Chapter 4 - The Enemy Inside the Walls

Anna had always thought monsters would be easy to recognize.
She imagined monsters as cruel faces in dark places.
People who shouted.
People who threatened.
People who looked exactly like the danger they carried.
But the man standing in the middle of Ali’s Diner did not look like a monster.
That was what made him terrifying.
He looked normal.
His expensive coat was perfectly arranged despite the rain outside. His dark hair was neatly combed. His voice was calm. His expression was almost gentle.
The kind of person strangers trusted.
The kind of person people invited inside.
The kind of person who could destroy someone’s life while smiling.
Anna stood between him and Daniel, still holding the kitchen knife.
She knew how ridiculous it looked.
A twenty-two-year-old waitress with a cheap uniform and a kitchen knife facing a man who clearly had power.
But she also knew something else.
The people who had the most power often expected everyone else to be afraid.
And Anna was tired of being afraid.
The stranger looked at the knife.
Then at her.
“You really don’t understand what’s happening, do you?”
Anna tightened her grip.
“Probably not.”
Daniel looked at her.
A faint expression of concern crossed his face.
“Anna.”
She ignored him.
The stranger noticed.
Interesting.
That was the word written across his face.
He was studying her.
Not like an enemy.
Like a puzzle.
“You walked into this without knowing anything,” he said.
Anna replied immediately.
“I knew enough.”
The man raised an eyebrow.
“Enough?”
She nodded toward the twins.
“I knew two babies were in danger.”
Then toward Daniel.
“I knew he was hurt.”
Her eyes returned to him.
“And I knew you came here looking for someone who couldn’t defend himself.”
The stranger was silent.
Daniel slowly pushed himself higher against the cabinet.
“Ethan.”
The name filled the room.
The stranger’s expression changed slightly.
Not much.
But enough.
Anna noticed.
“You’re Ethan.”
The man looked at Daniel.
“You told her my name?”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“She figured it out.”
Ethan looked almost amused.
“Of course she did.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Why are you here?”
Ethan’s face became serious.
“You know why.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You want me to believe you came here for the children?”
A pause.
“I won’t.”
Anna looked between them.
There was history here.
Years of it.
The kind of history that did not disappear after one argument.
The kind that left scars.
Ethan took a slow breath.
“You always did assume the worst.”
Daniel gave a bitter smile.
“From you? I learned.”
The words hit harder than Anna expected.
Because Daniel did not sound angry.
He sounded hurt.
That was different.
Ethan looked away for a moment.
Then back at him.
“You think I betrayed you.”
“You sold me out.”
“I saved you.”
Daniel laughed quietly.
The sound was painful.
“You call that saving?”
Anna felt the room becoming heavier.
She looked at Daniel.
The man who had ruled an empire.
The man everyone feared.
But right now, he looked like someone remembering the moment he lost everything.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand what happened.”
“I understand perfectly.”
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“You gave them my location.”
Anna’s breath caught.
That was how they found him.
Ethan had told them.
The person closest to him had handed him over.
Ethan remained calm.
“I had no choice.”
Daniel looked away.
“Everyone always says that.”
The sentence was quiet.
Almost broken.
Anna looked at him.
She had heard those words before.
From adults who promised they would stay.
From people who walked away and claimed they had reasons.
No choice.
Sometimes those words were just another way of saying someone else’s pain was less important.
Ethan noticed her expression.
“You think you understand him.”
Anna looked at him.
“I think I understand being abandoned.”
The answer surprised everyone.
Even Daniel.
For a moment, Ethan had nothing to say.
Then the sound of a baby crying broke the silence.
Everyone turned.
One of the twins had woken up.
Anna immediately moved toward them.
The change was instant.
The tension between powerful men disappeared.
Because suddenly, there was only a frightened child.
Anna carefully picked up the baby.
“It’s okay.”
Her voice softened.
“You’re okay.”
The baby calmed slightly.
Daniel watched.
Something in his expression changed.
“You’re good with them.”
Anna looked down.
“I’m not.”
Daniel frowned.
“Yes, you are.”
She shook her head.
“I just know what it feels like when nobody comes.”
The room became quiet.
Daniel looked at her differently.
Not with suspicion.
Not with curiosity.
With understanding.
Because he knew that feeling too.
Ethan watched the exchange carefully.
Then he spoke.
“Daniel.”
His voice was quieter now.
“You need to leave.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
“They found you.”
Ethan glanced toward the window.
“And they won’t stop.”
Anna looked outside.
The black vehicle was still there.
But now she noticed something else.
Another car.
Parked farther away.
Then another.
They were surrounded.
Her stomach dropped.
“How many people are out there?”
Ethan did not answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
“Too many.”
Anna looked at him.
“You knew this would happen.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
“I knew they would come eventually.”
“And you still ran?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
His gaze moved to the twins.
The answer was obvious.
But hearing him say it made it real.
“Because I had to keep them alive.”
Anna looked at the babies.
Then at Daniel.
“You could have asked for help.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“People like me don’t get help.”
Anna frowned.
“People like you?”
He looked away.
“The moment people know who I am, they stop seeing me.”
A pause.
“They see money.”
Another pause.
“Power.”
His voice became softer.
“Fear.”
Anna thought about that.
About how everyone had looked at Daniel tonight.
The man outside.
The people hunting him.
Even Daniel himself.
Everyone saw the empire.
Nobody saw the man.
Until now.
A loud noise came from outside.
A car door closing.
Then another.
Ethan’s expression changed.
“They’re moving.”
Daniel immediately reacted.
“How long?”
“Minutes.”
Anna looked around.
The diner suddenly felt much smaller.
“What happens if they get inside?”
Nobody answered.
She already knew.
Ethan looked at Daniel.
“There is one way out.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“It’s the only way.”
“No.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“You would rather die?”
Daniel looked at the twins.
“No.”
Then at Anna.
A strange silence passed.
Because both men realized something.
Daniel was no longer only protecting his daughters.
He was protecting Anna too.
Ethan noticed.
And for the first time that night, his expression changed from confidence to concern.
“She matters to you already.”
Daniel said nothing.
That silence was enough.
Anna felt her heartbeat quicken.
She wanted to deny it.
She barely knew him.
A few hours ago, he had been a stranger pointing a gun at her.
But somehow, in the middle of chaos, something had changed.
She had seen the man behind the reputation.
And he had seen the person behind her tired eyes.
Ethan stepped back.
“Then this is worse than I thought.”
Anna looked at him.
“What?”
Ethan stared at Daniel.
“You spent your entire life building walls around yourself.”
His voice lowered.
“And somehow, the first person who gets through them is the one person who can be used against you.”
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“No one touches her.”
The words were immediate.
Automatic.
Anna looked at him.
And for the first time, she saw the man everyone feared.
Not because he was dangerous.
Because he was willing to become dangerous for someone else.
Outside, footsteps approached.
Closer.
Closer.
The final lock on the front door shook.
Anna held the baby tighter.
Daniel struggled to stand.
Ethan moved toward the back exit.
Three people.
Three choices.
And one impossible truth.
The wounded stranger she had saved in a dark alley was not running from his enemies anymore.
He was standing to face them.
Because this time…
May you like
He was not fighting for an empire.
He was fighting for a family.
