Chapter 6 - The Last Man Who Wanted Clara Afraid

Anthony Vale did not want money.

That made him dangerous.

Men who wanted money could negotiate.

Men who wanted power could compromise.

Anthony wanted Dominic Castellano to suffer.

He blamed Dominic for the collapse of everything he had built with Rourke.

He blamed Clara for exposing the network.

Most of all, he hated that the two people he intended to destroy seemed happy.

His opportunity came on a Thursday afternoon.

Clara was coaching six teenagers at the foundation.

“Hands up, Jordan.”

The fifteen-year-old corrected his guard.

“Better.”

Maya worked with another group across the gym.

Ethan sat near reception doing college coursework.

Life had become wonderfully ordinary.

Then the lights went out.

Clara froze.

Emergency lights illuminated.

Maya looked at her.

Both women understood instantly.

“Kids,” Clara said calmly, “locker room. Now.”

No screaming.

No panic.

They had practiced emergency drills.

The students moved.

Ethan stood.

“Clara?”

“Go with them.”

“I’m not leaving you.”

“Ethan.”

He recognized the voice.

The same voice she had used in the hospital.

He obeyed.

Clara moved toward the front entrance.

Locked.

Then a speaker crackled.

Anthony’s voice filled the gym.

“Hello, Scarlet.”

Clara’s stomach dropped.

Maya whispered, “Vale.”

Clara scanned the room.

Cameras.

Doors.

Windows.

“Anthony.”

“Very good.”

“What do you want?”

“Dominic.”

Clara almost laughed.

“Then call him.”

“I already did.”

Her phone rang.

Dominic.

She answered.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“I’m five minutes away.”

“Don’t come.”

Silence.

“Clara.”

“He wants you here.”

“I know.”

“It’s a trap.”

“I know.”

“Then don’t—”

The call ended.

Anthony had jammed the signal.

Clara swore.

Maya approached.

“What’s the plan?”

“Get the kids out.”

“How?”

Clara pointed toward the rear maintenance corridor.

“Old ventilation access.”

“That opening is tiny.”

“They’re kids.”

“What about Ethan?”

Clara looked toward her brother.

He understood.

“No.”

“Ethan—”

“No. I spent four years watching you destroy yourself for me.”

“This isn’t the time.”

“It is exactly the time.”

He stepped closer.

“I’m not helpless anymore.”

Clara stared at him.

Then nodded.

“Help Maya.”

They removed the ventilation cover.

One by one, the students crawled through.

Outside, Dominic’s SUV stopped.

Marco grabbed his arm.

“Boss, wait.”

Dominic looked at the building.

Every instinct told him to rush inside.

Marco said, “That’s what Vale wants.”

“I don’t care.”

“Clara does.”

That stopped him.

Dominic forced himself to think.

Vale wanted emotion.

Recklessness.

The old Dominic would have delivered both.

But Clara had taught him something.

Fighting wasn’t always about throwing the hardest punch.

Sometimes it was about knowing when not to.

“Building plans,” Dominic ordered.

Inside, Clara heard footsteps.

Three armed men entered through a side door.

She and Maya hid behind the ring.

One man passed.

Clara moved.

Fast.

She trapped his wrist, redirected the weapon and drove him silently into the mat.

Maya caught the second.

The third raised his weapon.

Ethan threw a fire extinguisher.

It struck the man’s arm.

Clara closed the distance.

Seconds later all three were down.

She stared at Ethan.

He shrugged.

“Dad taught me stuff too.”

Despite everything, Clara smiled.

Then Anthony appeared.

He held a gun.

“Touching.”

Clara moved between him and Ethan.

Anthony smiled.

“Always protecting the boy.”

“What do you want?”

“I told you.”

“Dominic.”

“And you.”

“Why?”

“Because he changed after meeting you.”

Clara frowned.

Anthony laughed bitterly.

“Dominic used to understand power. Fear. Reputation. Then you appeared.”

“You betrayed him before he met me.”

“Yes.”

“But I might have won.”

“Won what?”

“Chicago.”

Clara shook her head.

“You were never going to win.”

His smile disappeared.

“You know why?”

“Careful.”

