante.
"Dante!"
He was still in his wheelchair.
Conscious.
Uninjured.
He grabbed her hand.
"I'm okay."
Anna began crying.
She pressed her forehead against his.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Dante whispered, "You were incredible."
Anna laughed through her tears.
"You're never allowed to say that after someone points a gun at you."
He smiled.
"Fair."
Behind them, Victor secured Richard's hands.
Dr. Voss was detained.
Lorenzo sat against the wall, staring at the floor.
But Rebecca was gone.
An hour later, police investigators arrived at the estate.
Richard and Dr. Voss were taken into custody.
Lorenzo agreed to provide a formal statement through his attorney.
Margaret delivered the original financial records, surveillance footage, and recorded conversations to the investigators.
Anna sat beside Dante in his office.
Her evening gown was torn.
Her hair had fallen loose.
And she had never felt more exhausted.
Dante looked toward her.
"Are you okay?"
She considered the question.
Then shook her head.
"Not really."
He nodded.
"Me neither."
Anna leaned against him.
For several minutes, they sat quietly.
Then Margaret entered.
Her expression was serious.
"We've received confirmation."
Dante looked up.
"About what?"
"The independent forensic review."
Anna straightened.
Margaret placed a document on the desk.
"The original trust is authentic. The amendment Lorenzo submitted was fabricated."
Dante exhaled.
"And Anna's inheritance?"
Margaret smiled faintly.
"Also authentic."
Anna stared at her.
"Why?"
Margaret's expression softened.
"Your mother and Antonio Moretti established a confidential agreement."
Annabelle appeared in the doorway.
Anna turned.
"Mom?"
Her mother approached slowly.
"Antonio wanted to protect you and Claire."
Anna frowned.
"From what?"
Annabelle's eyes filled.
"From the consequences of what I discovered."
Dante leaned forward.
"What did you discover?"
Annabelle looked toward Margaret.
Then she removed a sealed envelope from her handbag.
"This is the document Antonio wanted you to find."
Anna stared at it.
Her mother continued.
"It explains why your father died, why I disappeared, and why Richard was so desperate to keep Dante under his control."
Dante extended his hand.
Annabelle hesitated.
Then she gave him the envelope.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A financial document.
And a handwritten confession.
Dante began reading.
His expression changed.
Anna leaned closer.
"What does it say?"
Dante didn't answer.
He continued reading.
Then he slowly looked toward Annabelle.
"Who wrote this?"
Her mother began crying.
Anna felt cold.
"Mom?"
Annabelle covered her mouth.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Then she whispered, "The person who actually arranged the accident."
Dante stared at the document.
Anna reached toward him.
"Who?"
He turned the page.
And suddenly, his face went completely white.
Because beneath the confession was a photograph of someone standing beside his father.
Someone who had supposedly died eight years earlier.
Anna leaned closer.
Her heart stopped.
The photograph showed Antonio Moretti.
Alive.
And standing beside him was Rebecca Voss.
Then Dante's phone rang.
An unknown number.
He answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
"Hello, son."
Dante stopped breathing.
His father's voice continued.
"If you want the truth, come to the old medical wing."
May you like
A pause.
"And don't bring Anna."
