Chapter 3 - The Secret Behind Sophia Vance

The Obsidian Room had never been this quiet.

Not even during the most dangerous meetings.

Not even when powerful men negotiated deals that could destroy entire companies.

Because silence inside that room usually meant control.

Tonight, it meant uncertainty.

Broken glass covered the floor.

Expensive furniture had been damaged.

The smell of smoke still lingered in the air.

But the thing everyone was focused on was not the destruction.

It was the woman standing beside Julian Blackwood.

Sophia Vance.

A waitress who had walked into a deadly situation and walked out as the only person who changed the outcome.

Julian had spent years surrounded by people who wanted something from him.

Money.

Power.

Protection.

Respect.

Everyone who approached him had a reason.

But Sophia was different.

She had nothing to gain.

At least, that was what made no sense.

Julian looked at her carefully.

“You expect me to believe you’re just a waitress?”

Sophia placed the weapon on the table.

Her movements were calm.

Controlled.

“I never said I was just anything.”

Julian studied her answer.

Interesting.

Most people would explain themselves.

Most people would try to prove they were innocent.

Sophia did neither.

She simply stood there, accepting that he would question her.

Because she knew he should.

“You knew how to fight,” Julian said.

Sophia looked toward the damaged restaurant.

“I knew enough.”

“That wasn’t enough.”

His voice became more serious.

“You moved like someone who has spent years preparing for situations like this.”

Sophia remained silent.

That silence told Julian more than words could.

He had built his entire empire by understanding people.

And right now, the most dangerous person in the room was not Marcus.

It was the woman refusing to reveal who she really was.

Julian walked toward one of the fallen chairs and picked up his jacket.

Inside the room, his remaining security team finally arrived.

They had been held outside after Marcus’s men blocked the entrance.

The guards rushed in.

“Mr. Blackwood!”

Julian raised a hand.

“Stop.”

The guards immediately froze.

Their eyes moved toward Sophia.

They did not know whether she was a threat.

Julian looked at them.

“She’s with me.”

The statement surprised everyone.

Including Sophia.

She looked at him.

“You don’t know me.”

Julian adjusted his jacket.

“No.”

A pause.

“But you saved my life.”

Sophia looked away.

“That doesn’t mean you should trust me.”

Julian almost smiled.

“Good.”

She looked back.

“Good?”

“I don’t trust people who want to be trusted.”

For the first time, Sophia saw something different in him.

Not the criminal.

Not the man everyone feared.

A person who understood caution.

That made him more dangerous.

And somehow more honest.

Julian turned toward his security team.

“Find Marcus.”

One of the guards nodded.

“Alive?”

Julian’s expression became cold.

“Yes.”

The guard hesitated.

Julian continued.

“I want answers before consequences.”

Everyone understood.

Marcus Thorne had not simply betrayed him.

He had exposed a weakness.

And Julian Blackwood hated weakness.

But before the guards left, Julian looked back at Sophia.

“Come with me.”

Sophia immediately shook her head.

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Julian noticed.

“Why?”

“Because staying near you is dangerous.”

Julian looked around.

“You just stood in the middle of six armed men.”

“That was different.”

“How?”

Sophia hesitated.

Because the answer was complicated.

Because she knew exactly what happened when she became involved with powerful people.

People like Julian.

People who attracted enemies everywhere they went.

“I don’t want attention.”

Julian studied her face.

There it was.

Not fear.

Something else.

Experience.

She was not afraid of danger.

She was afraid of what came after.

Before he could ask another question, one of his men approached.

“Mr. Blackwood.”

Julian turned.

“We found something.”

The guard held a small device.

A phone.

Marcus’s phone.

“He left it behind.”

Julian took it.

His expression changed slightly.

Sophia noticed.

“What?”

Julian unlocked the screen.

There were messages.

Encrypted conversations.

Photos.

Financial records.

But one thing caught his attention.

A file with a name.

SOPHIA VANCE.

The room became silent again.

Sophia saw the screen.

And for the first time that night, she looked genuinely shocked.

Julian looked at her.

“You want to explain this?”

Sophia stepped closer.

Her eyes moved across the phone.

