Chapter 4 - The Lie Hidden Behind The Wedding Ring

The message was still glowing on Ethan’s hidden phone.
“The person is standing outside the hotel right now…”
I read it three times.
Not because I didn’t understand the words.
Because I couldn’t accept them.
Someone was outside.
Someone who had been following me.
Someone Marcus Reed had identified.
I looked toward the window.
The Manhattan skyline was still beautiful.
The city lights still moved like nothing had changed.
But inside that bridal suite, everything was different.
Five hours earlier, I had walked into this room believing I was starting the safest chapter of my life.
Now I was standing barefoot in my wedding dress, holding evidence that my husband had known my life was being watched.
And he hadn’t told me.
I looked at Ethan.
My anger returned.
Stronger this time.
Because secrets could have explanations.
But silence was a choice.
I placed the hidden phone on the table.
Then I walked toward the window.
I needed space.
I needed air.
I needed to think.
That was the one thing I had always trusted about myself.
My ability to think when everyone else panicked.
My entire career was built on that.
When a CEO’s reputation collapsed, I was the person they called.
When a company faced a public scandal, I was the person who entered the room after everyone else had already lost control.
I knew how to separate facts from emotions.
But this was different.
Because this time, I wasn’t protecting someone else’s reputation.
I was protecting my own life.
I looked down at my wedding ring.
The diamond caught the light.
Beautiful.
Perfect.
A symbol of trust.
Except now I wondered if it represented something else.
A promise made by someone who wasn’t telling me everything.
I turned back.
“Ethan.”
My voice was quiet.
But he heard it.
His eyes opened slowly.
For a moment, he looked confused.
Then he smiled slightly.
“Victoria?”
That smile almost broke me.
Because it was the same smile I had loved.
The same smile I had spent two years believing belonged only to me.
“You’re awake,” he said.
I stared at him.
“Yeah.”
He sat up.
“Are you okay?”
That question almost made me laugh.
Are you okay?
The irony was almost painful.
“I found something.”
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
Because I knew him.
“What?”
I held up the second phone.
The color drained from his face.
Not completely.
Not dramatically.
But enough.
Enough for me to know.
He recognized it.
“You want to explain why my husband has a secret phone?”
The room became silent.
Ethan looked at the phone.
Then at me.
“Victoria…”
“No.”
I raised my hand.
“Don’t start with my name.”
His expression tightened.
“Let me explain.”
“Then explain.”
He looked away.
That hurt more than anger would have.
Because hesitation was an answer.
“You were investigating Chloe.”
His eyes moved back to mine.
“How did you know?”
I almost smiled.
A painful smile.
“Because apparently I’m the last person to know everything happening around me.”
He stood up.
“Victoria, it’s not what you think.”
“That sentence has never made anyone feel better.”
He ran his hand through his hair.
A nervous habit I had seen before.
But never directed at me.
“I wasn’t cheating.”
“I didn’t ask if you were.”
That stopped him.
Because I was telling the truth.
That wasn’t my biggest fear anymore.
My fear was that there was an entire story happening behind my back.
A story everyone else knew.
Except me.
“Then tell me what happened in Seattle.”
His face changed.
A small reaction.
But there.
“You saw the video.”
“Yes.”
“And Chloe?”
“Yes.”
He closed his eyes.
For a second, he looked exhausted.
Not guilty.
Exhausted.
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
“After the wedding.”
I stared at him.
“After the wedding?”
“I didn’t want to ruin today.”
I stepped closer.
“You didn’t want to ruin today?”
My voice rose.
“You mean the day when I stood in front of everyone and promised my life to you?”
“Victoria—”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to protect my feelings by hiding the truth.”
He became quiet.
That silence told me something.
Ethan was not a man caught in a lie.
He was a man carrying one.
And somehow that was worse.
“What happened in Seattle?”
He sat down.
Slowly.
Like he had suddenly become older.
“Chloe contacted me six weeks ago.”
I crossed my arms.
“Why?”
“Because she found something.”
“What?”
He looked at me.
“About my first marriage.”
I waited.
He didn’t continue.
“Ethan.”
He swallowed.
“Chloe and I didn’t end our marriage because we fell out of love.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Then why?”
He looked toward the window.
“Because someone wanted us apart.”
The words landed heavily.
“Someone?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
He hesitated.
And that hesitation told me the answer mattered.
“Ethan.”
He finally looked at me.
“My father.”
I froze.
I had met his father twice.
Richard Davis.
A wealthy businessman.
Cold.
Controlled.
The kind of man who entered a room and expected everyone else to adjust.
“He had something to do with your divorce?”
“Yes.”
I waited for more.
But Ethan didn’t give it.
“Why?”
“Because Chloe knew something she wasn’t supposed to know.”
“What?”
He looked at the hidden phone.
Then back at me.
“That’s what I was trying to find out.”
The room went quiet.
I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
The woman who had texted me was not the villain I expected.
My husband was not the simple liar I feared.
And somewhere in the middle was a secret involving a family I barely knew.
I picked up the phone again.
“What does Marcus have?”
Ethan stood quickly.
“Victoria, don’t.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because if Marcus found what I think he found…”
He stopped.
“What?”
His jaw tightened.
“It means someone knew Chloe was going to contact you.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Someone knew?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Ethan didn’t answer.
That was the moment I realized something.
He wasn’t afraid of Chloe.
He wasn’t afraid of me finding out.
He was afraid of someone else.
Someone who had been watching.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Ethan looked at the screen.
And his face changed completely.
“Don’t answer that.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because that number…”
He stepped closer.
“Victoria, that’s not Chloe.”
The phone continued ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
I looked at Ethan.
“Then who is it?”
He didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
I accepted the call.
For a few seconds, there was only silence.
Then a woman’s voice whispered.
“Victoria?”
My blood ran cold.
Because I recognized that voice.
Not from a phone call.
From somewhere else.
A memory.
A photograph.
A name Ethan had never mentioned.
The woman continued.
“I’m sorry you found out this way.”
I couldn’t speak.
Ethan looked at me.
Terrified.
May you like
Then the woman said the words that made my entire body freeze.
“I’m Chloe’s mother…”
