Chapter 5 - The Account in Emma's Name

Marco raised both hands.

"I'm not here to hurt you."

Luca moved between him and Ava.

"That's far enough."

Marco stopped.

He looked exhausted.

Nothing like the impatient manager Ava knew.

"I need to talk."

Ava stared at him.

"You signed documents declaring me incompetent."

Marco closed his eyes.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Jake paid me."

The simplicity of it hurt.

"How much?"

"Twenty thousand."

Ava laughed once.

"You helped steal my life for twenty thousand dollars?"

"I didn't understand what it was."

"You understood my name was on it."

"Yes."

"You watched me work on an injured ankle."

Marco looked down.

"I know."

"You knew I couldn't afford Emma's medicine."

"I know."

"And you still—"

"I know!"

His voice broke.

Silence followed.

Marco rubbed his face.

"Jake told me it was temporary. He said you were hiding assets during a custody dispute."

"We never had a custody dispute."

"I learned that later."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because by then I was trapped."

Luca spoke.

"Who trapped you?"

Marco looked toward Margaret.

"Her."

Margaret stiffened.

"That's absurd."

Marco pulled out his phone.

"Is it?"

He played a recording.

A woman's voice filled the room.

Margaret's voice.

Keep Ava working at Marino's. We need to know who contacts her.

Ava stared at Margaret.

The older woman didn't deny it.

"Why?"

Margaret sat down.

"Because I was trying to protect you."

Ava nearly laughed.

"Everyone says that right before admitting they lied to me."

Margaret looked older suddenly.

"Your mother asked me to watch you."

"By paying Marco?"

"No. By keeping you visible."

"Visible to whom?"

"To me."

Luca interrupted.

"Who is behind the trust?"

Margaret looked at him.

"I don't know."

"Your name was on my father's recording."

"He wasn't saying I was the architect."

"How do you know?"

"Because he called me the night he recorded it."

Ava leaned closer.

"What did he say?"

"He said, 'The architect is Margaret's brother.'"

Silence.

Margaret's eyes filled.

"Thomas Vale."

Luca went still.

Ava didn't recognize the name.

"Who is he?"

Luca answered.

"My father's former chief financial officer."

"Where is he?"

"Supposedly dead."

Margaret shook her head.

"No."

Ava looked between them.

"What do you mean, no?"

"My brother disappeared sixteen years ago. A body was identified after a boating accident. There was no DNA confirmation."

Marco spoke quietly.

"He's alive."

Everyone turned.

"I've met him."

Margaret stood so quickly the chair scraped backward.

"Where?"

"Three months ago."

"Where?"

"Marino's."

Ava felt sick.

"Why there?"

"Because he owns it."

Silence.

Marco looked at Ava.

"Not officially. Shell companies."

The diner.

Her shifts.

Her desperation.

None of it had been random.

Ava sat.

"Why me?"

"Because he couldn't access the trust without you."

"And Emma?"

Marco swallowed.

"Emma changes the inheritance."

Margaret closed her eyes.

Ava looked at her.

"Explain."

"If anything happens to you before you turn thirty, Emma becomes beneficiary."

Ava's blood ran cold.

Luca's voice became hard.

"Nobody is touching either of them."

Margaret looked at him.

"That's why Elaine created the separate account."

"The million dollars?"

"Emergency protection. Money that could be released immediately if Ava discovered the truth."

Ava stared.

"Can I access it?"

"Yes."

"Now?"

Margaret nodded.

"With the key."

Ava frowned.

"What key?"

"The brass key Jake gave Emma."

Ava pulled it from her pocket.

Margaret examined the number 317.

"Not the locker number."

"But it opened locker 317."

"It was designed to."

Margaret turned the tag over.

Under the light, faint numbers appeared.

A bank routing code.

Luca understood first.

"Safe-deposit box."

Two hours later they stood inside a private bank vault.

Box 317 opened with the same key.

Inside were three things.

A birth certificate.

A property deed.

And a handwritten note from Elaine.

Ava unfolded it.

If you're reading this, someone finally forced the truth into daylight. Trust evidence, not names. Trust actions, not reputations. And remember: the person who appears to have the least power may be the person everyone underestimated.

Beneath the note was a bank authorization.

The emergency account belonged to Emma.

Ava was trustee.

No Jake.

No Marco.

No Margaret.

No Luca.

For the first time, Ava controlled something.

She cried.

Not because of the million dollars.

Because her mother had trusted her.

Luca stood silently nearby.

Ava wiped her face.

"What happens now?"

"You hire your own lawyer."

"Not yours?"

"No."

She studied him.

"Why?"

"Because you need someone whose loyalty belongs only to you."

It was perhaps the first thing he'd done that made her trust him.

Not fully.

But enough.

They left the bank after midnight.

Dante waited beside the car.

He looked worried.

"Luca."

"What?"

"We found Jake."

Ava stopped.

"Where?"

Dante handed her a tablet.

Security footage.

Jake entering Marino's through the back door.

Timestamp:

Eleven minutes ago.

Ava looked up.

"He's there now?"

Dante nodded.

Then the tablet chimed.

Live camera.

Jake appeared in the restaurant's empty dining room.

He stared directly into the security camera.

Then he held up a handwritten sign.

AVA, I DIDN'T TAKE YOUR MONEY.

He lowered it.

Raised another.

Then the feed went black.
