Chapter 6 - The Night They Came Back

The woman behind the door was sixty years old.
Thin.
Gray threaded through dark hair.
A scar ran from her temple to the edge of her jaw.
Vincent did not recognize her at first.
Emma did.
Not from memory.
From the shape of her eyes.
Her own eyes.
“Vivian,” Vincent whispered.
The woman covered her mouth.
“Vince.”
Everything in him broke.
He crossed the distance.
Vivian stepped into his arms.
For several seconds, Emma forgot every threat around them.
She forgot Daniel’s gun.
Forgot the ledger.
Forgot Carlo.
She watched a brother hold the sister he had buried eleven years earlier.
Then Vivian looked at her.
The reunion ended.
Her face went completely still.
“Emma?”
Emma could not answer.
Vivian stepped closer.
“Rebecca named you Emma.”
“You knew?”
Tears filled Vivian’s eyes.
“I chose it.”
Emma backed away.
“No.”
“Please.”
“No.”
Vincent stepped between them.
“Give her space.”
Vivian nodded.
Emma looked at Daniel.
“You kidnapped Sofia to bring me here.”
“No,” Vivian said.
Emma turned.
“Then who did?”
Vivian’s face hardened.
“Carlo’s brother.”
Emma stared.
“Carlo has a brother?”
“Half brother. Matteo Bellini.”
Vincent swore.
“He disappeared fifteen years ago.”
“He didn’t disappear,” Vivian said. “Your father hid him.”
“Why?”
“Because Matteo ran the part of the organization even Salvatore didn’t want connected to the Moretti name.”
Emma looked at the ledger.
Human trafficking.
Bribery.
Blackmail.
That suddenly felt possible.
“Where is Carlo?”
Vivian nodded toward Daniel.
Daniel lowered his weapon.
“We kept him alive because he was helping us.”
Vincent stared.
“You were working with Carlo?”
“Yes.”
“Then why make it look like he kidnapped Sofia?”
“We didn’t.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Matteo did.”
Emma felt the pieces shift.
“Then why did Carlo know about the key?”
“Because Carlo planted it on Sofia before helping her escape.”
Vivian answered.
“He could not openly betray Matteo. Not until Sofia was safe.”
Vincent looked sick.
“Carlo saved her?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because he knew someone inside your house was feeding Matteo information.”
Vincent went still.
“Who?”
Vivian looked at Marco.
Emma’s stomach dropped.
Marco slowly lowered his gun.
Vincent turned.
“Marco?”
Marco looked ashamed.
“I had no choice.”
Vincent’s face emptied.
“You always have a choice.”
“They had my son.”
Vincent stopped.
Marco’s voice broke.
“For six months.”
Emma stared.
“You have a son?”
“Thirteen.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
Marco looked at Vincent.
“Matteo said if I told you, Luca died.”
Vincent’s rage faded into something worse.
Understanding.
“Why Sofia?”
Marco swallowed.
“To force Carlo to find the ledger.”
Emma looked at Vivian.
“And me?”
Vivian stepped closer.
“Rebecca hid the ledger with you because no one knew who you were.”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“Apparently everyone knows now.”
“They only learned six months ago.”
“How?”
“Rebecca’s old medical records were digitized.”
Emma closed her eyes.
Something mundane.
A database.
Twenty-eight years of secrecy destroyed by paperwork.
“Who was my father?”
The question escaped before she could stop it.
Vivian looked away.
Emma’s stomach twisted.
“Tell me.”
Vivian’s voice became quiet.
“Carlo.”
Vincent’s head snapped around.
Emma stared.
“No.”
Vivian nodded.
“Carlo Bellini is your biological father.”
Emma felt nothing.
That was worse than pain.
“You married him?”
“Years later.”
“He didn’t know?”
“No.”
“How could he not know?”
“I was nineteen. Terrified. Pregnant. Salvatore would have killed him if he knew.”
“Why?”
“Because Carlo was nobody then. A driver’s son.”
Emma sat down.
Everything seemed absurd.
Carlo.
The nervous man at the lodge.
The man taken because he knew too much.
Her father.
“Does he know now?”
Vivian nodded.
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
Emma laughed once.
“So everyone gets six months and I get six minutes.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Stop saying that.”
Vivian flinched.
Emma stood.
“Where is he?”
Daniel answered.
“Matteo has him at the old Blackridge service lodge.”
Emma stared.
“Blackridge?”
“The abandoned building three miles from where you work.”
The location.
Sofia had not wandered to Emma by accident.
Carlo had guided her toward the only place he believed Emma would be.
“What happens now?”
Vincent took the ledger.
