Chapter 5 - The Father Who Took His Son

I called Julian.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then Ethan texted.
MOM I'M OKAY.
I called immediately.
He answered.
“Ethan!”
“Mom, I’m okay.”
“Where are you?”
“With Dad.”
“Put him on.”
Julian took the phone.
“Claire.”
“What the hell are you doing?”
“Protecting Ethan.”
“By kidnapping him?”
“He came willingly.”
“He’s ten!”
Julian was silent.
“Where are you?”
“I can’t tell you.”
I nearly screamed.
Then he said, “Daniel contacted me.”
Everything stopped.
Daniel had sent Julian a message minutes before disappearing.
He claimed someone else controlled Charles.
Someone who had been part of Harbor Point from the beginning.
Thomas Hart.
My father.
Alive.
Another dead parent.
Another lie.
I almost laughed from sheer disbelief.
Julian said Daniel had instructed him to bring Ethan to an old Mercer lake house.
“Why Ethan?”
“Because Ethan has something.”
“The card?”
“No.”
Julian lowered his voice.
“Something inside the gift box.”
I remembered the silver recorder.
The black presentation box.
“What?”
“The box has a false bottom.”
Ethan had discovered it after the wedding.
Inside was a brass key.
A number engraved on it.
Evelyn recognized the number immediately.
A safe-deposit box.
She had created it with my father decades earlier.
Federal agents accompanied us to the bank.
Box 317 contained no money.
Only documents.
Hundreds of pages.
Names.
Accounts.
Payments.
And one sealed letter.
CLAIRE.
My father’s handwriting.
I opened it.
Claire,
If you are reading this, then every lie we told has failed.
I participated in Harbor Point.
I told myself I was protecting your mother.
Then I told myself I was protecting you.
The truth is simpler.
I was afraid.
I helped Charles hide money.
When Evelyn tried to expose us, I chose Charles.
That choice cost me my family.
Years later, I tried to undo what I had done.
Charles discovered it.
So I disappeared.
I do not deserve your forgiveness.
But Ethan deserves freedom from what we created.
The trust belongs to the victims.
Return it.
Then burn the Mercer empire to the ground.
—Dad
I sat inside the bank vault and cried.
Not because my father was dead.
Because for the first time, I understood he might still be alive.
Evelyn confirmed it.
Thomas had contacted her six months earlier.
He wanted to testify.
Then vanished.
Daniel had been helping him.
That changed everything.
Daniel was not Charles’s loyal operative anymore.
He had switched sides.
The blood in his car suggested Charles’s people had discovered it.
We raced toward the lake house.
Police surrounded the property.
Julian’s car was outside.
So was another vehicle.
The front door stood open.
Inside, Ethan was safe.
Julian held him behind a kitchen island.
Across the room stood Daniel.
His shoulder was bleeding.
Beside him was an older man.
My father.
Thomas.
He looked at me.
“Claire.”
I did not run into his arms.
I had learned too much for that.
“Where have you been?”
“Trying to fix what I broke.”
“Everyone says that.”
He flinched.
Good.
Daniel explained.
Charles had planned to take the forty-two million and disappear permanently.
Thomas and Daniel had been collecting evidence.
The wedding gave them an opportunity.
But Charles learned about the plan.
The forged transfer had actually been Daniel’s attempt to move the money into a frozen restitution account before Charles could steal it.
My signature had been used because the trust required it.
“You forged my name.”
“Yes.”
“That’s still a crime.”
“Yes.”
He did not excuse it.
For the first time that night, someone simply admitted what he had done.
Federal agents entered.
Thomas surrendered.
Daniel surrendered.
Julian handed Ethan to me.
I hugged my son until he complained he could not breathe.
Then I looked at Julian.
“You took him without telling me.”
“I know.”
“Never again.”
“Never.”
He meant it.
But trust does not return because someone finally tells the truth.
Outside, police lights illuminated the trees.
Evelyn approached Thomas.
They stared at each other across thirty years of regret.
No embrace.
No romantic reunion.
Just history.
Then an agent came toward us.
“We found something.”
Charles had been arrested hours earlier.
But his phone contained a scheduled message.
It had just been delivered to an unknown recipient.
The message read:
THEY FOUND 317. FINISH IT.
The agent checked the recipient.
His face changed.
“What?” I asked.
He turned the screen toward me.
May you like
The message had been sent to Vanessa.
And at that exact moment, Julian’s new wife stepped out from behind the lake house holding a gun.
