Chapter 11 - Sarah Hale’s Secret

Gavin Hale was Edward Vale’s son.
The sweating translator.
The terrified husband.
The man who had nearly sent Victor into an ambush.
None of it had been entirely false.
That made it worse.
They found Gavin at the old freight terminal.
He was alone.
Victor approached without a weapon in his hands.
“Why?”
Gavin laughed bitterly.
“You think this started with Sarah?”
“Didn't it?”
“No.”
Gavin had known his identity since he was sixteen.
Anthony Marlow had arranged his adoption after Edward Vale died.
He had given Gavin a chance at another life.
For years, Gavin took it.
He became a translator.
Married Sarah.
Stayed away from the docks.
Then Marcus found him.
“He wanted a brother.”
Gavin looked toward the river.
“I wanted one too.”
Marcus slowly pulled him into the family history.
At first, Gavin believed Victor’s family had destroyed theirs.
Then he discovered the truth.
Edward Vale had ordered Anthony’s murder.
Marcus knew.
“He didn't want justice,” Gavin said. “He wanted inheritance.”
“Why betray me at dinner?”
“Sarah.”
“That part was real?”
“Every part.”
Gavin's eyes filled.
“I hated myself every second.”
Victor believed him.
Lana could see it.
Gavin had been manipulated from both directions by blood he never chose.
“Where is Marcus?”
Gavin looked at Lana.
“He wants the archive destroyed.”
“It’s already distributed.”
“He doesn't care anymore.”
“Then what?”
Gavin swallowed.
“Revenge.”
Against Victor.
Against Evelyn.
Against Rebecca.
Against every surviving witness.
Sarah arrived unexpectedly.
Gavin stared.
“You shouldn't be here.”
“I've spent three days being told where I should be.”
She walked toward him.
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You nearly got people killed.”
“Yes.”
“You thought kidnapping me gave you permission to destroy yourself.”
Gavin began crying.
Sarah stopped in front of him.
“I love you.”
He looked up.
“That doesn't mean I forgive you.”
His face broke.
“But it means you're going to live long enough to earn whatever comes next.”
She held out her hand.
After a long moment, he took it.
Victor turned away, granting them privacy.
Lana joined him.
“You spared Leo.”
“Yes.”
“You spared Gavin.”
“So far.”
“You're changing.”
Victor looked at her.
“No.”
A faint smile touched his mouth.
“I'm remembering.”
“Remembering what?”
“The man I was supposed to become.”
Before she could answer, Daniel called.
Marcus had taken Evelyn.
Again.
But this time there was no ransom demand.
Only an address.
Hawthorne Grill.
Lana almost laughed.
“Does everyone in this city settle problems at my workplace?”
Victor looked at her.
“Apparently the food is excellent.”
It was the first joke she had heard from him.
She laughed despite herself.
Then they went back.
The restaurant was empty.
Evelyn sat at the original table.
Untied.
Alone.
Victor approached cautiously.
“Mother?”
She looked at him.
“He knows.”
“Knows what?”
Her eyes moved toward Lana.
“The final secret.”
Lana felt cold.
“What secret?”
Evelyn looked ashamed.
“Ingrid wasn't your grandmother.”
Lana stopped.
Rebecca entered behind them.
“What?”
Evelyn whispered, “She was your biological mother.”
Rebecca covered her mouth.
Thomas went pale.
Lana stared at all of them.
“No.”
Evelyn continued.
“Ingrid gave birth to you. Rebecca and Thomas raised you publicly because Ingrid was already marked for death.”
Lana shook her head.
“No.”
Rebecca began crying.
“She made us promise.”
“Then who was my father?”
Nobody answered.
That silence was worse than any answer.
Lana looked at Victor.
His expression changed.
He knew.
“How?”
Victor turned toward Evelyn.
“Tell her.”
Evelyn could barely speak.
“Ingrid loved Anthony before I married him.”
Victor closed his eyes.
Lana understood before the words came.
Anthony Marlow.
Victor’s father.
Her father.
She stepped backward.
Victor was not a stranger connected to her grandmother.
He was her half brother.
Then a slow clap came from the darkened doorway.
May you like
Marcus stepped into the dining room.
And he was holding Anthony Marlow’s original will.