“We end it.”
Vivian looked at him.
“That is exactly what your father would say.”
Vincent stared at her.
“I’m not him.”
“Then prove it.”
“How?”
“Police.”
Daniel laughed.
“Half the local department is in the ledger.”
“Federal.”
Emma said it.
Everyone looked at her.
“Send copies everywhere.”
Vincent’s eyes narrowed.
“Everywhere?”
“FBI. State attorney general. Reporters. Anyone who can’t all be bought at once.”
Daniel smiled.
“That was Rebecca’s plan.”
Emma looked at him.
“What?”
“She left instructions with the tapes.”
Emma grabbed one.
A label read:
IF THEY COME FOR EMMA.
Her mother had prepared for this.
Even dead, Rebecca was still protecting her.
Emma’s eyes filled.
Vincent touched her shoulder.
She did not pull away.
Three hours later, copies of the ledger were encrypted and sent to multiple destinations with timed release instructions.
If Vincent failed to cancel the release by sunrise, everything became public.
Then they went to Blackridge.
Emma argued that she should stay behind.
Vincent agreed.
Then Emma came anyway.
“You’re impossible,” he told her.
“So you keep saying.”
The old service lodge sat beneath a ridge hidden by pine trees.
No lights.
No vehicles.
Daniel knew a rear entrance.
They entered through the basement.
Emma heard voices upstairs.
Carlo.
Then another man.
Matteo.
“You should have stayed loyal,” Matteo said.
Carlo laughed weakly.
“To who?”
“To blood.”
“You kidnapped my granddaughter.”
Emma stopped.
Granddaughter.
Hearing it made the truth real in a way the letter had not.
Matteo answered.
“She wasn’t supposed to be hurt.”
“She nearly froze.”
“She was leverage.”
“That makes it worse.”
Vincent moved toward the stairs.
Emma caught his arm.
“Wait.”
A third voice spoke.
Marco.
Emma looked behind her.
Marco was gone.
Vincent swore.
Upstairs, Matteo said, “You brought Moretti?”
Marco answered.
“Yes.”
“And Emma?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
Vincent’s face became deadly.
Marco had betrayed them again.
They moved upstairs.
The room opened into an old dining hall.
Carlo sat tied to a chair.
Matteo stood behind him.
Marco stood near the door.
Then Emma saw the boy.
Thirteen.
Hands bound.
Marco’s son.
Luca.
Now she understood.
Marco looked at Vincent.
“I’m sorry.”
Matteo smiled.
“There he is.”
Vincent stepped forward.
“Let them go.”
“Ledger.”
“Released at sunrise.”
Matteo’s smile vanished.
“What?”
“If anything happens to any of us, the full ledger goes public.”
“You’re bluffing.”
Vivian walked into the room.
“No.”
Matteo’s face went pale.
“You.”
“Hello, Matteo.”
For one second, every secret in the room seemed to breathe.
Then Matteo grabbed Luca.
Gun to the boy’s head.
Marco moved.
“Don’t.”
Matteo shouted.
Emma saw Carlo working one hand free from the rope.
Vincent saw it too.
Nobody looked at him.
Matteo backed toward the door.
“Give me the drive.”
Emma pulled it from her pocket.
Vincent whispered, “Emma, no.”
She held it up.
“You want this?”
Matteo stared.
“Yes.”
“Let the boy go.”
“Give it to me first.”
Emma moved closer.
One step.
Two.
Carlo’s hand came free.
Three.
Matteo reached.
Emma dropped the drive.
His eyes followed it.
Carlo exploded from the chair.
Vincent moved.
Marco grabbed Luca.
Daniel hit Matteo from the side.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Emma dropped.
Chaos.
Then silence.
Matteo lay on the floor.
Vincent stood over him.
Gun aimed.
Matteo laughed.
“Do it.”
Vincent’s finger tightened.
Vivian whispered, “Vince.”
He looked at his sister.
Then at Sofia’s kidnapper.
Then lowered the gun.
“No.”
Sirens sounded outside.
Federal agents.
Emma exhaled.
Carlo turned toward her.
For the first time, father and daughter stood face to face knowing exactly who they were.
His mouth opened.
“Emma.”
She stared at him.
Before he could say another word, a federal agent entered.
“Vincent Moretti?”
Vincent turned.
The agent held up a warrant.
“You need to come with us.”
Emma looked at Vincent.
His face went still.
“What charge?”
The agent answered.
“The murder of Salvatore Moretti.”
Vivian whispered, “No.”
Vincent held out his hands.
May you like
Emma stared.
The story she thought had ended had just opened another door.