“Because nobody trusted you.”

Anthony raised the weapon.

Clara continued.

“Rourke controlled people through fear. You controlled them through greed. Dominic has people who would stand beside him when there’s nothing to gain.”

Anthony’s finger tightened.

“You think he’s a good man?”

“No.”

The answer surprised him.

Clara spoke softly.

“I think he’s trying to become a better one.”

A sound came from above.

Anthony looked up.

Mistake.

Clara moved.

She struck his wrist.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Ethan pulled Maya behind cover.

Anthony hit Clara across the face.

She stumbled.

He grabbed her.

“You ruined everything!”

Clara drove an elbow into his ribs.

He released her.

They struggled.

Anthony was stronger than she expected.

He threw her against the ropes.

She fell.

He reached for the gun.

Then Dominic’s voice came from the entrance.

“Anthony.”

Vale turned.

Dominic stood alone.

Hands visible.

“No weapon,” Dominic said.

Anthony grabbed Clara and pulled her upright.

The gun pressed against her side.

Dominic’s face changed.

Clara saw the old predator appear.

Anthony smiled.

“There he is.”

“Let her go.”

“Come closer.”

Dominic did.

“Stop,” Clara said.

He ignored her.

Anthony laughed.

“She really changed you.”

Dominic looked at Clara.

“Yeah.”

Then at Anthony.

“She did.”

Anthony’s expression twisted.

“You lost your edge.”

“No.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“I learned the difference between strength and insecurity.”

Clara almost smiled.

Anthony pushed the gun harder against her.

Dominic stopped.

“What do you want?”

“You on your knees.”

Marco watched through a side window.

Clara saw him.

Dominic did too.

Anthony didn’t.

Dominic slowly knelt.

Clara stared.

The most feared man in Chicago lowered himself to the floor.

Not because he was weak.

Because her life mattered more than his pride.

Anthony laughed.

Clara understood in that moment exactly how much Dominic had changed.

The man who once challenged a waitress because she embarrassed him was now willing to humiliate himself publicly to keep her alive.

Anthony raised the weapon toward Dominic.

Clara moved.

She trapped his arm.

Marco crashed through the side entrance.

Dominic lunged.

The gun hit the floor.

Anthony reached for it.

Clara kicked it away.

Dominic pinned him.

For one terrible second, Dominic’s fist rose.

Anthony smiled through bloody teeth.

“Do it.”

Dominic froze.

Clara touched his shoulder.

“Dominic.”

He looked at her.

She shook her head.

Not because Anthony deserved mercy.

Because Dominic deserved freedom from becoming exactly what Anthony expected.

Dominic lowered his fist.

Police sirens approached.

Anthony’s smile vanished.

Dominic stood.

“You wanted me to prove I was still the same man.”

He looked down at him.

“Sorry to disappoint you.”

Anthony Vale was arrested.

The children escaped unharmed.

Ethan had a bruised shoulder.

Maya had a cut above her eyebrow.

Clara needed stitches.

Dominic refused to leave her side at the hospital.

At three in the morning, Clara sat on an examination bed.

Dominic stood beside the window.

“You knelt.”

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

“For me.”

“Yes.”

“Dominic Castellano doesn’t kneel.”

“He does now.”

She swallowed.

“You could’ve died.”

“So could you.”

“That’s different.”

“No.”

He approached.

“That’s what you still don’t understand.”

“What?”

“You think your life is somehow less valuable because you’re used to sacrificing it.”

Clara looked away.

He touched her chin gently.

“You don’t have to earn the right to be protected.”

Her eyes filled.

Dominic continued.

“You don’t have to fight every battle alone.”

A tear escaped.

Clara hated crying.

Dominic wiped it away.

“I love you,” he said.

She stared at him.

He seemed almost surprised by his own words.

Then Clara laughed softly through the tears.

“That was terrible timing.”

“I know.”

“I have stitches.”

“I noticed.”

“My brother almost got kidnapped.”

“Also noticed.”

“And this is when you say that?”

“I’ve never done this before.”

“Clearly.”

Dominic smiled.

Clara touched his face.

Then her expression softened.

May you like

“I love you too.”

For once, neither needed another word.
