Chapter 6 - The Enemy Inside the Family

A gunshot echoed through the hidden basement, and a man whispered:
"Cara... don't trust him."
When Adrian Voss rushed toward the underground room, he found the missing evidence his father had hidden for seven years.
But one final recording revealed the impossible:
"Adrian ordered the accident."
Adrian finally realized someone had been controlling the truth from the beginning.
And the person closest to him knew exactly how to destroy him.
The basement door slammed open.
Everyone turned.
A man stood above us in the darkness.
For one terrifying second, I thought it was Adrian's enemy.
I thought someone had found us.
But then the emergency lights revealed his face.
One of Adrian's own guards.
The same man who had been protecting him all night.
He held a gun.
Pointed directly at Adrian.
Nobody spoke.
Not even Adrian.
Because betrayal always sounded different when it came from someone you trusted.
"Put the weapon down," Adrian said.
The guard didn't move.
His hand shook slightly.
Not from fear.
From hesitation.
"Cole," Adrian said quietly.
The man's eyes changed.
"You still remember my name."
Adrian stared at him.
"I remember everyone who has worked for me."
Cole laughed bitterly.
"That's your problem."
The room became silent.
"You remember names," Cole continued. "But you never remember what people sacrifice for you."
Adrian took one step forward.
"Who sent you?"
Cole looked at me.
And my stomach dropped.
Because once again, I was the reason everyone was looking.
"Cara knows."
I froze.
"No."
Cole's expression softened.
"You really don't remember."
I shook my head.
"I don't know you."
"You were seven years old."
The room disappeared.
Seven years old.
My childhood.
The missing pieces.
The memories my mind had buried.
Cole lowered the gun slightly.
"Your father didn't die on that road."
My breathing stopped.
"I know."
The words came out before I realized I said them.
Everyone looked at me.
Because some part of me had always known.
Some part of me had never believed the story.
Cole continued.
"Your father survived the crash."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Adrian looked at her.
"You knew?"
She didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
Adrian's expression hardened.
"You knew he was alive?"
Evelyn whispered:
"For a short time."
The anger in Adrian's face disappeared.
Replaced by confusion.
"What does that mean?"
Before Evelyn could respond, Cole spoke.
"Your father didn't run away."
He looked at me.
"He was taken."
My hands went cold.
"By who?"
Cole looked at Adrian.
Nobody needed to say the name.
Everyone already knew.
Isabella.
The woman who smiled beside Adrian.
The woman who planned his death.
The woman who had spent years hiding the truth.
But something still didn't make sense.
"Why would she keep my father alive?"
Cole looked at the video playing on the computer.
"Because your father had something she needed."
Adrian picked up the memory card.
"The evidence."
Cole nodded.
"Your father created a backup."
The room became tense.
"What kind of backup?" Adrian asked.
"Insurance."
Cole looked at him.
"In case someone inside your organization betrayed you."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"And he trusted Cara with it?"
"No."
Cole looked at me.
"He trusted her mother."
My heart stopped.
"My mother?"
Cole nodded.
"Your mother was the only person your father believed Isabella couldn't control."
I thought about my mother.
The woman who always looked afraid whenever someone mentioned my father's name.
The woman who told me to stay away from questions.
The woman who burned old photographs.
She wasn't hiding the past from me.
She was hiding me from the past.
"Where is the rest of the evidence?" Adrian asked.
Cole looked toward the computer.
"The final file."
Everyone turned.
The screen had frozen.
One file remained locked.
No title.
No date.
Just one word.
"HOME."
Adrian approached.
"Password?"
Cole looked at me.
My heart sank.
"No."
He nodded.
"Your father chose it."
I stared at the screen.
"I don't know it."
Cole stepped closer.
"You do."
I shook my head.
"I don't."
"You've said it thousands of times."
My mind searched through memories.
My childhood.
My father.
The small things.
The things that didn't seem important.
Then I remembered.
A phrase.
Something my father always said whenever I was scared.
A phrase he whispered when I couldn't sleep.
I moved toward the keyboard.
My fingers hovered above the keys.
I typed.
The screen unlocked.
Everyone watched.
A video appeared.
But this one was different.
It wasn't my father sitting alone.
It was a recording from inside a car.
A hidden camera.
The date appeared.
Seven years ago.
The night of the accident.
My father was driving.
Someone was sitting beside him.
I leaned closer.
The person turned toward the camera.
And I stopped breathing.
Because it wasn't Isabella.
It wasn't Marcus.
It was Adrian.
The room went completely silent.
Adrian stepped back.
"No."
I looked at him.
My mind refused to understand.
My father had trusted him.
My father had worked for him.
Why was he there?
The video continued.
My father's voice came through.
"If anything happens to me, Adrian is the only person who knows the truth."
Adrian closed his eyes.
Then another voice appeared.
His own.
Younger.
Angrier.
"I warned you not to expose them."
I looked at Adrian.
The man standing in front of me now.
The man who saved me.
The man who believed me.
The man I thought was searching for the truth.
The video continued.
My father's voice became desperate.
"You don't understand what you're doing."
Then Adrian's younger voice said:
"Nobody survives when they betray this family."
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
I couldn't move.
Because the impossible truth was sitting in front of me.
Adrian Voss wasn't just connected to my father's death.
He was there.
The man I had saved.
The man who had protected me.
The man I had trusted.
Maybe he was the reason my life was destroyed.
Adrian looked at me.
"Cara..."
I stepped backward.
"Don't."
His face changed.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Because he knew what I was thinking.
Before anyone could speak, the basement lights flickered.
A new message appeared on the computer screen.
Not from the hidden file.
Not from the system.
From someone remotely accessing it.
One sentence appeared.
May you like
"Now ask Adrian what happened after the crash."
Then the basement door locked from the outside.
