Chapter 6 - The Vault Beneath the Chapel

Luca made a sound Sadi would never forget.

Not a shout.

Not a threat.

A father’s fear.

They drove to the estate at terrifying speed.

Gabriel called Mercer.

No answer.

Then Salvatore called.

“You have forty minutes.”

Gabriel’s voice remained controlled.

“To do what?”

“Bring Rosa.”

“No.”

“You’re becoming repetitive.”

“And you’re threatening children.”

Salvatore laughed.

“That moral line never troubled our family before.”

“It troubles me.”

The call ended.

Sadi looked at Gabriel.

That sentence mattered.

Perhaps more than he knew.

They entered the chapel through an underground passage Vittorio had built decades earlier.

Rosa remembered the layout.

Sadi stayed close to Gabriel.

“You’re bleeding.”

“I noticed.”

“You could pass out.”

“Then catch me.”

She looked at him.

He gave her a faint smile.

Despite everything, she almost returned it.

Below the chapel, they found the vault.

Mercer stood beside Luca’s daughter, Sofia.

A pistol pressed against the chair.

“Stop.”

Luca froze.

Mercer looked exhausted.

“I didn’t want any of this.”

Gabriel said, “Then release her.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“My wife has cancer.”

Silence.

“Salvatore promised treatment.”

Sadi understood.

That was his method.

Not loyalty.

Desperation.

He found dying people.

Then made their loved ones choose who else should suffer.

Rosa stepped forward.

“He doesn’t have miracle treatments.”

Mercer’s eyes flickered.

“He showed me evidence.”

“He showed Marco evidence too.”

Marco stood behind them.

Mercer looked at him.

Marco slowly shook his head.

“He lied.”

Mercer’s gun lowered slightly.

Luca moved.

Three seconds later, Sofia was free.

Mercer was on the ground.

Nobody killed him.

Gabriel ordered it.

“Enough people have died for my grandfather.”

Inside Vittorio’s vault, they found the second formula.

Dr. Cho prepared the treatment.

Gabriel received the first dose before sunrise.

By afternoon, his fever began falling.

For the first time in weeks, the edge of black tissue stopped spreading.

Sadi sat beside his bed.

“You’re going to live.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“You sound disappointed.”

“I’m thinking about how many tables you’re going to make me serve when you recover.”

“You knocked one of my men unconscious.”

“He deserved it.”

“He did.”

A pause.

“Would you like a different job?”

Sadi frowned.

“I don’t want charity.”

“I wasn’t offering charity.”

“What were you offering?”

“Someone noticed what twenty surgeons didn’t.”

“I noticed thread.”

“You noticed people.”

His expression became serious.

“I need people who do that.”

Sadi looked away.

“I don’t belong in your world.”

“Neither do I, most days.”

That surprised her.

Before she could answer, Rosa entered.

“We found Salvatore.”

A property outside the city.

Gabriel stood despite everyone objecting.

“This ends tonight.”

But it didn’t end with bullets.

Gabriel brought federal investigators.

Sadi was stunned.

“You called the government?”

“My father spent his life trying to destroy Salvatore’s project quietly.”

Gabriel buttoned his shirt.

“He failed.”

“So?”

“So I’m trying something different.”

The evidence was overwhelming.

Medical records.

Financial transfers.

The fiber.

Mercer’s testimony.

Marco’s testimony.

Rosa.

Teresa.

Antonio.

Salvatore Falcone had survived for decades by convincing everyone that fear was stronger than evidence.

Gabriel decided to test that theory.

They reached Salvatore’s property at midnight.

Agents surrounded it.

Gabriel entered with Sadi and Rosa.

Salvatore sat alone at a dining table.

He was eighty-seven.

Thin.

Elegant.

Smiling.

“My grandson.”

Gabriel stopped across from him.

“It’s over.”

Salvatore looked at Sadi.

“So this is Rosa’s girl.”

Sadi said nothing.

“You ruined twenty years of work because you recognized thread.”

“No.”

Salvatore raised an eyebrow.

Sadi looked at Rosa.

“She taught me to recognize it.”

Something moved in Salvatore’s face.

Defeat, perhaps.

Agents entered.

He did not resist.

As they took him away, he looked back at Gabriel.

“You think handing me to them makes you different from us?”

Gabriel answered calmly.

“Yes.”

Salvatore smiled.

“Then you still don’t know what your father did.”

Gabriel froze.

Salvatore was taken outside.

Rosa looked pale.

Sadi noticed.

“Mom?”

Rosa wouldn’t meet Gabriel’s eyes.

Gabriel stepped toward her.

“What did my father do?”

Rosa whispered, “Gabriel…”

“What?”

She began crying.

Then she reached into her coat and removed a sealed envelope.

Vittorio’s handwriting covered the front.

Gabriel took it.

His name was written there.

Underneath were six words.

FOR MY SON, AFTER SALVATORE IS FOUND.

Gabriel broke the seal.

May you like

He unfolded the first page.

And after reading only one sentence, he looked at Sadi as though everything they knew had just changed.
