Chapter 5 - The Invitation

Claire.

I stared at her name.

"Why?"

Claire's bouquet slipped from her hand.

"I can explain."

Ryan looked genuinely confused.

"You requested Lauren's records?"

"No."

Marcus stepped forward.

"The request carries your signature."

"It's forged."

"By whom?"

Claire stared at the document.

Then whispered, "My mother."

My mother.

I laughed once because the alternative was screaming.

"What?"

Claire looked toward Mom.

She was sitting in the third row.

Her face had gone completely white.

"Mom?"

Mom stood slowly.

"I was trying to protect both of you."

The sentence felt poisonous.

"From what?"

She came toward us.

Claire began crying.

"Tell her."

Mom looked at me.

"When Claire was seventeen, her pregnancy wasn't the only secret."

I felt the entire wedding disappear around me.

"What secret?"

"The father."

Claire whispered, "Mom, don't."

"No more secrets," I said.

Mom closed her eyes.

"The father was married."

I waited.

"Who?"

Before she could answer, Claire stepped between us.

"It doesn't matter."

"It mattered enough to hide for twenty years."

"Lauren."

"Who was he?"

Claire's eyes filled.

"Ryan's uncle."

Ryan recoiled.

"What?"

His uncle Daniel had been twenty-eight when Claire was seventeen.

My stomach turned.

"Did he know her age?"

"Yes," Mom whispered.

Ryan's face became furious.

"He abused her."

Claire flinched.

"Don't say it like that."

"That's what it was."

She began sobbing.

The wedding guests had become irrelevant.

Ryan ordered everyone except immediate family to leave.

The ceremony stopped.

For the next hour, we sat inside the estate.

Claire told the truth.

At seventeen, she'd been manipulated by Daniel Bennett, Ryan's uncle.

The pregnancy and medical emergency followed.

Our parents hid everything because Daniel's family threatened legal and financial retaliation.

Ryan hadn't known.

Years later, Claire's trauma resurfaced when she reconnected with Ryan.

That didn't excuse the affair.

Claire said so herself.

But it explained why the Bennett family and pregnancy had become tangled in her grief.

"Why my records?" I asked.

Mom answered.

After I called her from the hospital that morning, she panicked.

She had convinced herself Claire's fertility treatments or medication might somehow be connected to my complications.

So she tried to access my records.

Illegally.

Stupidly.

Desperately.

Marcus had discovered the request during his investigation.

"Nothing in Lauren's records indicates outside interference," he said firmly.

That mattered.

Hope had died from a placental complication.

Tragic.

Unpredictable.

Not murder.

Not sabotage.

Not some monstrous act by Claire.

I looked at my sister.

For the first time in years, I saw the seventeen-year-old she'd once been.

But compassion didn't erase accountability.

"You still slept with my husband."

"I know."

"You still lied."

"I know."

"And your trauma doesn't make what you did to me acceptable."

"I know."

Claire removed her engagement ring.

Ryan stared.

"What are you doing?"

"We can't get married today."

He nodded slowly.

"No."

Emma stood beside me.

"Is the wedding over?"

Claire looked at her.

"For today."

Emma took my hand.

We left together.

That night, I put the girls to bed.

Emma stopped me.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Did I ruin Dad's wedding?"

"No."

"Did you?"

I smiled sadly.

"No."

"Then who did?"

"The adults did a long time ago."

She considered that.

Then nodded.

I kissed her forehead.

At midnight, someone knocked.

Ryan.

I stepped outside.

He looked exhausted.

"Claire ended the engagement."

"I'm sorry."

He seemed surprised.

"You are?"

"I'm sorry for everyone who's hurting. That's different from wanting you back."

He nodded.

"I know."

We sat on the porch.

Ryan told me he was going to report what he'd learned about Daniel, though the age of the case might complicate prosecution.

Claire had agreed.

"She's finally ready to say what happened."

"Good."

Ryan looked toward the house.

"Emma was brave today."

"Too brave."

"I did that to her."

"Partly."

"I want to fix it."

"You can't fix the past."

"Then the future."

That was different.

I looked at him.

"Start by being her father. Not mine."

He nodded.

Before leaving, he handed me a small box.

Inside was Hope's hospital bracelet.

Not Claire's.

Hope's.

"Where did you get this?"

"The hospital mailed it with some belongings months ago. I couldn't bring myself to give it to you."

I touched the tiny band.

Printed across it:

BABY GIRL BENNETT.

I cried.

Ryan didn't touch me.

He simply sat nearby until I stopped.

The next morning, Emma found me holding the bracelet.

"Is that Hope's?"

"Yes."

She sat beside me.

"Can we keep it somewhere special?"

"We can."

We placed it in a memory box with the knitted hat.

Then Emma brought Ryan's old phone.

"Can we delete the recordings?"

I looked at her.

"Do you want to?"

She nodded.

"They make me angry."

One by one, we deleted them.

The affair.

The lies.

The hospital.

Not because they hadn't happened.

Because my daughter didn't need to carry evidence of adult failures.

Only one recording remained.

Unknown date.

Emma frowned.

"I never heard this one."

I pressed play.

A man's voice spoke.

Not Ryan.

Not anyone I immediately recognized.

"Claire, your mother thinks this is over. It isn't."

Emma looked at me.

Then the voice said his name.

Daniel Bennett.

And the recording ended with four words:

"I'm coming back for you."

At that exact moment, my doorbell rang.

I looked through the window.

May you like

An older man stood on my porch.

Ryan's uncle Daniel had come home...
