Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Behind the Black Door

The story broke before midnight.

Every news station displayed Emily’s photograph beside headlines accusing her of laundering money for Charles Mercer. Commentators replayed the restaurant kiss and suggested she had manipulated Vincent to gain protection.

The same people who briefly celebrated her as a hidden heiress now called her greedy, dishonest, and calculating.

Emily sat at Margaret’s hospital bedside while reporters gathered outside.

“This is my fault,” Margaret whispered.

“No.”

“If I had told you the truth earlier—”

“You were trying to keep me alive.”

Margaret looked toward the window. “Secrets always demand interest.”

Richard entered with attorneys. “The documents are sophisticated. Whoever created them had access to internal Vale records and Vincent’s security network.”

“Marco,” Emily said.

Vincent stood near the door. “We do not accuse him without proof.”

“You trust him.”

“With my life.”

“Maybe that is the problem.”

Marco had worked beside Vincent for fifteen years. He handled private accounts, schedules, surveillance, and negotiations. He had also been the first person to investigate Emily.

Vincent summoned him to an underground office beneath one of his clubs.

Marco arrived calmly.

“You think I framed her,” he said.

Vincent placed the documents on the table. “Explain how her identification number entered my system.”

“I do not know.”

“Only you and I had access.”

“Then perhaps your system was compromised.”

Emily watched his face.

“You told Vincent I worked multiple jobs,” she said. “You obtained my mother’s medical records.”

“With legal investigators.”

“You knew everything about me before I knew your name.”

Marco looked at Vincent. “She is turning you against the only person who remained loyal.”

“No,” Emily said. “I am asking why you sound more offended than surprised.”

Marco’s expression hardened.

Vincent noticed.

“Open the black door,” he ordered.

Marco went still.

Emily looked between them. “What black door?”

Vincent explained that every major organization kept emergency archives. His was behind a reinforced black door inside the office. Only Vincent and Marco could enter.

Marco removed a key from his pocket.

Inside the archive were encrypted drives, financial records, and files documenting decades of alliances.

One shelf was empty.

Vincent stared at it.

“The Mercer evidence,” he said.

Marco reached for his weapon.

Vincent moved faster.

He pinned Marco against the wall, but Marco struck an alarm switch. The lights went out.

Gunshots erupted in the corridor.

Emergency lighting flashed red.

Emily dropped behind a cabinet as armed men stormed the archive. Vincent fought through them while Marco escaped through a hidden passage.

By the time security regained control, two guards were wounded and Marco was gone.

On the floor lay a photograph of Antonio DeLuca standing beside Marco’s mother.

A letter on the back revealed the truth.

Marco was Antonio’s illegitimate son.

Vincent’s half brother.

Antonio had secretly supported Marco and promised him a place in the family, but after Antonio’s death, Vincent inherited everything. Marco spent fifteen years pretending loyalty while believing the empire had been stolen from him.

“He does not want money,” Vincent said. “He wants my name destroyed.”

“And he is using me to do it,” Emily replied.

They traced Marco to the Vale Tower, where he had locked himself inside Richard’s former executive offices. He threatened to release documents implicating judges, agents, and hundreds of innocent employees unless Vincent transferred control of his companies.

Emily realized the offshore account was not merely designed to frame her. It contained a tracking code.

“Marco expects us to access it,” she said. “He wants to see where we are.”

Vincent’s technical team reversed the code, using it to enter Marco’s network.

They found live surveillance footage from Margaret’s hospital room.

Marco had another man inside the hospital.

Emily called the nurse, but the line failed.

They raced upstairs.

Margaret’s room was empty.

On the bed lay a phone playing a live video.

Marco stood on the roof of Vale Tower with Margaret beside him.

“Bring me Vincent,” he said into the camera. “Or Emily loses her mother the way I lost mine.”

Vincent prepared to go alone.

Emily blocked the elevator.

“No.”

“He wants me.”

“He framed me because he knows I matter to you. That makes me part of this.”

“I will not risk you.”

“You already taught me what happens when powerful men make decisions for women without asking.”

Vincent closed his eyes briefly.

“Stay behind me.”

They reached the rooftop during a violent storm.

Marco stood near the edge with a gun pressed against Margaret’s side.

“You brought her,” he said.

“She refused to stay,” Vincent answered.

Marco laughed. “Of course. You always wanted what was never meant for you.”

Vincent stepped forward. “You were my brother. You could have told me.”

“And become what? Your grateful employee?”

“You were never just an employee.”

“I lived in the shadows while you inherited our father’s name.”

Vincent removed his weapon and placed it on the wet concrete.

“You want the companies? Take them.”

Marco’s smile disappeared.

Vincent continued. “I will sign everything over. Release Margaret and clear Emily’s name.”

Emily looked at him.

He meant it.

The empire that created his feared reputation no longer mattered more than the people beside him.

Marco sensed it too.

“You think surrender makes you noble?”

“No. I think it makes your revenge meaningless.”

Marco’s hand shook.

Margaret suddenly drove her elbow into his ribs.

Emily lunged forward and pulled her mother away.

Marco fired.

Vincent pushed Emily to the ground.

The bullet struck him high in the chest.

“No!”

Vincent fell.

Security agents burst through the rooftop door and tackled Marco before he fired again.

Emily crawled to Vincent, pressing both hands over the wound.

Blood soaked his shirt.

“Stay with me.”

His eyes struggled to focus.

“I should have asked before the first kiss,” he whispered.

She sobbed. “You can apologize when you wake up.”

“What if I do not?”

“Then I will find you and kill you myself.”

A faint smile touched his lips.

“Terrifying woman.”

Paramedics rushed onto the roof.

Vincent survived emergency surgery, but the bullet had damaged an artery. Doctors warned that the next twenty-four hours would determine whether he recovered.

Emily remained beside him.

Reporters waited outside while federal agents released evidence clearing her name. Marco confessed to fabricating the account and cooperating with Mercer.

Public opinion reversed again, but Emily no longer cared.

At three in the morning, Vincent opened his eyes.

Emily leaned closer.

“You stayed,” he murmured.

“You were shot. It seemed rude to leave.”

His fingers moved weakly around hers.

“I gave the companies to a trust.”

“I know.”

“I may no longer be the most feared man in the city.”

“Good. Your personality needed work.”

He smiled painfully.

Then his expression became serious.

“Emily, I love you.”

She stopped breathing.

“I have loved you badly,” he continued. “Secretly. Protectively. Arrogantly. But I want to learn to love you honestly.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I love you too.”

He closed his eyes with relief.

Outside the room, Margaret smiled.

But the peace lasted only until morning.

Sofia arrived carrying a sealed court petition.

Lily’s adoptive parents had decided to move overseas after receiving threats connected to the case.

They wanted to take Lily permanently.

Vincent had seven days to decide whether to challenge the move and risk tearing his daughter’s life apart—or let her leave just as he had finally found her.
