Chapter 3 - The Brother Who Never Came Home

Lucian did not move.

Evelyn stepped into the room.

Nine years had changed her, but not enough to make recognition difficult.

“You’re lying,” Lucian said.

“I wish I were.”

“Where is he?”

“I don't know.”

Lucian crossed the room so quickly Mara barely saw him move.

He stopped inches from Evelyn.

“Where is my brother?”

Evelyn didn't retreat.

“If I knew, I would have brought him home.”

“Then why contact me?”

“I didn't.”

Lucian’s eyes narrowed.

“The phone.”

“Not mine.”

“Room 417.”

“I received the same message.”

Mara stepped forward.

“So somebody wanted both of you here.”

Evelyn finally noticed her.

“Who are you?”

“The waitress who made several poor life choices tonight.”

Lucian shot her a look.

Mara shrugged.

Evelyn almost smiled.

Then she placed an envelope on the table.

“I received this yesterday.”

Lucian opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Adrian.

Older.

Alive.

Standing beside a newspaper dated six months earlier.

Lucian sat down.

For the first time since Mara met him, he looked completely defenseless.

“My God.”

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“I spent nine years thinking he was dead.”

“Why disappear?”

“Because someone tried to kill me too.”

Lucian looked up.

“When?”

“Three months after the crash.”

She rolled up her sleeve.

A long scar crossed her forearm.

“I left because whoever killed Adrian knew I had helped him investigate.”

“What investigation?”

“The Vale Foundation.”

Lucian stared.

“Our charity?”

“It wasn't always a charity.”

She explained.

Adrian had discovered that money moving through several family-controlled shell companies was being diverted into illegal accounts.

Millions.

He had suspected someone inside the Vale organization.

Someone trusted.

Before he could identify them, his car went off the bridge.

Celia survived.

Adrian disappeared.

“And Celia?” Mara asked.

“She remembered something.”

Lucian turned.

Evelyn continued.

“She woke in the hospital screaming a name.”

“What name?”

“I never heard it. Your uncle ordered everyone out.”

Lucian stiffened.

“Sebastian?”

“Yes.”

Sebastian Vale had helped Lucian rebuild the family business after Adrian disappeared.

He had been mentor, adviser, almost father.

“No.”

Evelyn gave him a sad look.

“I’m not saying it was Sebastian.”

“But you're thinking it.”

“I’m saying Adrian suspected someone close.”

Lucian paced.

Mara watched him assemble nine years of memories and begin distrusting each one.

His phone rang.

Darius.

Lucian answered.

“What?”

His face changed.

“When?”

He looked at Mara.

“We’re coming.”

“What happened?”

“Celia’s gone.”

Mara's stomach dropped.

“What about Noah?”

“Safe. Darius found him asleep.”

“And Celia?”

“Window open. Fire escape.”

They rushed downstairs.

By the time they reached Mara’s building, Darius had security footage from the shop across the street.

Celia had left voluntarily.

She had walked toward a black sedan.

A man opened the door.

The grainy camera caught only his profile.

Lucian stared at the screen.

“No.”

Mara looked at him.

“You recognize him?”

Lucian replayed the footage.

The man turned.

Older than Lucian.

Dark hair touched with gray.

A familiar face.

Celia had not been kidnapped.

She had run into his arms.

Lucian whispered, “Adrian.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Noah appeared.

“Mara?”

She hugged him.

“Did you see Celia leave?”

“No.”

“Anything unusual?”

He hesitated.

“A woman called.”

Lucian turned.

“What woman?”

“She asked for Mara.”

Mara frowned.

“What did she say?”

Noah handed her a piece of paper.

“I wrote it down.”

Mara read the sentence.

ASK MARA WHY HER FATHER WORKED FOR ADRIAN VALE.

Her hands went cold.

“My father?”

Lucian took the paper.

“You said he left.”

“He did.”

“When?”

Mara calculated.

“Nine years ago.”

The room became silent.

Exactly when Adrian disappeared.

Lucian looked at her.

“What was his name?”

“Thomas Hayes.”

Darius inhaled sharply.

Lucian turned.

“You know it.”

Darius looked reluctant.

“Thomas Hayes was listed as a driver for Vale Holdings.”

Mara shook her head.

“No. My father drove trucks.”

“He did both.”

“You’re wrong.”

Darius opened something on his tablet.

An employment record.

Thomas Hayes.

Security and transportation.

Vale Holdings.

Mara stared at the photograph.

Her father.

Younger.

Standing beside a company car.

“He never told us.”

Lucian looked at the dates.

Thomas’s final day of employment was the same date Adrian’s car went off the bridge.

Mara sat down.

“What the hell did my father do?”

Nobody answered.

Noah whispered, “Mara.”

She looked at him.

He was holding an old cardboard box.

“What’s that?”

“Dad’s stuff.”

Mara had forgotten it existed.

Their mother had refused to throw away the few things Thomas left behind.

Noah opened it.

Receipts.

Old photographs.

A watch.

A set of keys.

Then Mara found a small notebook.

Most pages were empty.

One wasn't.

A date.

The night Adrian disappeared.

Beneath it:

A.V. KNOWS.

DON’T TRUST S.V.

Mara looked at Lucian.

“S.V.”

“Sebastian Vale.”

Another line followed.

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS, CHECK THE GARAGE.

Mara knew exactly which garage.

Her father had rented one behind their childhood home.

They drove there before dawn.

The building had been abandoned for years.

Mara still remembered the lock combination.

Her mother's birthday.

Inside were rusted tools, boxes, and an old motorcycle.

Lucian searched silently.

Mara found a loose floorboard.

Underneath was a metal case.

Inside were documents.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

And a voice recorder.

Lucian pressed play.

Static.

Then Thomas Hayes’s voice filled the garage.

“If anyone finds this, Adrian was right.”

Mara stopped breathing.

“The money is being moved through the foundation. Adrian has proof. Sebastian knows we're onto him.”

Lucian closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

“I’m getting Adrian and Celia out tonight. If we don't make it—”

Static swallowed the next words.

Then Thomas returned.

“Lucian can't know yet. He'll go after Sebastian, and Sebastian will kill him too.”

Mara covered her mouth.

Her father hadn't abandoned them.

He had disappeared helping Adrian.

Lucian rewound the recording.

A noise came from outside.

A car door.

Then another.

Lucian killed the recorder.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Mara.”

She grabbed a wrench.

“I'm coming.”

The garage door began rising.

Lucian stepped in front of her.

A silhouette appeared.

Tall.

Male.

Mara gripped the wrench.

The man stepped into the light.

He had Mara's eyes.

Her father's face.

And nine years of gray in his hair.

Mara forgot how to breathe.

“Dad?”

Thomas Hayes looked at his daughter.

Then at Lucian.

His voice broke.

“I can explain everything.”

But another man stepped from the darkness behind him.

May you like

Lucian stared at the brother he had buried nine years earlier.

Adrian Vale was alive.
