Chapter 3 - The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Clara forgot how to breathe.

“Dad?”

Silence.

Adrian moved in front of her.

Marcus raised a flashlight.

The beam swept across empty lockers.

Concrete.

A broken chair.

Then a man stepped from behind a support column.

Older.

Thinner.

Gray threaded through his beard.

Daniel Hayes raised both hands.

“Clara.”

She stared.

For eleven years she had imagined this moment impossible.

She had buried him.

She had stood beside a coffin.

She had watched her mother cry until she couldn’t stand.

She had spent birthdays wishing she could hear his laugh one more time.

Now he was ten feet away.

Alive.

Clara crossed the distance and slapped him.

The sound cracked through the corridor.

Daniel accepted it.

Then Clara hit his chest with both fists.

“You were alive?”

“I’m sorry.”

“You were alive?”

“Yes.”

She struck him again.

Daniel caught her wrists gently.

Clara broke.

Not dramatically.

Her anger simply collapsed into grief.

She leaned against him and cried.

Daniel held her.

“I’m sorry,” he repeated.

Adrian turned away, giving them a moment.

Clara eventually stepped back.

“Mom?”

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“She knew I survived.”

Clara froze.

“What?”

“Not at first.”

“You’re telling me my mother knew?”

“She found out three years later.”

“And she never told me?”

“She was protecting you.”

“Stop saying that!”

Her voice echoed.

“You people keep lying to me and calling it protection.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.”

Adrian approached.

“Daniel.”

The older man looked at him.

“You look like Salvatore.”

“So I’ve been told.”

“I’m sorry about your father.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Were you there when he died?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Yes.”

Clara looked between them.

Adrian stepped closer.

“My father was shot in his study.”

“No.”

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“What?”

“He was moved to the study afterward.”

Marcus glanced at Adrian.

Daniel continued.

“Salvatore died at the Aurelia.”

The corridor seemed colder.

Adrian said, “Explain.”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“In 2014, Victor Raines controlled a network of shell companies using construction projects to move money. The Aurelia renovation was one of them.”

Clara looked at the ledger.

“You found out.”

“I found structural compartments that weren’t on the plans. Inside one was a set of financial records.”

“Victor’s records?”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Your father had discovered Victor was stealing from him. Millions. But that wasn’t the worst part.”

“What was?”

“Victor was also paying judges, inspectors, union officials, and police officers.”

Marcus swore quietly.

“Salvatore wanted out,” Daniel said. “He wanted to turn the evidence over.”

Adrian stared.

“My father wanted to cooperate with authorities?”

“He wanted to protect you.”

Adrian gave a bitter smile.

“Everyone apparently did terrible things to protect their children.”

Daniel nodded sadly.

“That night, Salvatore met me beneath the Aurelia. Victor came.”

“And?”

“They fought. Victor fired.”

Adrian’s face went pale.

“He killed my father?”

“Yes.”

“Then why was the body found at home?”

“Victor had people inside the department. They moved him.”

Adrian turned away.

Clara watched his fists close.

For the first time, the powerful Adrian Moretti looked less like a feared crime boss and more like a son who had just been told his father’s death was a lie.

“What happened to you?” Clara asked.

Daniel looked at her.

“I ran.”

“For eleven years?”

“I was injured. Victor believed I died in the same incident. Salvatore’s people arranged the funeral.”

“The coffin?”

“Weighted.”

Clara felt sick.

“You let me bury an empty box.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I watched from across the cemetery.”

She stepped backward.

“No.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You watched me?”

“I wanted to run to you.”

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor had already threatened you.”

Clara stopped.

Daniel pulled a folded photograph from his coat.

It showed Clara at fourteen walking home from school.

A red circle had been drawn around her.

On the back:

NEXT TIME SHE DISAPPEARS.

Clara stared at it.

Daniel said, “I left because staying meant risking you.”

Adrian took the photograph.

“Victor kept watching her?”

“For years.”

“Why now?”

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

“Because Salvatore hid the final ledger somewhere inside the Aurelia. Victor believes I know where.”

“The chandelier,” Clara said.

Daniel nodded.

“He rigged it to kill Adrian and flush me out.”

“Why would killing Adrian help?”

“Because Salvatore left instructions.”

Adrian’s expression sharpened.

“What instructions?”

“If Adrian died, control of a certain holding company would automatically transfer.”

“To whom?”

Daniel looked at Clara.

Her stomach dropped.

“No.”

Adrian frowned.

“To Clara?”

Daniel nodded.

“Why?”

“Because Salvatore trusted me.”

Clara shook her head.

“That makes no sense.”

“It will.”

Daniel reached into the locker and removed a sealed envelope.

SALVATORE MORETTI.

Adrian took it.

He broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

He read silently.

Clara watched his expression change.

“What does it say?”

Adrian handed her the page.

Daniel Hayes saved my son’s life once.

If I fail to stop Victor, everything needed to expose him will be placed beyond Moretti control.

Daniel’s daughter will hold the key.

Clara looked up.

“What key?”

Daniel pointed to the steel compass.

She picked it up.

He twisted the back.

A tiny compartment opened.

Inside was a brass key.

Marcus whispered, “Locker key?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Bank deposit box.”

“Where?”

Daniel gave the address.

Adrian immediately recognized it.

“That bank closed eight years ago.”

“The vault didn’t.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Your father bought the building.”

Clara laughed softly in disbelief.

Of course he had.

Adrian folded Salvatore’s letter.

“We go now.”

Daniel grabbed his arm.

“No.”

Adrian stared at the hand.

Daniel released him.

“Victor expects that.”

“Then we disappoint him.”

Marcus checked his phone.

“Too late.”

He turned the screen.

News alerts were appearing.

CHANDERLIER COLLAPSE AT MORETTI GALA.

ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION?

WAITER QUESTIONED.

Then another headline appeared.

WOMAN SEEN WITH MORETTI IDENTIFIED AS CLARA HAYES.

Clara’s blood chilled.

Her picture was already online.

Daniel whispered, “He found her.”

Adrian took out his phone.

“We’re moving.”

Suddenly Clara’s phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A text.

YOUR MOTHER LIED TOO.

Then a photograph loaded.

Her mother, Evelyn Hayes, sat tied to a chair.

A clock was visible behind her.

11:32 p.m.

Live.

Clara screamed, “Mom.”

A second message arrived.

BRING THE KEY.

COME ALONE.

MIDNIGHT.

Underneath was an address.

Daniel looked at it.

His face went white.

Adrian asked, “What is that place?”

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“The building where Salvatore Moretti was really killed.”