She looked confused.

“That’s impossible.”

Julian watched her carefully.

“Why?”

“Because nobody should know that name.”

The answer was quiet.

Almost a whisper.

Julian lowered the phone.

“Then maybe it’s time you tell me why.”

Sophia looked away.

For years, she had built her life around one idea.

The past was dead.

Her old identity was gone.

The person she used to be disappeared.

But now someone had brought it back.

And that person was Marcus Thorne.

Julian noticed her hesitation.

“Sophia.”

She looked at him.

That was the first time he said her name.

Not as a question.

Not as an accusation.

As if he wanted her to know he was listening.

Finally, she spoke.

“I wasn’t always a waitress.”

Nobody moved.

Julian waited.

“I worked for people who don’t officially exist.”

The guards exchanged looks.

Sophia continued.

“People who trained others to disappear.”

Julian’s expression became more serious.

“What kind of training?”

Sophia looked at her own hands.

Hands that had carried plates.

Hands that had held weapons.

Hands that had spent years pretending to be ordinary.

“Survival.”

The word carried weight.

“My father was involved in a classified security program.”

Julian listened carefully.

“He taught me how to defend myself.”

She paused.

“But after he died, I learned the truth.”

“What truth?”

Sophia looked directly at him.

“He wasn’t just training me.”

A silence.

“He was preparing me because he knew someone would come after him.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed.

“And they did?”

Sophia nodded slowly.

“Years ago.”

The restaurant suddenly felt colder.

“What happened?”

Sophia looked toward the broken windows.

“My entire life disappeared overnight.”

Julian waited.

“My father was accused of betrayal.”

She swallowed.

“He was killed.”

“And you?”

“I was supposed to be next.”

The words were simple.

But Julian understood the meaning.

Someone powerful had tried to erase her.

Someone who had enough influence to make a person vanish.

“That’s why you became a waitress?”

Sophia nodded.

“I needed a life nobody would notice.”

Julian looked at her.

“And Marcus found you.”

Sophia’s expression hardened.

“Yes.”

That explained everything.

Marcus had not accidentally discovered a waitress with unusual skills.

He had known exactly who she was.

But why?

Julian walked toward the table.

He looked again at the phone.

The file.

The messages.

The hidden connection.

“Marcus wasn’t planning to only kill me tonight.”

Sophia looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

Julian held up the phone.

“He had information about you.”

A pause.

“He was looking for you.”

Sophia felt a cold feeling move through her.

Because there was only one reason someone would search for her after all these years.

The same reason people had hunted her family.

The same reason her father died.

“They know I’m alive.”

Julian looked at her.

“Who?”

Sophia didn’t answer immediately.

Because saying the name would make it real.

But then she realized something.

Running had never protected her.

It had only delayed the moment when the past returned.

So she finally spoke.

“The Black Meridian.”

Julian’s expression changed.

A rare reaction.

Recognition.

Because he knew that name.

Everyone in his world knew it.

A secret organization that operated beyond normal criminal groups.

A network of power, information, and influence.

A group nobody fought against unless they were ready to lose everything.

Julian looked at Sophia.

“You’ve been hiding from them.”

“Yes.”

“And now they know where you are.”

“Yes.”

A long silence followed.

Then Julian did something Sophia did not expect.

He picked up his jacket.

And stood beside her.

“You should leave the city.”

Sophia looked surprised.

“You’re telling me to run?”

“No.”

Julian looked toward the entrance.

“I’m telling you that if they are coming…”

His eyes became cold.

“They’re going to come through me first.”

Sophia stared at him.

“Why would you do that?”

Julian looked back at her.

“Because tonight you saved my life.”

A pause.

“And because Marcus made one mistake.”

“What mistake?”

Julian’s expression hardened.

“He thought you were invisible.”

Outside, the city lights continued shining.

But somewhere in the darkness, someone had already learned one important truth.

Sophia Vance was alive.

And Julian Blackwood was standing between her and the people who wanted her gone.

For the first time in years, Sophia was no longer running alone.

But she also knew something else.

The people hunting her would not stop.

May you like

They never had.

And now they had two targets instead of one.
